Keyon Dooling tentatively out of Boston Celtics rotation

Keyon Dooling has not been nursing an injury or bothered by illness during his recent three-game run of DNPs. He simply has managed to play himself out of Doc Rivers’ now-eight-man rotation.

Allow Doc to explain. (ESPN Boston)

Rivers admits he’s leaning on his eight-man core (which will expand to nine when Mickael Pietrus returns, though Sasha Pavlovic’s minutes could get squeezed then) and Dooling is left waiting for an opportunity.

“It’s game to game with Keyon and that’s tough,” Rivers admitted. “I think that’s tough for the player, [but] that’s where we are right now. When teams are big at the 2 or 3, then those are not Keyon nights. When teams are smaller — playing two smaller guards — those are nights that Keyon will probably play. I can tell you he’s been a pro about it, he’s been great. He’s the first guy that talks in the locker room and on the bench, he’s a fantastic guy to have on your basketball team.”

After Avery Bradley displayed the ability to jump over large buildings in a single bound play either guard position well, it became clear that Dooling — who has struggled with his shot almost all season — would play a smaller role. I didn’t foresee that being the role of cheerleader, but Dooling was clearly competing a step behind all his other Celtics teammates — even Sasha Pavlovic, who has oddly given the Celtics great minutes for weeks now.

Rivers’ eight-man rotation is working. Everybody knows his specific function and competes within his limitations. Seriously, how many times per game do you watch a Celtics possession and say, “Damn, that was a horrible shot. What’s he doing, trying to impersonate Nate Robinson?” Almost never. How many times do you watch the Celtics defense and scream at the television, “Where was the fucking defensive rotation, asshole? What’d you take a lesson from Sheed?” Almost never. The Celtics are functioning as a reliable unit that generally works in cohesion for 24 seconds each possession.

Doc felt that Dooling wasn’t playing well enough to warrant minutes. I don’t mind that decision at all. But it was definitely strange during the waning minutes of the Philadelphia blowout when Avery Bradley played garbage time. Maybe Rivers just didn’t want to bruise Dooling’s pride? I don’t know.

Every active player should be in rotation and doing their fair share. At the end of the year, they can safely say, I did what I could to win a title and have some satisfaction in the effort they put in. Just because you get a core which plays well is not a reason to forget about your other players. Give those guys some burn as well. JJ, EM, KD, RH etc, etc

Doc Rivers has to deal with season ending injuries (Jeff Green,Chris Willcox and Jermaine O’Neal).Doc is not going to give many minutes to players who can’t get the job done (Marquis Daniels and Ryan Hollins) or don’t have enough experience (rookies JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore) while fighting for playoff seeding.

Yes, but if BB had gone down to injury last night wouldn’t it be helpful if JJ had received enough playing time to at least maybe give 60-70% of BB’s game? When the Cs are up by 15-20 pts in the 3rd qtr or beginning of the 4th qtr it isn’t going to end in a loss if EM/JJ and RH (who was signed to help with rebounding) get into the game and get some experience playing with the core starters and bench players. Garbage time does not help these type of players get better. AB is a perfect example of a player who excelled because Doc was forced to play him. Same can be said for GS who was a D-leaguer and look how well he’s playing because he got minutes. I’d prefer they get time in case needed later. Go Cs…

I think using only 8 players is denying your team the capabilities of the other 4 that are available. I think RH/EM/JJ have all shown much more ability, confidence, and have performed well enough to get minutes. KD has shown he has not performed well and I think he should be waived for another big, which you cannot have too many of. We signed RH to help with rebounding and he also gives another 6 fouls to use. I think Doc has cut the rotation way too early in the season as when we’re up 15+ late in the 3rd qtr or 4th qtr then those other bench players should get to play with the others to build their experience as an injury here or there can then call for their use and how good will they be if they haven’t been used? I understand the need for a core playoff usage but we’re not in the playoffs yet. Go Cs…keep the stellar play and effort up!

I’ve bad mouthed Doc all year but now he’s proven he knows what he’s doing. I’m almost afraid of Pietrus coming back b/c it might shake up the chemistry that’s working so well. And Pietrus hasn’t exactly been a consistent shooter this year.

I think Pietrus should come off the bench. That way we have another formidable offensive weapon sitting right next to Ray. That will make the backbone of this team stronger.
