Mavericks 89, Celtics 73: Things somehow keep getting worse

The Celtics spent most of Monday night experimenting with various ways not to score points. Chris Wilcox threw a pass that almost shattered the backboard. Avery Bradley hit the very bottom of the rim with one layup attempt. Mickael Pietrus was called for a palming violation on one possession, when he wasn’t endangering rims with laser bricks on most of his other possessions. Greg Stiemsma set two moving picks, and Wilcox once shoved Dirk Nowitzki in the back for no apparent reason while Paul Pierce was driving for what would have been an easy look.
Nothing comes easy for the Celtics this season, and especially when three of their best offensive players sit out for various reasons, the possibility is there for the scoreboard to get uglier than the hitch in Charles Barkley’s golf swing. If the two losses to the Pistons were alarming and the loss to the Chicago Bulls was disturbing, Monday’s 89-73 loss to Dallas was worse, the type of performance that makes teams look in the mirror and frown in response to the bloodied, disfigured mug looking back. The Celtics were out-rebounded 51-44, and that number was worse before garbage time, which lasted approximately 18 minutes. They had 16 turnovers to Dallas’ eight. They shot just 39.2 percent. Most damning, they just don’t have any spurt-ability. Every run the Celtics go on is painstaking, every point they score is like pushing a boulder uphill.
Jermaine O’Neal injured himself (again). Wilcox departed after hurting his adductor, a body part I never heard of prior to 45 minutes ago. Avery Bradley hit a bunch of midrange jumpers, which was very nice even if it didn’t seem sustainable. E’Twaun Moore played garbage time and hit some shots, a skill the Celtics could certainly use off the bench, since nobody else can score and Pietrus’ perimeter shot has gone AWOL. Paul Pierce scored and (per usual) took advantage of mismatches whenever the Mavericks switched screens.
Dirk Nowitzki abused everyone the Celtics sent his way, which was only natural since Boston’s top two power forwards missed the outing, leaving the overmatched Wilcox and the undersized Pietrus as the two “best” matchups for the German. J.O. occasionally switched onto Nowitzki, a sight that instantly brought nightmares, even before Nowitzki’s jump shot inevitably swished gently through the net.
If there is a positive to tonight’s loss, it is that Rajon Rondo’s importance should now be better understood. The All-Star break cannot come soon enough.

I thought it was pretty great that the Celtics had Bradley shoot like crazy after spending weeks complaining every time Rondo had the temerity to put up a shot.

Paul how old are you? You remind me of se 12 year old girl who’s in love with her favorite boy band lead singer…Rondo is a big boy, I think he can take criticism. He’s had to his whole career. Every player goes through it when their team struggles. You think we should just pamper him? That’s not the celtics.

You know what, Greg? I AM in love with Rondo some. I really love a true talent, and Rondo is a very special talent. Like all the great talents the Celtics have had before, other than Bird, he may not be Mr. Normal. Maybe that turns you off. Or maybe you just don’t get it that Rondo is a special talent. Fine. You see what you see and I see what I see.
But I see a team that is TOTALLY full of bullshit at this point. They constantly have Rondo on an invisible leash, and they clearly bitch like mad about it if he scores, even though they may not wash that particular dirty linen publically (it’s just obvious from the way Rondo acts like he has a chain on him in the next game), and then no sooner is Bradley in than he is jacking up shots left and right.
Bit of a double standard there, no? Yes. There is.
I love talent, Greg. A lot. I think that is what makes sports exciting. I think that is what it is really all about. And Rondo has ‘it’. He has more ‘it’ than any Celtic I’ve seen in a long time.
Sorry you don’t see it. Maybe you will.

This team is wasting a genuine talent. I HATE THAT. I hate it a lot. And they may have psychologically tormented the guy so much, and demonized him around the league so badly, that his career may be ruined. And I fucking hate it.

paul…how is AB taking 11 shots in a game “jacking up shots” compare to RR taking 27??? Please enlighten me. And exactly who on the Cs is “demonizing” RR? Please give me some specific quotes and not your misguided perception. Go Cs…

As regards Rondo’s importance, this team will NEVER get it. Never. By never I mean as long as Paul Pierce is here. It’s important for both the Celtics and Rondo to move on.
Like I said, just look at the way they had Bradley shooting lights out today, after endlessly complaining about Rondo shooting. It couldn’t be more clear that this team has long since mentally parted paths with Rondo

Who is complaining about RR shooting other than knowledgeable posters, like me, that object to his jacking 27 shots and RA getting only 5 and PP 11 in a game when his job is to distribute first and shoot second??? Go Cs…

Wtf Paul psychological torment? Demonizing? Dude you’re I’m way over your head…rajon rondo had real talent and I’ve repeatedly said he’s the best point guard…I guess you choose not to see that…but whatever, have your man crush on Rondo. I’m sure he feels the same for you.

Look…ease up on paul as he is just frustrated, as we are all. RR is staying and then when everyone is healthy we’ll see if this bunch plays like we’ve seen at times this season. That said, I knew we’d lose this game days ago, even if RR and KG had played, as the rebounding deficiencies are killing any chance of competing. We had 17 rebs at the half and Dallas had that many at the end of the 1st QTR. We give up way too many offensive rebs and don’t get after it on our own defensive end. MP showed tonight he can rebound so I hope that continues and AB had a nice game and will be a valuable back-up to RR come the playoffs. I have more problems with PP taking ill-advised 3s with 3 men on him instead of working the ball in or passing to an open teammate than any issue with RR or anyone else. Doc is still a problem but this team gained some valuable experience tonight and please let’s get rid of Dooling and give his minutes to EM, who did more in 7 mins than KD did in 17. Go Cs…another loss Wed, a break for rest, and then get back to work.

Anybody who cannot recognize that Rondo is the Celtics’ best player… BY FAR really doesn’t understand the game.
He is the only player that can get his own shot. He is the only player that can break a defense down without losing the dribble and STILL create. He is the only PURE passer on this ballclub that understands how to make his teammates better. It really is not Rajon’s fault that his starting mates run the floor like 50-yr old men at the YMCA rec ctr league. Rondo is the best pure playmaker and passer the Celtics have had since Bird. Rondo is vastly underpaid. Rondo is a 1st team NBA All-Defense PG. Rondo has an edge, a fire that you cannot teach. He is the best rebounding guard in the league. Rondo is among the League Leaders in FG% for Point Guards. Rondo leads the NBA in Steals. Rondo has the most Triple-Doubles this season in the NBA for you stat freaks. Rondo is the engine that drives this team. It’s not his fault Paul Pierce can’t get the F out of the way and let him run the team. Give Rondo some ATHLETES to play with…. please!!
Paul, don’t take any BS.

Hey there Boston freaks. We are all in this together. Differences of opinion make for a healthy debate. No need for us to take personal shots at each other. This team is in trouble, and as much as I LOVE, OMG, another man crush the Big 3, this team is NOT playing like champions. I don’t like to admit it, but LAL played like champs make it to the Finals 2 out of 3 years. Just painful that Kobe’s 5th title had to happen against a team who were trying to build a new dynasty. This year OKC, MIA and perhaps SAS are playing like champs. However, anything can happen come playoffs. One thing is guaranteed: Boston will have to slay some giants if they want to make it back to the Finals again. I really don’t know why this team is playing so crap. They have all the talent but no action.

Not happening. Denver can match, as he’s a restricted FA, and can give him a 5-yr deal. We need to get realistic people and stop thinking a ‘savior’ is coming in the door. This team, if healthy, has the talent to win it but they need to bring it every night and in every quarter and so far that’s not the case…obviously. Go Cs…
