Jackie MacMullan: Danny Ainge’s asking price ‘really high’

https://twitter.com/#!/MrTrpleDouble10/status/177792449446551552

Ainge’s asking price for the Core Four SHOULD be really high. Even if the Celtics play out the season as is, they are in good position to build for the future, with Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce and oodles of cap space. Forcing a trade that doesn’t make sense is counterproductive to Boston’s future, which — considering that (sorry) they aren’t title contenders this year — should be the only object in Ainge’s vision.

For whatever it’s worth, Doc Rivers suggested again today during an interview on WEEI that the Celtics could very well abstain from major moves at the trade deadline.

“I don’t expect anything big to come down. I would be shocked if nothing came down, to be honest. … There’s a lot of ways to make a trade at the deadline. Sometimes just to give your team hope, sometimes when you don’t make a trade, it tells your team we’re not doing anything and this is the way we think this team is good enough to win. So it’s just, sometimes trades are aesthetic and sometimes they’re meant for other reasons, and I think there’s a lot of ways to use it.”

In all seriousness, because you can’t trade a coach (too bad), I think KG and RA will be coming off the bench next season and that portends to an incredible bench the likes no NBA team has ever seen. This team can win it all but they have to show up every night, play hard, rebound, and fight like they mean it as opposed to just going through the motions (my usual word is coasting). go Cs…

I agree with all that, but I would add that we have to play the young ones, folding them into the mix. This isn’t optional anymore. The Big Three have old legs. They are fully capable of playing brilliantly, but they are NOT capable of consistently carrying the loads they once could. It doesn’t matter if rookie mistakes and such hurt us. We simply do not have any choice. WASN’T LAST NIGHT PROOF ENOUGH, DOC?!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have to be more flexible with your rotation.

And we HAVE TO KEY THIS TEAM AROUND RONDO. Period. It doesn’t matter if it’s a struggle at times. We must must must go with Rondo. Again, this is the only option. Rondo is our young rising star. We have to put the challenge squarely on his shoulders. Sometimes he will fall. Sometimes he will rise. But it’s the way we need to go.

And that means, in part, we MUST establish Rondo’s attacking offensive game in the first quarter. That must be our first concern. Every game.

And Rondo must press on defense. Doc must not allow any excuses from him. We have to press on defense.

I agree re the young players as EM and JJ should have been in the game when we got down by 15 pts. RR can’t push unless they rebound, which goes hand-in-hand. Very frustrating to see this group waste games like last nights. Go Cs…

So say we use all that “effort” that you guys think will magically generate rebounds, which is retarded in its own right.
What happens when we still lose the rebounding battle, get eat up the floor, and get raped by young teams on the fast break? Doc values a set defense way more than rebounds. You know why? Because Boston’s defense is what keeps them in games. Going for rebounds agains teams that are 2, maybe even 3 times as big as ours is a good idea, but we aren’t gonna win many rebounding battles. That’s a fact. Bigger teams win more rebounding battles. That’s like…elementary basketball knowledge. But go ahead, think that just because you want to rebound, you’ll rebound. And I’ll laugh at how we get beat up the floor 10/10 times.

So you think PP can’t rebound better and RA can’t rebound because other teams are taller and we need to “get back”? WTF? How about we rebound and not give up 16 offensive rebs for 2nd shots and rebound our own shots so we get more opportunities and stop opponents owning the fast break? How many guys does it take getting back ? All 5? Why is RR many times the only C rebounding vs 4-5 opponents? You say to others to watch the games, so what the hell are you watching? You ever see PP follow his shot after jacking a 3 or better yet a fade-away jumper? Since you are the expert now on this you explain why we won the title in 2008 as the 3rd best rebounding team, lost in 2010 as the 23rd best and now you think we have a chance to win it all and we’re DEAD LAST – 30th. How does that work Greg? There’s a reason Pat Riley coined – “No rebounds, no rings”. Just because we lack height doesn’t mean our players can’t box out. But they certainly can’t if they’re always running in the opposite direction. Come-on. Just watch the positioning of our players when other teams shoot and you will see that our guys are not even trying to rebound. We win more when we win the rebounding and lose 99% when we don’t. Go Cs…

All I know is, Doc is respected among EVERY coach in the NBA. He essentially put Tom Thibedeau on the map. He’s regarded as the ultimate players’ coach and ALWAYS inspires his players to play to their fullest ability. As I stated above, just because rebounding turns you on a lot James, that doesn’t mean that if we get out rebounded we’ll lose. There are so many other things that Doc does focus on, and it’s sad yet comical that you think you know basketball enough to criticize him. More comical than anything. If anything, we should trade Internet bloggers…

So he’s respected? So he is everyone’s friend…like when he chats up other team’s players during games. Red would have chewed his ass out for that. He has no fire, his rotations SUCK, he never benches anyone or chews them out and because he coaches with a guard’s mentality he leaves the bigs alone when he should focus on improving ALL facets of our weaknesses (especially rebounding). Yes, our defense is good. But imagine how much better it would be if we rebounded in the top 15 teams instead of last. We should have kept Thibodeau as once he left our team started it’s slide into mediocrity and our 20-18 records screams that quality of play. F*** Doc, he sucks. And I am entitled to my opinion. And I do know basketball well enough to criticize him. I’ve been watching and playing longer than Doc is old! Go Cs…

But don’t forget…last night was not only bad, but historically bad….you talk about effort? That’s exactly the kind of catalyst we need to set the fire under the team to make them understand what it’s gonma take to be competitive those year. I had thought all the nay-sayers would do the trick, but I guess the level of pride that they carry blocks all that out.

One problem that has continued for the last several years is they think they can show up and that’s all that’s necessary to get the win (I also fault Doc for allowing this trait). They coast way too much and are light-switch flippers and when they don’t show up then games like last night happen way too often. Watch them give effort tomorrow but then on Sunday vs the Lakers (and on national TV) they will play like we expect them to. To bad they don’t hold themselves to that standard. Go Cs…

    Greg…here’s a stat for you to contemplate…

Games Cs have lost while out-rebounded – 16 (of 18 total losses or 89%).

    And to be fair…

Games Cs have won while out-rebounded – 8 (of 20 wins or 40%).

I’d prefer they win the rebounding every night as that gives them a much better chance of not losing. Go Cs…

Okay I get it James. But don’t expect them to lead the league in rebounding. But I agree they shouldn’t be dead last.

It’s really strange, we’ve got the 12th all time rebounder on our list and we’ve got problems rebounding. The world has surely gone mad. I hope Kevin’s reading.
