Pistons 98, Celtics 88: Oh, boy. That wasn’t good. At least Boston still has Rondo, Wilcox.

At some point that turned from this:

(.gif from @dombili)

to this:

I guess it’s tough to win games when Kevin Garnett sits out and Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combine to shoot 1 for 3,958 (estimated figure).

Chris Wilcox, thumbs up. Big Three, thumbs down (Garnett didn’t play, I know). Rajon Rondo, you were everything I hope and dream for during the first three quarters (and still good in the fourth).

Overall, tonight’s game kinda reminded me of the lego castle I tried to put together 20 years ago. I was *thisclose* to completing the entire thing. It wasn’t going to be the prettiest Lego castle ever, but it would have worked. And then my dog came bounding into the room, crashed into the castle, and left four-year old Jay with tears streaming down his face and 35 bazillion useless Legos spread across the floor.

Wasting Rondo’s second consecutive career high is not what I wanted to come from tonight. Losing to the Detroit Pistons before meeting Chicago tomorrow is not ideal. And now I’m faced with having my first nightmares of Ben Gordon since 2009.

More to come later. Not Boston’s best effort, or anywhere close.

Nice. It’s all Rondo’s fault. Only, when Rondo was out tonight, Detroit owned us, and when Rondo was in, we outplayed them.

PP did not show up as evidenced by his 1 reb in 37 mins of play. I’m 58 and guarantee I could get 2 rebs and in a lot less time. Classic Cs playing down to a terrible sub .500 team and losing. Right now I HATE PP and ergo why I earlier called for his trade. He consistently does not show up in the ‘effort’ stats and tonight’s loss falls squarely on him and the team not hitting the boards. You can’t f***king coast to wins boys!!! Go Cs…

Yeahh I’m usually supportive of the C’s even when they lose, but dude we’re talking about the Pistons…Thank God Jeremy Lin is taking the NBA by storm, maybe nobody will notice this…
And as far as PP goes, yeah he had a bad game. I think Rondo needs to figure out how to tone down his offensive onslaughts so that PP and RA can get their games going. He only had 6 assists today. That’s not the Rondo we need. We need Floor General Rondo. Not Derrick Rose Imitation Rondo. I like the fact that he scores more this year, but when he scores like that, alot of the time it’s to the detriment of our team. No KG tonight, so obviously our D suffered in the “energy” category…but hey guys! Look on the bright side. Chris Wilcox is turning out to be another free agent steal by Ainge. And Rondo CAN shoot and ISN’T afraid of driving and absorbing contact. Look for a very fiesty Celtic team tomorrow night. Let the Celtic bashing begin, but let’s not forget that there’s a whole lot more basketball left this year.
NO TRADES!! This team is all about chemistry. Chemistry will be destroyed if our Captain is gone. We should try to alternate between running our offense through Rondo early, then Pierce later in the game.

But they need to play hard in all the games. I don’t want PP traded but unless he gets it together and does the little things when his shots are off then I am going to hate on him. Doc’s a problem too as AB only got 9 mins and KD got 15 but missed 3 FTs…what the f**K??? And why can’t MP get more mins and shot nothing but 3s. Come-on aarrgghhh…Go Cs…find the light switch as you missed it tonight.

I love RR but not 27 shots worth to RA’s 5. Ever, no mater how ‘on’ he may be. RR needs 10+ assists and when he doesn’t distribute the ball then the team suffers. Didn’t watch the game so maybe he was and nobody was hitting (certainly not PP and his 3-11). Just so frustrating rooting for this team. Injuries should not have mattered and JO with only 2 rebs in 22 mins is another pathetic effort. Missing FTs and not rebounding are correctable things but you have to work at it. Sadly, this team disappoints way too much. Go Cs…

They definitely leave you scratching your head alot. But like you said I mean, nobody hitting their shots is not something you should expect from this team. This was a very bad night collectively, with a few standout performances. That is most certainly NOT the Celtic way of playing. JO in my opinion should not be starting, as evidenced by CW’s performance, which seemingly gets better every game. I can’t wait for the game tomorrow. Don’t lose faith!!

