Raptors 86, Celtics 74: Make it two straight hideous defeats

The Boston Celtics took more than two minutes to score, and when they did, their first two points were the result of a bogus foul call. An off-balance Kevin Garnett jump shot bounded off the backboard and almost smacked Mickey Mouse, chilling on his couch down in Florida, more than 1,000 miles away, straight between the eyes, but Garnett was sent to the foul line and made both free throws. At least the Celtics were on the board.

It would take another two minutes before Ray Allen made Boston’s first field goal, a welcome sight to any Boston fan still watching the hideous affair. By the time four minutes remained in the first quarter, James Johnson was outscoring Boston by himself, 8-7. By that time, Johnson had improbably stripped Rajon Rondo and garnered a wide open layup for teammate Jose Calderon, Ray Allen had fallen flat on his face trying to sprint around a screen, leading to another wide open Calderon layup, and the Raptors had scored more points via dunks and layups than the Celtics had scored total.

A minute after Johnson slammed home a fast break dunk to give himself an 8-7 lead against the entire Boston roster, Doc Rivers called two timeouts within a span of eight seconds. After the second one — and I’m guessing what he said here; all I could make out was a couple f-bombs — he threatened to kill all his players’ children and stomp on their testicles. It was the maddest anyone has ever seen Rivers, and his players deserved every cuss word he shouted their way.

Two minutes after Rivers’ outburst, he inserted Avery Bradly into the lineup. Bradley was not even supposed to play due to a sore shoulder, and he scored just three points in the first half, notching zero assists compared to two turnovers. Still, his heart ticked like it should, and his pressure defense briefly righted the upside-down world and put Boston back into control. The Celtics were soon down just six points, and would trail by seven, 41-34, at halftime.

Boston’s halftime replenishment of fluids might have included a dash of Ativan, for the Celtics returned from the locker room with glossed over eyes and spittles of drool dripping from their mouths. Offensive possessions mostly consisted of nothing more than a couple passes and a desperation shot to beat the shot clock buzzer, and defensive possessions were an evolved form of hide-and-go-seek during which the Celtics tried their best not to reveal their location to the Raptors. Often, a Raptors offensive rebound extended the pain and suffering beyond the normal 24-second limit.

It’s tough to tell whether Rajon Rondo was dizzy, drunk, ill or simply asleep, but his stat line with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter read “three points, two assists, five turnovers, 1-5 shooting, -20 plus-minus,” and eyes told observers it was a lot worse. The Raptors led 61-45 at that point, and Rondo’s team seemed to follow his comatose lead. In my notes, I wrote, “It’s well past time for Avery Bradley.” This is what it had come to, hoping the two-time All-Star would be subbed out for a career 39.4 percent shooter.

At some point during the third quarter, Kevin Garnett responded to a Toronto heckler by calling him “fat boy.” Boston then switched to a 2-3 zone, normally Rivers’ desperation ploy when his Celtics cannot quell another team’s momentum, but perhaps a punishment for their absent effort tonight. The Celtics entered the fourth quarter trailing 63-51. It felt worse. Bradley remained stapled to the bench. I imagine his shoulder must have acted up. There was no other reason for him to sit. He was the only Celtic whose body and mind both arrived in Toronto. I pondered whether to pour bleach into my eyeballs or spray paint my retinas.

Rondo finally showed vital signs in the fourth quarter. First he dished an assist to Marquis Daniels, then he earned a technical foul. The latter was the most vibrant he’d been all night. It was almost nice to see a little emotion. I switched the channel during a commercial. Jeremy Lin, with a band-aid flying off his chin, was really hurting the Los Angeles Lakers. I smiled. I think it was the first time all night.

The Celtics cut the lead to nine with just more than six minutes remaining. I tried not to get my hopes up. Linas Kleiza answered with a wide open three five seconds later. The Celtics cut it to eight points three minutes after that. Kleiza drilled another triple. This was not Boston’s night.

Boston pounded Toronto 100-64 during their last meeting. Either back-to-backs are lethal, Toronto’s home court advantage is the world’s greatest or Jermaine O’Neal’s young legs were missed.

