Dwight Howard opting in for 2012-2013 season, according to report

Just admit it: a small part of you, perhaps even a sliver deep inside your subconscious, held out hope that Danny Ainge could somehow convince Dwight Howard to join the Boston Celtics this summer. Perhaps you even envisioned a starting lineup of Howard and the current core four, with Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce rejuvenated alongside the game’s best center and Rajon Rondo finally benefiting from a (non-Chris Wilcox division) target who thrives on the receiving end of alley oops.
Not going to happen. Not even a “Dumb And Dumber, one-in-a-million, so you’re telling me there’s a chance” chance, if reports that Howard is opting in for the 2012-2013 season are true.
Barring a trade deadline move of their own, the Celtics can now look forward to having tons of cap space in a free agency class that officially sucks. Entering the trade deadline, Deron Williams is now the only stud free agent (if you want to get a bitter beer face, read the entire list of 2012 free agents) — and he happens to play the same position as Rondo, Boston’s franchise cornerstone, who Danny Ainge promises isn’t going to get moved (which means there’s still a 10 percent chance he gets dealt by tomorrow at 4 p.m.). Basically, the Celtics are looking at a rebuilding process, or perhaps another year or two of NBA purgatory (making the playoffs without a legitimate chance to contend) with Allen and Garnett retained on smaller contracts.
The Celtics may not be headed for another 24-58 season any time soon. They may not be returning to the Gerald Green era. They may not need to start Brett Szabo or Marty Conlon next season. But there are no quick fixes available unless Ainge pulls a superstar rabbit out of his hat. And sadly, I don’t see any rabbits on the horizon.

Until DH signs the waiver he is still likely to be traded and then become an FA unless he likes where he is traded to. So there is some hope but I’ve never counted on DH coming to the Cs. That said, we have talent and if RA becomes the 6th man (start MP in his spot) and KG starts one more year and then comes off the bench, too and we get Green back I think there’s enough talent, assuming EM and JJ and any new FA or signing (D-league?) gets playing time that is meaningful, to compete for a title. We can find a center to rebound and all be be great again as we rebuild but also not tank the team in order to get better. Go Cs…

Oddly enough, I have more confidence in Ainge. When I look at what he did this offseason, other than torment Rondo, it makes me want to see what he could bring to us this summer. That is, if he can restrain his manic inner jerk. We already have a deep and talented team. Resign what we have and bring in a player or two or three and we could be going places. We don’t have to have Howard. We already have a fricken hellacious player in Rondo, and quite a few others with some serious talent. Bass is looking like a quality starter. The Big Three seem to be aging gracefully. Bradley is a high quality backup behind Rondo – no way would I let him go.

Did the earth stop moving a few minutes ago when you posted this or am I dreaming? Have to agree on all pts, except of course the DA/jerk comment. We have excellent talent and if this team ever focused on rebounding collectively better then the sky is the limit. I would even like to see RR and AB play together sometimes as a press-duo, which I think could be very disruptive and effective. Go Cs…