I mean I can accept that it’s growing pains as far as the new players gelling with each other with minimal practice time, but we can’t use that excuse forever guys. I’m still very confident in this team nonetheless.

This team continues to be a work in progress. It’s been that all season. We should have expected to lose tonight, with our top two Bigs out. But then again, we should have won it.

But I couldn’t disagree more with the complaints about Rondo’s scoring. Dammit, why can’t some of you fans get it through your heads that RONDO IS A SCORER? Dammit, we would have won this game if Rondo hadn’t deferred to Paul in the middle of the 4th quarter, before he realized that Paul was getting nothing done and started attacking the basket himself again. IF HE HAD SCORED 40 TONIGHT, WE WOULD HAVE WON, and you know he could have.

Yet we have the spectacle of Doc after the game complaining that (Rondo) didn’t get the ‘scorers’ involved early, as if he was not as scorer!! And in fact, Rondo DID try to get Allen involved early, and he was hitting nothing. We lost control of the game early and it was Rondo who brought it back. Everytime he didn’t assert himself, we lost ground.

I do agree with the statement that 6 assists is not enough from Rondo. We need ten assists from him. As a TEAM, we still need to find the synergy where the scoring has a flow to it. This either/or thing, where if Paul scores, Rondo shuts down, and if Rondo scores, Paul shuts down, is so stupid. I’m sorry, but Paul Pierce obviously has a huge, nasty attitude about this whole situation, and we need to stop just blaming Rondo for it.

Look, they both can score but when RA only gets 5 shots then someone is hogging the ball. I don’t want RR taking 27 shots… EVER. That’s ridiculous and detrimental to the offensive flow. There’s no way we should ever lose a game to a sub .500 team unless they shoot lights out, which can happen. And everyone can rebound as that’s a team effort stat, which they dropped the ball totally on again tonight. Go Cs…

You really make me sick, pal. If Paul had scored 35 tonight on better than 50% shooting, on a night when nearly everyone else was shooting like crap, I doubt very much if you or anyone else would have been giving him a hard time about it, especially if he combined that with 6 assists, five boards and four steals and playing like crazy down the stretch. YOU JUST DON’T GET IT AND YOU REFUSE TO GET IT THAT HE ISN’T THE KID BROTHER ANYMORE. He is the best player on this team.

He should have scored 40 tonight on 30 shots or more. Then we damn well would have won. Instead he tried to defer to Paul in the forth and Paul continued to play like crap.

Now buddy, if you want to discuss the synergy of the team with me, the fact that 16 assists for the night just will not cut it for these Celtics, I agree. For one thing, any time Rondo scores more than 20 points, he should definitely get more than ten assists, because that means he should be drawing the defense.

So we can talk about that. But if you just refuse to acknowledge that this kid really is that damned good a player then, really, to heck with you.

But dude Rondo is a beast, no one is denying that. But to your point about PP getting 35 and 6…um, the difference is that Rondo IS A POINT GUARD. Of course he’s gonna be held accountable when he takes that many shots. Of course he’s gonna get criticized when he’s heralded as the best pure point guard in the league but only gets 6 assists. I know it seems awkward to focus on him, and I didn’t see the game, only read the play by play, but from what I can see he essentially took over the game with little help. Our offensive flow just wasn’t what it needs to be tonight. Chill out bro it’s only one game.

paul…how the hell are you reading what you think I’m saying into what I actually write??? I love RR, he’s the best PG in the league but jacking 27 shots is not what made him the best PG in the league. And yes I would praise PP if he scored that because that is his role and his historical average is closer to that than RR’s ever will be. The PG’s role is to DISH and facilitate the ball and run the offense. Jacking 27 of the 77 shots taken is why we only had 16 assists and he only had 6. I love RR but not your interpretation of my comments. Stop reading between the lines as I live in a black and white world and do not mince my words. We do. And I agree with the whole either/or thing. We need to find that balance between our two top offensive guys. When we do, we’ll be fine. Right now it just seems like it’s Rondo trying to shoulder the team which would be fine if we didn’t have the C’s 2nd all time leading scorer. Sorry. I mean on nights like tonight where NO ONE is hitting, by all means Rondo, have at it. But like tomorrow for example, I have no doubt that PP, RA, etc are gonna bring their A game, therefore alleviating that scoring load off of Rondo. And yes I mean earlier this season he was averaging like 14 assists a game! But still very much an unfinished product this team is. Let’s just keep it in perspective.

