Kevin Garnett returning tonight against Thunder, says Doc Rivers

After missing two consecutive outings due to a personal matter, Kevin Garnett is expected to return Thursday night when the Celtics travel to Oklahoma City to meet the Thunder. (Boston Herald)

“We just have to get our guys back,” coach Doc Rivers said. “The season is long. Who wants to be a game under .500 going into Oklahoma? Having said that, we’ll get Kevin back, which is huge for us with Paul and Ray. After the break Brandon will be back, and then we have to make a run.”

We spend a lot of time wondering why Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have looked so pedestrian lately. Part of it has been the absence of Garnett and Bass, the two primary floor-spacing bigs on Doc Rivers’ roster.

“When (Garnett and Bass) are out, you have nobody who can stretch the game at (power forward), and then Paul and Ray’s games are going to struggle,” Rivers said. “They’re going to clog the paint and trap everything, and that’s what they should do.”

“Like we always say, we play everybody, and we have to play a little differently. The difficulty for us is not having Kevin and Brandon. With non-shooters (on the floor) they’re trapping Paul and Ray all over the floor. There’s not a lot of ways to go.”

If you’re keeping track at home, the Celtics have averaged 83.4 points per game since Bass last played, including just 77.0 points per game in the two games Garnett also missed. There are other factors at play of course, but Boston misses having bigs who pose threats. I’ve loved Chris Wilcox, but the next time an opponent even thinks about defending him during a pick-and-pop situation will be the first. And teams treat Jermaine O’Neal like he just laid the worst fart ever — they clear the area and give him as much space as they can.

The Celtics at their best are a jump-shooting team that can’t get to the hoop very often. The Celtics without Garnett and Bass out of the lineup become a jump-shooting team with just two jump-shooters in the starting lineup and still very few creators — and the results have been predictably gory.

So welcome back, Kevin. You’re returning to a mess, but you’re part of the solution.

Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.

Garnett is an unselfish player who cares about things like setting screens like he means them with proper timing, and he knows how to release and offer a pass option to the guy with the ball. He should help a lot at both ends of the floor.

Funny though that Doc ‘forgot’ to mention that we need Rondo back to make a run. Rondo won’t be back. Not for long, anyway.

So what are you gonna do when Rondo doesn’t leave? Are you even gonna support the team anymore? You make it seem like you and Rondo have some kind of relationship dude get over yourself.

I didn’t know the Cs are paying pierce 15plus m/y to take advantage of the floor spread by garnett & bass. I thought HIS job was to spread the floor for the bigs’ isos and the guards’ drives to the hoop.
do I sound a little bitter against pierce? well, that’s exactly how I feel.

Have to agree that PP isn’t showing much leadership this year and has certainly stopped hustling and rebounding as he should be. Maybe he’s already coasting but that creates bad habits and his game reeks right now of mediocrity. Go Cs…

Pierce led us from 27 down to win a against the magic. He also led us to what…5 straight wins? That’s why a lot of people don’t really want rondo as the center of our offense because pierce is a proven scorer throughout his whole career. His play may have been inconsistent this year, but let’s not act like he isn’t our captain.

Come-on, even you must admit he’s not playing total Celtic ball as he has in the past. He camps at the 3-line like Sheed used to and never, well hardly ever, follows his shot for the rebound (or rebound in general – only 12 rebs in last 5 games) which is tough to do falling away all the time, and hardly hustles for loose balls or sets any picks. His defense has not been as stout either. Just what I’m seeing when I watch or review the stats. Go Cs…

I suppose you’re right. But there’s no doubt of what he’s capable of doing when he’s on his game. I think he’s been coasting because he’s trying to conserve his energy for the final run.

Unfortunately, we cannot afford to coast. Go Cs…
