Celtics tried to sign Jeremy Lin… twice

Before cosmic events interfered and New York Knicks fans began raising each other on chairs while chanting “Hava Nagila,” the Boston Celtics reportedly tried to sign Jeremy Lin… twice. (Boston Herald)
According to a source, the Celtics were poised to claim the Knicks sensation off waivers when he was cut by Golden State prior to the start of the season, but Houston chose ahead of them in the waiver order.
When Houston later released him, the Celtics were ready to make a move again, only for the Knicks to take Lin off the wire.
I don’t know much, but I know this: The world would be a worse place if the Celtics had signed Jeremy Lin. Rather than eventually earning a starting role and taking the world by storm while averaging 40 points, 12 assists and 11 turnovers per game (or something like that), Lin would have been relegated to a backup role behind Rajon Rondo (and possibly behind Avery Bradley, too). We never would have been introduced to Linsanity. It would have been more like collective Lindifference.
I know I sound crazy to say I’m glad the Celtics didn’t sign a point guard who’s playing like an MVP, but if the Celtics had signed Lin none of this glorious magic carpet ride would have occurred. Lin landed in a perfect environment. He thrives in D’Antoni’s system. The Knicks have no other worthy point guard. He adjusted to his sea legs while Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire were out of the lineup — Lin doesn’t seem like one to naturally defer, but it’s difficult to imagine he would have demanded the ball the same way he did from day one if those guys had been in the lineup. Everything unfolded perfectly in New York.
Not taking anything away from Lin whatsoever — what he’s done is still remarkable no matter how you look at it — but he landed in a perfect situation to do what he’s done today. He got his one shot, lost himself in the moment, owned it and never let it go, and he deserves all the credit for that. But the same opportunity never would have come in Boston. In Boston he would have been Jeremy Lin, the Harvard graduate who backs up Rajon Rondo. In New York he’s Jeremy Lin, superstar and world icon of hope. I should probably want Lin in Boston, if only to keep the Knicks from gaining such a weapon, but Linsanity is too much fun. I’m rooting for the kid, even if he threatens to make the Atlantic Division a much tougher place.
P.S. — I know Rondo missed eight games and Lin might have gotten his chance. But there’s still no way he would have done what he did while playing alongside the Big Three in Doc Rivers’ offense. And even if he did, he would have landed himself right back on the bench as soon as Rondo returned. So the world would have been deprived of a phenomenon and this website never would have happened. Believe me, we’re better off with Lin ending up in New York.
P.P.S. — But if Lin leads the New York Knicks past the Celtics in the playoffs, this year or any other, I take back everything I said in this post and wish he became Boston’s permanent backup to Rondo.

The Knicks still can’t get past us in the playoffs. With RR and AB’s defense, JL will have to defer to his other players. The Knicks are a comprised of J Lin, Amare, Carmelo, and a whole bunch of jump shooters. No reason Bostson shouldn’t beat them in 5 games.

Um, yet I guess you count Tyson Chandler as a jumpshooter then, Fields? Shumpert? We got a big 4, so do you… what else you got?

Um all Fields, Shumpert, and the rest of you scrubs do is shoot! Lol do you even watch the games? Oh and we don’t have much, just the highest scoring bench in the East.
How about you guys win a playoff game before you get hyped huh?

It was sickening yesterday to see many fans, amidst all the attacks on Rondo, wishing we had Lin. We have a point guard better than Jeremy Lin, though I think at this point it’s clear that Jeremy Lin is for real. BUT WE HAVE A GREAT POINT GUARD. No matter. The scapegoating will never stop until rondo is finally tarred and feathered and run out of town by the meanspirited and nearly insane people who pass for fans in Boston

Idk what to say to you anymore Paul. NOBODY ON THIS SITE BASHED RONDO. We just said that we don’t need 35 points every night. We’ve never needed that to win games. He can score and that’s a valuable asset, but it’s never been something we’ve NEEDED. Get over yourself dude please. And screw Lin, he’s an overrated PG with a very small sample size, but the shortsighted people at ESPN choose to treat him like he’s Micheal Jordan’s heir.

As ignorant as Floy Mayweather’s comments were, he had a point with Lin’s nationality. I still think his story is about basketball and nothing else, but the fact that he’s playing for New York and that he’s a first for his nationality in the NBA certainly boosted the national attention. And that’s a good thing. I just hate how he’s heralded as the next Jordan or something.

