Does JaJuan Johnson deserve rotation minutes?

payday loans

I am really busy today (work and other engagements, namely my little brother’s final home high school hoops game of the year), but JaJuan Johnson needs discussing.

Clearly, his 33 minutes yesterday were exciting and encouraging. He did a lot of great things — his run-out for an alley-oop, when he beat everyone down the court by a country mile; the following defensive play, when he reached out to poke away an entry pass and Chris Wilcox ended up finishing another alley-oop; the few jumpers he drilled; and even a number of nearly-missed offensive rebound opportunities during which Johnson’s athleticism and motor were clearly evident. But Johnson also made some rookie mistakes. Think about when Carlos Boozer drop-stepped and lowered his shoulder, and Johnson couldn’t even come close to standing his ground.  Think about a few times when Johnson missed defensive rotations, or the couple occasions when he visibly got in the way of his own teammate’s offensive move.

“He’s got to keep doing it,” Doc Rivers told CSNNE. “One game doesn’t make a star. One season doesn’t make a star. So you’ve just got to keep doing it and he’s got to do it consistently.  He will, like I keep saying. He’s a great kid and he wants to do it. He’s young and he’s still learning focus and all that. But he’s a good player.”

Johnson’s a good player whose production (he’s scored at least 10 points in all three games he’s played at least 10 minutes) has sparked a debate: Does he deserve to join Doc Rivers’ rotation consistently?

Johnson is currently stuck as the fifth big in a league that generally features only four bigs in every rotation. Wilcox has started to play well, giving Boston four big men who Rivers trusts more than any other: Brandon Bass, Kevin Garnett and Jermaine O’Neal being the three besides Wilcox. Johnson is knocking on the door. His problems are easily evident — he struggles physically against stronger opponents and does not yet have a firm grasp on everything the Celtics are trying to do. But it’s also clear that he can score at the NBA level, and his athleticism could potentially give the slow-paced Celtics another dimension.

That’s the biggest argument for giving Johnson and Wilcox more minutes: the duo possesses fast feet and impressive vertical leaps which make them candidates to run the floor alongside Rajon Rondo. For years, Rondo — designed to operate in the land of the open floor — has been miscast as a slow-it-down point guard, mostly because the other Celtics personnel dictates that the team must grind out games rather than open the throttle. This year especially, Rondo can normally be seen either slowing the pace to let his teammates catch up or running the floor by himself in his version of The One-Man Fast Break.

Wilcox and Johnson, not to mention Mickael Pietrus and Avery Bradley, provide athletic options that could unleash Open-Floor Rondo in ways he hasn’t been accustomed to, yet in ways he was built to operate. Think about the two successive alley-oops Rondo threw yesterday — give Rondo a little space and he becomes an artist. Flank him with weapons and he becomes a magician.

Are Johnson and Wilcox’s athletic traits and impressive energy enough to supplant Jermaine O’Neal in the rotation? The minutes allotted to Bass and Garnett aren’t being spread anywhere else when those two are healthy, so Johnson and Wilcox are effectively fighting for O’Neal’s minutes. The battle essentially becomes this: does O’Neal’s defensive presence and veteran sense of calm win out, or can Wilcox and Johnson steal playing time with their exuberance and athleticism — and, in Johnson’s case, a natural scoring sense?

Rivers normally sides with veterans in situations like this. But Johnson is making a case to join the rotation, and if he does, Rondo might have a willing and capable front court running partner.

P.S. — Johnson still doesn’t know all the plays. This matters, but all my prior statements stand. (CSNNE)

“I definitely don’t have [the playbook] down like I need to, so I try to [study] it quite a bit. Did a little bit today. I need to keep at it to know it like the back of my hand,” he said. “It’s a job so at the end of the day, you’ve got to do whatever you’ve got to do to be fully prepared to go out there. That’s what I have to continue to work on.”

With each game, Johnson feels more comfortable on the court. He is finding the balance between playing with his instincts and playing within the Celtics system.

“I would say it’s about half and half,” he said. “It’s a lot of mental stuff — defensive assignments, knowing all the offensive plays — but at the same time you have to let your instincts take control and just be ready to play. In a split second you’ve got to make a play on the ball and or block a shot.”

Of course and absolutely. Open-court RR needs this as the team is more efficient running than in the molasses half-court offense (which dominates the playoffs). But the real question is will Doc give the kid the time to prove he can contribute consistently. Oh, and one championship doesn’t make a coach, Doc. Go Cs…

Oh c’mon James I know he’s not your favorite coach but just winning one championship is nearly impossible. He wasn’t trying to slight JJ in any way.