I totally agree, if what you are saying is that we need synergy. But if you determined to insist that we can never ever ever ever ever recognize that Rondo is not only an amazing scorer, but our team’s best scorer, then I just don’t know what to say. You people are willfully blind, and that’s just the end of it, isn’t it?

If Doc insists on stuffing Rondo back in his hole, then it will be a total disaster. What he needs to do is get EVERYONE together working on synergy, and it should be fine if Rondo ends up being our leading scorer. But we do want him assisting too, and we want Pierce assisting, and we want close to 30 assists, definitely not 16.

But Rondo is a scorer. He really is. Wake up.

Dude you keep saying synergy. When Rondo went down, WE WON GAMES ON SYNERGY ALONE. We didn’t need a 30 point scorer, and we had two VERY VERY impressive wins against Orlando, and a convincing win a against Indiana. Don’t talk to me about synergy, as if Rondo taking over the game like he did helps it in any way. You wanna talk about synergy? Then Rondo needs to get at LEAST 12 assists a night. He is a scorer and he’s worked on his jumpshot ALOT. I’m actually very excited that he has. But Paul Pierce has MADE HIS CAREER on scoring. Basically what I’m saying is that 30 and 6 isn’t gonna get it done. 25 and 10? That, I can live with.

This situation is so insane at this point that Rondo will be better off when he is far, far, far away from it. Half the fans seem to be calling for Lin after tonight’s game.

AND YOU WONDER WHY RONDO IS FRUSTRATED AND ALIENATED?

Look at no point did I or any other fans on this site say that we don’t like Rondo, it’s just that on a night like this there is a lot of blame to go around to everybody, which includes Rondo. I’ll admit our so called fans have been very hard on Rondo this season, but I mean he has to know that it’s just frustration. I mean he’s a man, I’m sure he can take flak from some fans on the internet. It’s not Rondo’s fault we lost the game. In no way am I insinuating that. It’s the Celtics’ fault we lost tonight. Rondo is the scapegoat, but what is even worse than that is that you people just REFUSE to let him out of his tiny little hole, and you suck up constantly to Pierce. I don’t give a DAMN that Pierce is our second all time leading scorer. He isn’t necessarily our best scorer now. Maybe he is. But maybe Rondo is. I think Rondo obviously is. But the assumption that Rondo must defer to Allen and Pierce must stop.

RR is not the best scorer on the team. PP is and I am on him all the time, like tonight when he’s 3-11 and then compounds that by getting 1 reb all night. Flat out PP did not show up to play tonight and that’s got nothing to do with RR. RR’s job is to get the ball to PP/KG/RA and JO or whoever is in when he is the ‘general’ on the floor. He is not a good scorer but a GREAT scorer but we don’t need him to score 30 to win games. If PP scores 30 then that means RR has at least 10+ assists. Assists drive this team and RR is that guy. As Greg said and I agree, I’d rather RR get 20 pts and have 14 assists EVERY night cause if that happened then we’d be 3rd in the Eastern Conference instead of hovering just over .500. And I think your comments are pigeon-holing RR and are more negative than ours. Go Cs…

I don’t have a problem with Rondo scoring more when everybody else is struggling, but I just hope he doesn’t try to become Derrick Rose because you’re right, we are a better team with 20 and 14 than 35 and 6. And now Doc is doing like you all are saying and mouthing some crap about how what’s important is making sure Allen and Pierce are happy. But no one ever talks about their selfish little attitudes.

