Being out of shape inexcusable, but it’s Celtics’ best hope

The lockout is supposed to hunt down veterans like Shawn Kemp — those older players who like to dabble in cocaine, alcohol, out-of-wedlock children and Taco Bell’s famed Fourth Meal — rather than championship-tested veterans known for their maniacal workout sessions running in the sands of Malibu Beach. Knowing the lockout would end at some point, understanding that Boston’s Big Three might have one last shot at a ring (if the stars aligned perfectly, perhaps including an injury to one of Miami’s Talented Trio), I figured the Celtics would return to camp in better shape than most teams due to a rare level of professionalism in the Boston locker room.

Instead, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo were the only two starters who returned post-lockout ready to compete at their highest levels (and, luck would have it, they’re both now injured). Jermaine O’Neal claims to have spent the offseason participating in rookie-like workouts, but has often played like a pregnant lady pushing her third trimester. Paul Pierce was set back by a heel injury which occurred on the second day of training camp, but didn’t appear to return in the proper shape anyway. Kevin Garnett is either washed up or spent most of the summer watching cartoons and drinking Dos Equis. And Doc Rivers is saying he still can’t judge this team’s ceiling because none of his players are in shape. (Boston Herald)

“I do [think the Celtics have another run left], but I’d like to find out for sure and get us in shape and get us healthy and get us playing the right way — and then I could give you that answer,” Rivers said before Ray Allen went out with an injured left ankle in yesterday’s 100-94 triumph against the Wizards. “I did before camp started and I saw any of them walk in the door. When they walked in the door, I said, ‘Boy, we’d better get in shape quick.’ I do, but I’d like to have a real answer, and it’s very difficult to give you any type of answer right now.”

“I don’t use it as an excuse, because it really doesn’t matter if you do,” Rivers said. “Our record is what it is, whether it’s lockout or not. We were not ready to start the season — bottom line, we were not. I said that in camp — you could see it — and we’re trying to get there. It’s difficult and we will get there, but it’s no fun losing games while you’re trying to get right. You shouldn’t be trying to get right when the season starts, and we are.

“You can’t use the lockout as an excuse, because other teams didn’t. They came in ready. That’s out fault.”

“I anticipated that it’s going to take a while to get in condition and get right. I didn’t anticipate the record,” he said. “I thought we could still win games, and I’ve learned that you can’t. It’s tough.

“When you’re older and working on conditioning and you’re playing younger and more athletic and in shape (teams), those two things don’t go together. I never knew that, and now I do.”

“You always do,” he said when asked when it will be time to make the cold evaluations, “(but) I don’t think we even are right now at all honestly.

“Obviously Danny (Ainge, team president) is looking — we’re looking — but I think right now we’re just trying to see what our team can be when we’re at full strength as far as health, as far as conditioning. We haven’t had that opportunity yet.”

There’s no excuse for a professional athlete to arrive at training camp needing to work himself into shape. I don’t care if a lockout threatened the season or a Canadian kidnapper kept you locked up in a cell for three months straight; if you’re getting paid millions of dollars to play basketball and your one offseason duty is to maintain cardiovascular functions at a high level, then you should hire a personal trainer and work your ass off (or, if you were taken in by a Canadian kidnapper, just run in place in your dungeon). ESPECIALLY if your career is winding down and one more valiant run –whether it ends with a championship or (considerably more likely) a give-it-your-best-shot-but-at-least-go-home-proud playoff defeat — is all that remains.

That being said, I’m praying the Celtics are just working themselves back into shape. That possibility significantly outweighs the alternative, which is that they just suck.

I don’t think they were being paid by the owners so they had no reason to stay in shape.