Sometime after 5 yrs as a Celtic I gave PP a pass even though he grew up in Inglewood where the Forum is and which used to be the Lakers, his favorite team, old home in LA. Maybe it’s why I am so critical of him at times. I try not and think about him going to KU. I am a Syracuse fan as my dad was and have followed them, like the Cs, my whole life. Go Orange, Go Cs…

Yeah I think that fact about PP lingers in every C’s mind. He’s okay in my book though, he hates Metta World Peace like I do. But yeah syracuse is looking good this year, but I gotta pull for my Tar Heels being from NC. The rivalry is absolutely insane around here.

What I hate is when the System is more important than the players. I always hate that.

Yes but let us not forget that we need Rondo’s aggression in the half court game too. This is a both and situation.

Until JO’s reentry by default JJ gets valuable on the job training. That could translate into the same kind of blessing for JJ as it was for Bradley when RR went down.

Now he may not be part of a set rotation when Bass and JO are healthy, but game experience could pay off in March when they play 5 back-to-backs and 8 straight road games over 12 days.

Naturally his athleticism comports with Rondo’s skill set, but so does Cox. Defensively we’re much stronger with JO starting (+11 for the starting unit per 161 minutes), and Cox is prone to foul trouble, but he brings energy they’ve lacked in the first quarter. So it may be useful to start Cox to optimize Rondo’s transition skills. I would like see this line up when JO returns …

    Starters … RR/Ray/PP/KG/Cox
    Second Unit … Dooling/Bradley/Pietrus/JJ/JO

If Dooling can relocate his shot they’re be enough spacing on the perimeter for Piertrus and JJ, and with JO anchoring the paint they’re pretty solid defensively. When Bass returns you can spot up minutes for JJ depending on game situations and foul trouble. Bottom line here is the entire team must gang rebound because JO, and Garnett to a degree, appears to have lost the ability to box out. At the very least JJ is a nice option to have in reserve given JO’s shaky health situation.

We lack length and power up front, but we can make up for it with energy. That means playing more Bigs for shorter shifts.

Well I think it’s pretty evident he deserves more minutes on the floor. I still think the halfcourt is gonna be our main thing come spring time, but I think it would be beneficial for every body if we push the tempo with Cox, JJ,MP, AB, and even EM and MD on the floor. That gives us a two dimensional team that can be devastating for opposition because they’ll have a tough time matching up.

Every Celtics Championship prior to 2008 was a fast break team, I believe. Ideally a team should combine a strong half court game with a strong transition game. I think we can do that.

Damn straight JaJuan deserves minutes. Hopefully this franchise will realize that the youth are the way forward. This team can’t expect RR, PP, RA and KG to generate the offense all the time and I think that Doc is too reliant on that lineup. I think that every person on this team has a role and as long as they play that, we gon be alright. Every player on this team should be getting minutes, within reason and if they don’t perform, sub and put the next guy in. JaJuan has proved his worth in my opinion and so has Bradley, Moore, Stiemsma and even Pavlovic is of value to this team in small bursts. I am quite happy with every player on this teams ability and if they can put it together come playoffs, we will be a force to be reckoned with. No reason why we can’t come from all angles. The new look C’s is the best team since the 2008 season.

This is a deep team. Danny outdid himself in that regard. Yes, James, I can indeed say nice things about Ainge. We can be a great energy team.

I think the morale has always been positive and we all certainly want the team to play hard all the time as it leads to wins, but if another Toronto type game happens, which this team has shown happens more than it ever should, then we’ll all be negative/frustrated again. Personally, I just want Doc to use the bench as much as possible and focus everyone on rebounding better. If those two things can be ingrained then this can be another title run, as their talent is better than 2008. Go Cs…

If the core veterans were capable of making a deep run (as they were the last few years) you could argue for bringing Johnson along slowly. The Celts no longer have that luxury. There’s really no downside to increasing his minutes. The worse that could happen is that you’d win one less playoff game before getting bounced in the 1st round. The best that could happen — you’d go more than one round, maybe more than two. This shouldn’t even be a question.

We have a shot at coming out of the east my friend. You know why? Bench scoring. We currently have the best bench in the east. Better than the Media-Driven favorites, chicago and miami
