Woj: Paul Pierce most likely to be traded from Boston Celtics
On NBC Sports Talk Tuesday night, Adrian Wojnarowski said Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge have decided internally that the Boston Celtics are not contenders. No big shock there, since they have both presumably been watching the same games we have. But Woj added that Paul Pierce — not Rajon Rondo or anybody else — is the most likely Celtic to be traded prior to the March 15 deadline.
“Pierce is the most likely because he has years left on his deal. Remember, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are free agents at the end of this year. They can just let them lapse off the cap and then take the cap space and go forward with it,” said Wojnarowski.
Woj’s contention makes sense. If Ainge does not care much for loyalty (which seems to be the case), shipping away Pierce for expiring contracts could open up enough cap space for the Celtics to add any two max players this offseason, and probably have a little loot left over afterward. But the problem is that there are two marquee free agents this summer (Dwight Howard and Deron Williams) and a pile of dung beneath them. Reloading in free agency would be almost impossible unless Ainge could convince Howard and/or Williams to sign in Boston, and that becomes an even more difficult task when the cupboard is bare, which it would be if Pierce were gone. And if you’re one for details, Williams plays the same position as Rondo.
The Celtics could (and probably would, knowing Ainge) try to ship Pierce for young, legitimate talent, but there aren’t too many teams lining up to exchange young, legitimate talent for a 34-year old who’s owed $31 million over the next two seasons. A package for Pierce would thus seem likely to include expiring contracts and draft picks — and in my opinion, it would really suck to give away the staple of the franchise in return for some cap space and a slot in the NBA Draft. But that’s my loyalty and fandom speaking. In reality, the Celtics have some supremely tough decisions to make in the next couple weeks.

Ainge is an idiot, he better not trade Pierce. He’s already done enough damage to the chemistry of this team and that’s not even bringing in the loyalty aspect Pierce has for the franchise.

If Rondo wants to stay a Celtic and he can get over the trade of Perk, I think he should definitely stay. Out of the two, I would rather trade off Pierce. Like it or not, Rondo is the future and I would be looking to build the franchise around him and the new young players, GS,AB and JJ. I love the Big 3 but lets face it, they ain’t exactly performing. Disappointing to say the least but it is what it it. I feel sorry for Pietrus. He came to Boston with the aspiration to win a title and so far that dream looks like it’s goin nowhere. Still, the season ain’t over and who knows what this team could come up with. We’ve all been there before. A serious of lows and then we get a high and we think were the 2008 champs all over again. I really hope this team can address it’s problems and put it together. I still feel that this is the best line up we have had since 08. Go the ALMIGHTY Boston Celtics.

pierce for howard AND williams for rondo and o’neal.
bothe deals would work according to the espn trade machine.
I really hate the idea of trading rondo, because he’s the future of this franchise.
and I hate the idea of trading pierce, but at the same time I fell he somehow deserves it, for the way he’s been coasting as of lately.
but, signing RA and KG in free agency for veterans’ minimum, this team would be locked and loaded for the near future.
ok, dreams are for free

Nice dream but Williams is headed to Dallas unless DH decides to sign with NJ. And maybe Dallas gets DH too. And why would Orl want PP? PP needs to go to a team on the cusp of moving far into the playoffs that has young talent in spare. As bad as PP has played this year I just don’t think there’s any trade solution available. Go Cs…

I don’t think we should trade any of the Big Four. I think loyalty matters, and I think Rondo is clearly someone to build around.
And I’ll say this: even if Ainge CAN in fact build a winner without concern for loyalty, I WILL NOT CARE. I will NOT follow a team built that way. If there isn’t more to the game than winning or losing, there isn’t enough reason to care.

I agree wholeheartedly. Rondo is our future and when the big 3 retire, he’ll be the unquestionable face of our franchise. A lot of Boston fans are ignorant if they think we should trade rondo. I believe once the team is really his, then he’ll be more consistent.

paul, loyalty must be twofold.
I agree on rondo, even if I believe he’s overrated/flawed/underachieving (choose the adjective and the explanation you prefer).
I agree on KG, who played great all season long (with the exception of the first few games AND the lakers matchup).
I could agree on ray, who signed an extension for a reasonable amount of money and played according (actually, way beyond) what his age allows him.
but pierce no. I used to LOVE the captain, for a number of reasons its not even worth mentioning. but you just can’t start coasting 2 and 1/2 years before the end of your contract.
grind your teeth, work jard, do your best, wipe your ass off. THEN you’re allowed to suck. that’s not the case with pierce.

So, all of a sudden, halfway into the season, we’re just supposed to give up? C’mon people be true fans…I believe in this team wholeheartedly. We currently have the best team since ’08 and I think we have a shot this year. If the C’s management has given up on the team, then fuck them. Ubuntu got us the success we’ve had this year, and it’s our brand of basketball. Idk if I’ll watch anymore if he blows up this team. We’re mired in mediocrity this year SO FAR, but I still think we can catch fire. Call me delusional, but above all else, call me loyal.