Come-on paul how about owning up to the fact that you constantly bitch about ‘loyalty’ and here’s proof that PP wasn’t loyal to the Cs (nor apparently other players as well) and you claim because they weren’t getting paid they had “no reason to stay in shape”??? That’s about the biggest load of crap you’ve ever offered up except for the ‘trade’ bs and well just about everything said about DA. How about the loyalty the players should show the owners who made them multi-millionaires or better yet to their profession, as an elite group lucky enough to play and enjoy all the benefits of being in the NBA? It is absolutely inexcusable as Jay so forcefully states that any Celtics player would come in, with even extra time due to the lockout, out of shape. Talk about peeing on the hand that feeds you. When are you ever going to call anyone out other than DA and Doc or Jay, me and those that support DA? Where’s your loyalty to Celtics’ tradition and working hard and doing what is expected of you or better yet going above and beyond that criteria??? Pathetic loyalty by players ergo I say they are all open to trading except RR, RA and KG. Rookies are OK as are Bradley, Pietrus, Bass, and our centers. So I guess that lease SP and of course…PP Mr. Out-of-Shape himself. Go Cs…

I never wanted to trade him. I’ve been dead set against trading him.

If he keeps playing selfish ball, shooting fall-away jumpers and not following his shot, camping outside the 3-line and just watching instead of participating (like rebounding or making the effort to) then hell yes I say trade him. Do yourself a favor and when watching the games concentrate only on PP and watch how much he is not doing anything when he’s not hogging the ball. Maybe you’ll have a different opinion. Hopefully, he keeps playing like the last couple of games but I still see areas where he can improve based on his being an All-star and ‘forever’ Celtic. Go Cs…

Pal, I think you and Jay have some damn nerve expecting the players to basically play for nothing, by keeping in shape when the owners were locking them out.

I think they should have done it for their own reasons, but to expect it is insane. Do you work for free, pal? Right, they should have been waiting breathlessly like puppets on the owners strings? That’s how people who think workers should ‘know their place’ think.

Are you and Jay that sort? Ya think rich folks are better, and other folks should know their place and damn well snap to when the rich folks snap their fingers?

I wish they would have kept in shape. But I sure as hell don’t blame them for not.

And by the way, pal, as you damn well know, I’ve often praised Danny. And I’ve have long ago forgiven and forgotten The Trade if Danny himself had ever admitted to fault. Instead he has been on a rabid blame tear ever since.

Let’s see, PP’s current contract with the Cs is paying him $15MM this year, $16MM next and was for roughly $90MM plus (6 yrs), not to mention the contracts before this one, and you think it’s OK to not show up in shape because “he wasn’t getting paid”? And you constantly talk about Celtics “pride, tradition, and loyalty”??? How is it that PP is “playing for nothing”??? He has $32MM coming to him this year and next but because the owners froze his pay temporarily that gives him the right to not work out? Does the pride switch go off when the dollar flow stops paul??? You are so fucking unbelievable at times and this post is actually worse than your rantings about DA or the ‘trade’. PP plays for the Cs but it’s the fans that pay his salary not the owners because if the fans did not show up there would be no paycheck for PP or any other player. Where’s PP’s “loyalty” to the fans??? How many games of the 9 lost are due to PP being out of shape, whereas if he was playing like he is now we would have won? Those make any difference in the playoff position maybe??? Or in the current trade talk of the Big 3? This is by far the lamest rationalization I’ve ever heard. In other words (my interpretation of your comments, paul) nobody should ever do anything unless they are being paid for it. Now that would be a really fucked up world if we all lived by that standard. All I can say is if I was lucky enough to get paid for playing hoops, even at my local Y, I would always be in shape or get in proper shape prior to any season, tournament or league because at least I would show pride and loyalty to my teammates but more so to myself and who I am as a human being. Go Cs…

I would have done the same thing in the players spot. I hate the idea that they didn’t take care of their bodies. Are we surprised? Pierce, and KG wanted to fight the owners until the end. KG, and Pierce not in shape wasn’t about the Celtics, or the fans. It was about the owners. KG I believe came into shape, but he’s KG, and he’s on a different energy level. Pierce came into camp out of shape in 2009-10. So it’s not the first time. Again I hate the fact that they didn’t come in top shape, but when the checks stop coming why work for free. Agreed Paul
