Celtics 88, Wizards 76: Avery Bradley’s career night

Avery Bradley hit one 3-pointer during his first 74 NBA appearances. In the past two games, he’s made two. Bradley entered Sunday’s tilt against the Washington Wizards with a season high of 12 points. He scored 15 in the first quarter, during which time the Washington Wizards could muster only 12. Bradley started in place of Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus and decided to torture the woeful Wizards with backdoor cuts, which a superior team could probably cover but Washington was helpless to stop while falling 88-76.

In the continued progression of Bradley’s game, this is what he has become: a defensive-minded ball of athleticism who is beginning to understand how to play the game of basketball, even if his skill set has yet to catch up to his burgeoning basketball IQ. Bradley, a blind puppy during his initial NBA season last year, is learning ways to mask his flaws and magnify his strengths, and every once in a while that will result in outbursts like the one Bradley had today, which was not so much a testament to his skill development as his growing mental capacity. Rookies become second-year players, who later become veterans, and Bradley showcased the ability today to think a step ahead of his opponents. Those opponents were indeed the Washington Wizards, not exactly known for their own mental prowess, but rather than lessen Bradley’s accomplishments, the weak opposition only served to put his intelligence underneath a microscope.

The Wizards hit just three of their first 25 shot attempts, Bradley made his first eight, and it took Washington 16 minutes to finally catch up to Bradley’s point total. That was about the time Greg Stiemsma began lighting up the scoreboard, Boston’s other youth who has developed in leaps and bounds during this lockout season taking the baton from his younger teammate. At halftime, Stiemsma and Bradley had combined for 29 points. The Wizards had just 34. I imagine Randy Wittman did not fully suspect such an offensive onslaught from the duo.

The second half predictably featured a letdown, and the Wizards kind of, somewhat, almost attempted to make things interesting. But the Celtics were in control even when they weren’t in control and did what they needed to maintain a comfortable lead throughout.

Hooefilly this gives AB the confidence in his offensive game. It looks like he worked on his jumper a bit, and he needs to capitalize on his slashing ability as well. What’s up with Rondo with only 4 points? Not bitching or anything because 11 assists is standard Rondo brilliance. And I understand Hollins isn’t gonna jump steimsma at this point in the rotation, but he needs his playing time. This might sound crazy, but we should move KG to the 4, and put Hollins in at the 5. Have Steim come in behind him. And have Bass come in behind KG. because our bench needs more scoring. The alternative is to start Steimsma at the 5, KG at the 4 and bring Hollins behind Steim. Either way Bass needs to come off of the bench so that we won’t blow leads like we did today. It’s a huge drop off in scoring between our starters and our bench. And does anyone remember Ainge and Doc saying that we were gonna use Bradley at the 2 spot behind ray this year??! What happened to that idea???

It seems like there’s really something going on with Rondo. He let John Wall get to the rim at will in the third quarter and only attempted one shot in the first half (the halfcourt prayer at the end of the quarter).

After the game, Doc Rivers was asked about Rondo’s passiveness and he replied, “Yeah, it’s nothing to do with health, it’s just Rondo. When we win, I feel good about it.”

But what happens when you don’t win, Doc?

Apparently that’s when Doc yells at Rondo and that’s when the “character issues” arise. Rondo probably just wanted to get out of Bradley’s way because he was on early, and I’m assuming ROndo was okay with not scoring tonight.

rondo is starting to show a pattern of turning into a globetritter when we have a big lead and turning it over like its his job.ill take the silence from his fan club tonight as an admission of guilt.

There’s plenty of points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals to be made, so go if a guy goes out there and gets his, it’s for the sake of the team. Every player has off and on nights. Always good to have players on your team steppin up… Good win Celtics.

Sorry for the lateness of this post but I was too busy with work until now. I’m glad we won of course but there are some real glaring problems that need to be addressed before we get into the playoffs. Sorry to be a downer but here’s what I gleamed from the stats:

The C’s shot 17 less shots than Wash because they gave up 16 offensive rebs. We lost the rebounding but won the game because Wash shot a woeful 34% and were 3-14 on 3s. If they shot better we lose. We cannot keep giving up 11+ offensive rebs a night much-less 16. We’re on defense and we let two Wash forwards who averaged 10 rebs between them get 23 f’in boards last night. Again, we don’t rebound properly and unless we start we’re gonna get killed in the playoffs. RH played 13 mins and had 1 reb. While he may not know the plays I sure hope he rebounds better than that. PP rebounded great again (+8) and so we’re now 9-2 in games he has & rebs plus. Winning by 12 pts over a hapless Wash team on our own home-court isn’t that impressive. Lastly, we had a lousy 9 fast break points. Apparently, from all I’ve read and heard RR took most of the game off. Very frustrating as he needs to play hard all the time and not just when the national TV lights are on, or he feels like it. And now after a great 1st QTR we stink it up and give it all back in the 2nd QTR vs Charlotte. Go Cs…f’in play hard will you please!

And AB was great and should get a long-term deal immediately, or as soon as he can. Maybe EM will get a chance to show his talent in time so we can use him in the playoffs. Better EM than KD. Go Cs…
