Jeff Green heart surgery set for Jan. 9, will miss entire season

Press release via CelticsBlog:
BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Jeff Green will undergo surgery on Monday January 9, 2012at the Cleveland Clinic and will miss the 2011-12 season.
A team of leading cardiac specialists who consulted with Green and the Celtics indicated that surgery should completely repair Green’s condition and that he can expect to resume his NBA career next season.
During his team physical Friday, December 9th, an aortic aneurysm was detected. As a precautionary measure, Green underwent extensive additional testing, after which doctors recommended surgery.
“While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff’s case,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career.”
At Jeff’s request, neither Jeff nor the Celtics will have any additional comment at this time.
Green’s contract will be voided and the Celtics will have only the veteran’s minimum to fill two open roster spots.
But most importantly, my thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff Green. Heart surgery. Damn.

Considering how flippant JG was in his Tweets and comments regarding this earlier this week, I am thankful the Cs went to Cleveland and explored the depth of this issue as finding this now likely saved his life. Lesson for everyone, when you’re 25 and supposedly “fatigued” as an elite caliber athlete, or even if not, get to the doctor and get checked out. It just might save your life. My best to JG and hopefully this will be a major wake-up call to him about taking the ‘gift’ of health, hoops and being a Celtic a lot more serious in the future. Go Cs…

I don’t think flippant is a good choice of words. As an young person and athlete I am sure his first reaction was to be in a state of denial regarding a serious health issue.

Go back and read his comments that he made several days into this when it was already determined that something was wrong. He was not taking it seriously and being young is no excuse for stupid comments about one’s health. Just my opinion. Go Cs…

I am not as smart as you James, when I was 24 I thought and said a lot of things I wouldn’t say now.

Guys, it’s not what he said today it is what he said several days ago. Read the post from the other day where I commented on this. And I was once 24 and thought I was invincible too, but it just doesn’t work that way and many 24 yr olds and under learn that the hard way. And lastly, it’s just my opinion so sorry you you don’t like it. Go Cs…

I survived an aortic aneurysm repair 5 years ago. Faith and modern medicine is a wonderful thing. My prayers are going out for Jeff Green and his family.

Absolutely, and why I made my comments about JG’s flippant comments several days ago. Let’s be happy this young man’s life was likely saved and he’ll be back next year. Go Cs…