Rondo knows he is on his way out of town and he’s begun to mentally accept it. I hope Ainge makes the move sooner rather than later. Rondo and the Celtics need to part ways as soon as possible. I still think Rondo is a great player. I guess we’ll see if a different environment makes a difference.

You know, unless this team gets together and figures out why they can’t work things out. But there’s no chance of that. It’s time to move on. Let the Bradley era begin.

Rondo played like a guy who no longer feels a part of this team, who feels he is already on his way out of town. That’s because he is.

RR isn’t going anywhere. He’s not the problem. It’s a team that’s not being led by example by it’s captain and definitely by it’s coach terrible coaching and use of players. Go Cs…

    Plea to Danny…

    1. Fire Doc…immediately.
    2. Hire a former Celtic to coach this team that understands what Celtic pride, showing up every night, and preparation means.

To all who claim PP is a superstar and “close to Bird”…1 rebound and a total lack of leadership showed tonight why he is not as you claim.

So, before I f’in go off with my rant here are some questions to ponder…

    1. AB plays tonight but sits vs the Lakers. What changed? A miraculous cure in 24 hrs?
    2. How is it that KG shoots 6-9 and is rebounding well (except offensively – 0) and only gets 29 mins? He only had 2 PFs. So, why Doc???
    3. How is it that the C starters can only muster 4 offensive rebs in a whole game?
    4. Why does this team continue to think that by just showing up they’ll win?
    5. Why does this team continually play down to sub .500 teams?

That said, I am particularly peeved by tonight’s total lack of effort. Minus 8 on the boards, ergo -10 on shots and by giving up 13 offensive rebs means the Cs basically handed free opportunities to the Raptors. RR had a very bad game, but I put this loss squarely on Doc. He decided to go to his son’s game on Wednesday instead of preparing the team for a game they should have won. That loss carried over to tonight’s pathetic showing and again it’s Doc’s responsibility to get the team prepared. Then he decides to use AB and JJ tonight in a game with far less importance than last night’s??? Is it any wonder why I hate Doc’s coaching and continue to say he is a mediocre coach, at best? Were they looking to Sunday’s game? If so, then maybe they’ll practice tomorrow unless of course Doc decides to attend the Duke game. All the good work in the last couple of weeks has been peed on with this LAME effort tonight. Go Cs…will the ‘Captain’ show up Sunday leading his team or will it be more of the same???

Ubuntu is, was, and will forever be highly overrated. It has nothing to do with showing up and giving 100% effort. Everyone needs to show up as an individual and give 100% and then sacrifice to the team. Showing up comes first…always. Go Cs…

Also, you can rant about Pierce all you want, but Rondo was our best player. I say was because he’s clearly on his way out of town now, and the sooner the better for everyone’s sake. Doc never tried to find a way to expand Rondo’s role on the team as he entered his prime. I think the problem is still basically that. Look at the play where Doc is screaming at the Celtics. Rondo has the ball at the circle, and he clearly has plenty of room to attack the basket past Calderone, or to go for a pullup J, but instead he meanders to the other side, where maybe there is some kind of set up play for Ray, who knows, but the point is that clearly Rajon doesn’t have any green light to attack the basket. Now this is crazy. How can Rondo play that way? We hogtie our best player and wonder why we struggle? Why is Rondo consistently fourth or fifth in shot attempts? Doc himself said he wanted ten fts a game from Rondo, but he never stuck with this.

I say it again: Doc has made virtually no effort to incorporate Rondo’s growing abilities. As a result, Rondo desperately needs to go to another team, and this team desperately needs him gone. Both sides need a change

Another way to put it might be this: does any Celtics fan really think Jeremy Lin is a better player than Rajon Rondo? Come on. We aren’t using our point guard right. Are we going to be the last team in the league to get it that your point guard has to attack the basket on a regular basis to open things up for the offense? For God’s sake, we have one of the best pgs in the league at attacking the basket, and passing it out or dishing off too, and if we have him do it once a quarter it’s amazing. Why don’t we START games with Rondo attacking the basket, and keep doing it? If we combined that with our nice pattern offense, it would be great, but noooooooooooo, can’t have that. Can’t mess up Doc’s precious little patterns of Xs and Os with any improvisation. Oh God no.