Dude I appreciate that you’re being an avid Rondo fan and trust me, when all the trade Rondo rumors were swirling around, you won’t find a bigger advocate against it than me. But what about the game against the Bulls? Rondo got ALL the praise and THEN some. The reason we’re giving him flak (and not just him) is BECAUSE we know how great of an all around player he is. He is a scorer. But he is also the best PG in the league in terms of being a floor general, which means finding the open man, creating double teams to get people open, calling and running plays so that our half court offense runs smoothly. Again, tonight in my opinion is just a blip on the map for this team. Stop buying so much into the Rondo hate. It will go away with more wins.

Right Greg. Rondo is a point guard so he is a bad guy if he takes 27 shots, even if he is the best scorer on the team, for one game at least, if not in general. Yup, we just GOT to smash him into his little hole.

Rondo played a brilliant game. Since we lost, there definitely is criticism. 6 assists from Rondo will not cut it, even though it would be a damned good night’s work from most point guards. But see, we expect more from Rondo. And we should.

If he had scored 40 tonight and been a little more selfish, we would have won. Still, I think that he should always have ten or more assists when he scores more than twenty, but that’s because he’s effing Rondo, and he’s that good a passer, and the team needs that from him, and his scoring should open up his passing, not vice versa.

But damn, he gave us a freaking monster game tonight.

But yeah, Greg, the people at Celtics blog are truly insane. And I’m sorry if you are catching just a bit of the heat from that.

But you need to wake up to the fact that the kid can REALLY score.

Paul, I openly express my opinion that Rondo is the best PG in the NBA. I’ve had that belief for some time now. He can score all he wants to for all I care, it’s just the assists that need to rise to the 10-12 category. Once that happens, we won’t be arguing anymore I promise that. Because team chemistry will SKYROCKET. That said, I can’t wait to see a good old fashioned Rose-Rondo matchup tomorrow.
27 shots on a night where just about all of our big guns are misfiring is okay with me, since I’m hearing that he genuinely tried to get everyone involved in the game. That didn’t work, so he was forced into a position to be Derrick Rose for us. On off nights like this, that’s fine. Shoot, even on good nights that can happen. It’s all about assists for me though. You never have to question his heart, his effort, defense, any of those things. Forget 40 points, if he had 10 assists tonight, we would have won. I give him an A plus for effort though. The rest of the team just couldn’t get it going is all. That’s something I can live with as long as everyone gave 100 %

paul..you are contradicting yourself when you complain about RR’s 6 assists and say he had a “monster” game. We lost. And if he had 10 assists or more then we’d likely have won. Again, RR’s job is not to jack 27 shots…ever. Read the line again and again until it sinks in and you get it. He’s a PG so go look up what a PG’s job is. Yes, he can have a big game and frankly I like seeing him score big numbers, BUT only if the assists are there. What is instead of 27 shots he had given 5 of those to Ray? What if RA hits 3 3s or 4 2s? We’re a lot closer to getting an ugly win than losing by 10 pts. I know you know hoops but you are dead wrong about RR tonight. Lastly, I blame the loss on PP not rebounding as 6 or 7 would have made a difference and that can be a 10 pt swing right there. Go Cs…

Listen, if what you guys are saying is that we need more than six assists from Rondo, then I will agree, but I’ll point out to you that, for one thing, it’s not entirely up to him, is it? Other guys have to get open, have to look for shots, and have to hit those shots.

Secondly, I think you all need to remember that six assists is a very good night’s work for most players, including most point guards. We expect a lot from Rondo because he is that great a player. And yes, if he does it right, he is the kind of guy who can and should get 40 points and 15 assists. And we need that from him precisely because our team is already really built around him, though we don’t ever admit it.

But part of that is the scoring. This kid is developing into a great scorer. And it is some kind of sports insanity that Boston fans refuse to see it. Don’t be angry with the guy for scoring 35 points and for putting up 27 shots. Think about Larry Bird. You wouldn’t be angry with Larry for numbers like that.

Rondo is a great scorer. Stop being shocked when he scores a lot, and thinking something is wrong.

Now if you guys want to talk about how we need better synergy between Rondo and Pierce then yes, we sure do. Because if we got that going, we would be pretty unstoppable.

