Ray Allen wants multi-year deal from Boston Celtics

Ray Allen, who is 36 years old although you wouldn’t know it while watching him shoot 137 percent from the three-point arc, said he has a “great chance” to play until he’s 40 and wants to sign a multi-year deal with the Boston Celtics when his contract expires after this season. (Fox Sports Florida)
“My body feels good,” Allen said. “Whenever you’re with a great organization, it makes it easier, and it makes it funner, and it gives me a great chance to play until I’m 40. I don’t know how many guys in the history of this league have done it.” …
Allen will be a free agent next summer. When asked if he wants to re-sign with the Celtics, he offered a quick, “Yeah.” Does he think he can get another multi-year deal from them at 37?
“Yeah,” said Allen, in the second-year of a two-year, $20 million contract. “That’s what I want.”
I have literally zero idea what direction Danny Ainge will take following this year. Will he try to re-sign Garnett and Allen to smaller deals? Start from scratch building around Rajon Rondo with quiet moves designed for the future? Try to make bold sign-and-trades to reload on the fly? Kiss Dwight Howard’s shoes, promise to do all Howard’s laundry for six years and give Howard the “Ray Allen in He Got Game” recruiting experience to try to entice the game’s best center (sorry, Greg Stiemsma) to join the Celtics? Some combination of all that?
I have no idea what the Celtics will look like in 2012-13. But I surely wouldn’t mind Ray Allen making a return, as long as it’s for a fair price.

It’s doubtful that the Celtics will give that to him.

I’m all for giving him a 2-yr deal based on what he does this season, which will likely be more of the same as he has shown so far. I would still bring him off the bench instead of starting him, even this season (try it and see what happens as you can always go back/same for KG – now that would be a solid bench and mess with other teams). I believe RA/KG/PP all have more to give and signing them to extensions would be more attractive to DH or similar caliber players than blowing it up and rebuilding via the draft and free agency (why would a FA come to Boston unless they’re in the playoffs consistently???). Go Cs…

JT, it depends on how much Allen wants. He has to know that the Celtics can only pay him so much. I think the Cs should do everything they can to make sure Kevin and Ray retire as Celtics. But they are going to have to be willing to accept contracts that scale back.
As for Dwight, the person who will bring him here will be Rondo. Our best chance to land Howard will be if Rondo has a magnificent season and establishes himself as possibly the top point guard. But should we take it for granted that we want Howard? I’d say probably we should, because Howard is a great center, and because Rondo-to-Howard could become more legendary than Stockton-to-Malone, but I don’t know that it should be considered a no-brainer. I thought Celtic fans were a little bit beyond the usual fan knee jerk reaction to hype. There are aspects to Howard’s game and character that don’t seem all that appealing. Like a lot of stars who arguably have underachieved on a team success level, he seems to be a blamer. But I’m not sure I see in Howard someone who understands the finer points of the game. He doesn’t seem that active for someone with his gifts. He doesn’t seem all that attentive to the ‘little stuff’. He doesn’t seem to work with his team mates maximally. Basically, he seems to get a lot of mileage out of his physical abilities.
I’m not saying “no” to chasing Howard, the way I said “no” to chasing Paul. Of course, a rebounder/shotblocker/scorer like Howard is very attractive, and it’s easy to imagine that he could be even better, maybe a lot better, with the Cs. But let’s remember that how a guy fits with the team matters still; there might be other good options, maybe even better ones.
When you look at the excitement over Stiemsma, you can take that as a measure of how desperate we are for a center in these parts.

Are you saying other teams would not like having Stiemsma’s shot blocking? How many points against the Celtics has that saved…not to mention transition points the Celtics have got off the blocks.

Pay Ray what he wants. His age doesn’t matter, unlike Pierce, Garnett, ONeal, etc. Ray is a jumpshooter who keeps himself in great shape. So long as he can knock down 3s, he’s worth a lot, and let’s not forget that last season was one of his most productive, if not thee most productive in terms of shooting percentage, proof in the pudding that his age isn’t slowing him down. If they let him go, good luck replacing the best shooter in the game, while some other team will benefit greatly.

Ray is one of the greatest shooters ever. With that being said, take the Wouldya? Challenge at http://www.wickedimproper.com

ray HAS to have plenty of money. smart guy , endorsements , huge contracts, movie star…. money can not be an issue. he says he enjoys playing for the celtics organization then i dont see why he wouldnt come back for less money and another couple years at making a run at a championship. he is not one of the best shooters of all time, he is the BEST shooter of all time. at 36 he can not get his own shot off as good as he once, and he may not be able to mix it up with a drive to the hoop to keep the defense honest but in the celtics offensive system he is perfect piece. he NEVER forces shots and rarely turns it over. there is no signs of him slowing down physically, he is a machine. if kg and ray were to get two year deals at a low price and still be all about the team and do anything and everything thats best for the team…. what free agent wouldnt want to come in and have these guys as teamates.
after this year we could see something interesting that you dont see it alot or ever in pro sports with kg, ray and paul pierce… they already made their money, they are playing for something more than that , for the love of the game, for the love of chasing down the nba championship…
how cool would it be of them to take minimum contracts allowing the celtics to sign one more young stud and play out two more seasons as celtics?

Everyone is forgetting the single most important thing about Ray and his desire to stay in boston. He will he cut a deal as $$ doesn’t matter as much at this point w/the $$ he’s made over his career. Besides having fun playing here, his most important thought process is that his son has type 1 diabetes and living in boston has access to one of the most renowned diabetic facilities (Joslin) in the country. Everything Ray does w/charity et al relates to diabetes and that is clearly his biggest concern, his family. He wouldn’t want to come out and say it to screw himself in negotiations, but he is going nowhere and he knows it. He’d take a $1mil shaq deal to stay here.

Matt makes a great point – the Boston area does offer the best medical care anywhere in the world, and Joslin is top notch.
I personally would love to have Allen back and retire here.

I think they should give him whatever he wants and keep him as long as they can…why is the world so all fire intent upon trashing those who manage to remain healthy and talented far into their future…youth is not everything…and Ray is proof of that for sure

KG is the second highest paid NBA player of all time. Resign him to veterans minimum and he plays off the bench with an expectation of 15 minutes per game to solidify and lead the second unit.
Sign Ray to a second veterans minimum and play him off the bench with an expectation of 15-20 minutes per game… or bring him on when we need a clutch shooter.
Then you have Ray and KG anchoring the second unit with Stiemsma, Pietrus at SF and a point guard (hopefully we can improve on a Bradley or Dooling) and then build around Pierce and Rondo for the three starting jobs. Bass maybe able to step up to starting PF if we can land a powerful center (Howard a dream come true, however a long shot – is he interested?) and a young scorer to play SG who we can really get good offense out of. Imagine landing a Tyreke Evans, Monta Ellis calibre player…