Sorry, but this gets me. Lin’s Nationality is American. He’s a Bay Area kid.
Floyd was wrong. A guy broke an NBA record not even MJ or Wilt sniffed. He was days away from being cut (and possibly ending his NBA career), then went on an amazing 6 game streak highlighted by burning Kobe and the 3pt buzzer.
If anything, go after the NY media. They do like to be loud. But we should be no where near Floyd’s trolling comments.

Listen I like his story. He did break an NBA record (even though he did it against mostly horrible teams). I didn’t even mind the hype when it wasn’t so suffocating. It’s absolutely ridiculous now though. You got some people that honestly believe he’s gonna average like 30 ppg with 15 assists his whole career, JUST because of his good start. That’s absolutely absurd. And you’re telling me that the fact that he’s the first Taiwanese-American to play in the NBA doesn’t add another element into his story? C’mon dude. It’s not the only reason, absolutely not. But it definitely is one of the reasons. And there’s really no problem with that in my eyes.

How do the Knicks not surpass the Celts this year? They’re much more talented and are now developing chemistry.

One word…Bench. Our team has way more options off of the bench. And our defense is better than theirs. The only thing we’d have to worry about is getting points on the board. We do that, it’s a repeat of last year. Are you a Celtics fan or a Knicks fan?! geez.

Oh any by the way, who is the only team to beat the Knicks when Lin plays significant minutes?…Oh yeah, the Celtics. You’re a joke.

I’ve been a rabid Celtics fan since 1960. I’m no fan of the Knicks and in fact hated them during the great rivalry years in the early 70′s. Our team is old and in decline. We’ve all seen this coming. Their team is younger, faster and on the rise. They’re going to be better this year. That said, I’d like to see our bench players continue to develop so that we get a head start on rebuilding and maybe win a playoff series this year.

They were younger last year too my friend. Have faith in your team since you call yourself a rabid fan. The pieces are in place for us to make a final title run this year. If you’ve watched the games you’d see that. Rondo is the best pure PG in the game. PP is still PP. Ray Allen is shooting his best 3pt percentage in his career. KG is still our defensive anchor. AB ha emerged as one of the top on-ball defenders in the league. Wilcox is good enough to be our starter from now on. JJ is a promising rookie who can score. BB is the prototype for consistent effort and scoring. KD gives leadership and some big 3′s when we need them. We have a chance my friend. Youth doesn’t mean a lot in the playoffs. Think about the last few champions…Mavericks, Lakers, Lakers, Celtics…not the Heat, Bulls, etc. older teams get it done in the post season when I matters.

Sorry PP is not the same this year. He looks like a full step slower and his drive to play appears to be much less the past week or two. have you been watching Paul play recently? Doesn’t seem like it.

When healthy, our bench is superior and that’s how we can win it all. Lin is having success because he’s a smart player. I watched him decimate the Kings in the first qtr last night with 6 assists as all he did was penetrate and dish. Ergo, nothing that RR doesn’t do all the time, except last night apparently as he took 27 shots. Lin passed and the players hit their shots as everyone was collapsing on Lin. RR is such a superior PG and it’s not even close (mainly because he’s an excellent defender and rebounder). The Knicks system is also helping Lin but also the fact that the players are buying into knowing they’ll get the ball if they move and hit their shots. The Cs tend to stand around way too much as only RA seemingly is in motion consistently. If PP ran like RA, or even one-half as much as RA then our offense would not stagnate. I hope Lin has a great career but remember Baron Davis is still injured and I think he’s a better PG than Lin but may come off the bench as Lin does bring energy. It’s fun to watch and a great story of accomplishment for all to learn about NEVER GIVING UP and taking advantage of opportunities when they appear. Go Cs…

That is a huge factor too. The moral of the story which is NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF. With that said, James do you think the C’s should add somebody at SF from the D-League? A lot of people say its the graveyard of basketball careers, but it’s the same graveyard that spawned Lin. Just throwing that out there.

I’d rather they grab a D-Leaguer as they’ve been playing and and definitely younger than signing guys like SP or even KD who I am not all that thrilled with. Younger guys want to prove themselves and that ‘hustle and energy’ are many times infectious. Go Cs…