Bird was a scorer in college and during his whole career. Rondo is not that type of player. And 6 assists for RR is not good and is roughly 40% below his average. Lastly, I don’t want anyone on the team jacking 27 shots even if they are all going in. That’s not Celtic ball. Go Cs…

I mean 35 points is 35 points. That’s Sportscenter worthy no matter who you are. I just think that most fans have a problem with him changing his role from pass-first to score-first. I personally don’t think that’s what he’s trying to do, I just think that he’s showing us that he can carry this team when we need him to. And you’re right Paul, I mean even PP and RA said earlier in the year that his is Rondo’s team now. They differ to him. With that said, I think the 25-30 point explosions are gonna continue. And when he has an off night like he did in Toronto a couple nights back, then it’s up to the Big 3 to step up.

People – fans, Doc, Ray and Paul especially – need to get over this idea that Rondo is not a scorer, and that it’s a bad thing when he takes shots.

He should have taken more shots tonight. Not less.

And if Paul and Ray and the others had been moving without the ball properly, and spotting up, and all that, Rondo would have passed to them and racked up plenty of assists. If you are unhappy, Paul and Ray, look in the mirror.

We have so many scorers on this team, but increasingly, Rondo is our best option in many ways. I think he should really have twenty points and ten assists on average.

OK, it’s official. paul’s rants are worse than the Cs loss tonight. Congrats paul…you sure proved you don’t understand the role of a PG. Go Cs…

You guys are missing the key reasons the Celtics lost tonight:

1st… they allowed DET to control the glass which led to a lot of easy 2nd chance points. 2nd… they missed a ton of free throws. 3rd… Pierce decided he wasn’t going to play man to man Defense.
4th… JO decided to let every pass go into the low post without even contesting or giving a hard foul, not to to mention the fact he runs the floor like a blind 56 yr old.

Rondo was very good tonite, and so was Wilcox. Pierce wasn’t battling for his shot niether was Ray. If you look at the last 2 Games Doc told Rondo to PUSH THE PACE and stop walking the ball up the court. Not surprisingly, the guys whose offensive numbers have suffered are Pierce, Ray & JO because they refuse to run.

Stop blaming Rondo – he is a willing passer…. almost to a fault, but he cannot pass the ball to himself.

I think pushing the pace is okay for the regular season, but once the game slows down in the playoffs, we’ll need him to run our half court offense.

Hey, read my comments as I covered all of those issues except #4 as I did not see the game and therefore could not comment about who was doing what i.e. JO not protecting the paint. I blame RR because he took 27 shots. He is supposed to get the other guys involved even if it means driving to them and handing the ball off, setting a pick and then moving away. Come-on Jay even you can’t want RR jacking 27 shots and RA only 5? Unless you’ve moved into paul’s dark-side of unblinding ‘Rondo can do no wrong’ I think it’s clear this team underperformed on many levels and the ‘captain’ did not show up. And doc always tells them to “push the pace” but that can’t happen when you don’t control, or make the effort to control, the boards. Go Cs…

That’s a shocking loss. The 15-13 C’s should not loss to the 9-22 D’s. For f–k sake, I hope this team can get some consistency as we come close to the season’s half way point. Are the Big 3 dead and buried? Time will tell.

The point of what we’re saying Paul is that, despite 35 points, we lost the game by double digits. Rondo has been a pass-first pg his whole career. James is tight, 27 shots is an awful lot, and not Celtic basketball. But it’s just one game, not a trend. He still knows his role is pass first and score second.

How many teams have you been in? I can’t even count on my fingers how many I’ve been on. Neither one of us are experts. Po and RA have had inconsisten seasons. But to think that Rondo is our top scorer is exactly why we lost games we’re supposed to win. 27 shots is no what we need from Rondo. Sorry. And yes I pay attention to stats because THEY MATTER. Pp is still scoring 17.3 a game. We just need RA to get his game going and make due without BB until he gets back. We’ll be fine. But rondo doesn’t need to score 35 a game. 20 and 12 is the rondo we need.