So no matter how much Rondo grows as a player, he has to stay in his tiny little box.

At this point, he needs to be on another team and Bradley needs to be our starter, with PP playing point forward.

RR may be the best player and is certainly the straw that stirs the drink, but he is not the ‘captain’ and the one HOF that has been a Celtic for 14 years. Red has to be spinning out of control in his grave about the lack of leadership PP is showing. Who the f**k would follow him into battle??? Instead of shipping RR out why not can Doc and get a coach in that understands what you are saying? Keeping Doc is a 5-yr plan of disaster working right before our eyes. I believe the team is not listening to him and he certainly has no power over the team. Doc Sucks, not Rondo. Go Cs…

James, I agree with most of your decree above. Paul, I do believe that Lin is already a better point guard than Rondo ever will be. Yes, I know he’s only played in a few games, but Lin can hit a jump shot, something Rondo will never do, and Lin will likely always appreciate his role to play in the NBA. Last year, I got very tired of Rondo’s moodiness and not showing up to play on so many games. We gave him a break, due to the trade of his friend Perk, and that maybe there were personal problems in his life, etc, etc. this year, he still doesn’t have a jump shot, proven by the Lakers sagging off of him, the best way to take the C’s out of their offense. Rondo is getting worse instead of better, and after five or six years in the league, he should be peeking as player and he’s simply not.

PS on Rondo—-let’s not forget the C’s starting winning when Rondo went out of the lineup and Bradley supercharged the team with his energy and desire.

here in L.A. there is a trade rumor on the Lakers radio station: Rondo for Gasol. I hope they pull the trigger on this one. We’d get a big man and never have to see Rondo pouting anymore.

No please. I would not trade Pierce for Bynum. Bynum is another player with a history of injuries. If the Celtics have any hope for the future, depending on where his head is at, I would not trade Rondo. As much as I love the Big 3 plus J O Neal, I would put everyone of them up for trade and start concentrating on youth. That is the way forward for this team. Doc is an idiot who also should be replaced. He’s had too many chances in my book. He has the same formula with this team which is why they are losing games. I believe that Rondo, Bradley, Pietrus, Johnson and Steimsma as a five looks great. Why don’t we see this line up more often? If there is one reason to trade Rondo is that I believe he is still bitter toward the Celtics management over the Perkins trade. If he can curtail that kind of attitude, I would say DEFINITELY keep him otherwise, he could be a detriment to the team’s progress. I would trade Rondo for no more than a player of equal age or younger and an ALLSTAR to boot. Someone like Kevin Love would be great for the C’s.

rondo for gasol no way… if this goes down im not a celtic anymore that’s for sure… i rather trade all big three than rondo… I see you guys hit on rondo alot… come on guys even in 08 rondo was a key to the championship.. it’s really rare rondo play so bad as he did in toronto compare to other players on the team like for example PP or ray ray… i just don’t get it if ainge wants to trade rondo… where is the young team talk?? we don’t need gasol from the fakers.. he is 32 and softer than my grandma.. matter fact we don’t need to trade or sign or anything before next season.. just hang in c’s we’ll get there…

How about none are traded and instead the line-up is tweaked to bring RA in off the bench as the Sixth man giving EM the starting SG spot? I mean if we’re going to lose games and eek into the playoffs not caring about seeding then mix it up and let’s prepare the rookies and younger players to be ready so when needed they will be ready. I like this team and it’s bench is much better but Doc’s rotations SUCK and always have pretty much. The season is for getting ready for the title run and this group can win it all but if I was coach I’d love to have EM, JJ, GS and AB all ready to produce as injuries can happen but better yet, if they don’t you can use these players to give rest and exploit other teams not so deep (Miami, Bulls, OKC and Dallas). Go Cs…

James, agreed! Doc doesn’t know how to rotate players. And yesterday, he should have cleared the bench immediately when the starters fell down early. He left them in there to get devoured. Why??????
