Celtics 102, Magic 98: Short-handed Celtics do enough to survive

If you told me at the beginning of the season that Avery Bradley and Sasha Pavlovic would start a mid-April tilt against the Orlando Magic, I would have puked on my shirt, walked into my closet to retrieve a new one, cried for 20 minutes, eaten two gallons of chocolate ice cream, and then braced myself for all sorts of ugly. But this is not the beginning of the season, so when Bradley erupted for 17 first-half points I was not surprised, and when Pavlovic actually played like Pavlovic, which is to say with hesitancy and a lack of polish, I was.
We’ve gotten to the second paragraph of this recap without mentioning Paul Pierce, and for that I extend my apologies to The Truth. It seems that whenever Rajon Rondo misses time, Pierce morphs into a 6-foot-7 version of Boston’s favorite No. 9, and tonight was no different. Pierce established a new career high with 14 assists, spent much of his night running the pick-and-roll flawlessly, and generally played the roll of point forward which the Celtics needed from him. One of Pierce’s favorite saying is “give the game what it needs.” One night the Celtics required 43 points (actually, more) because they can’t stop anybody, so Pierce did that. The next night, also known as “tonight,” the Celtics required dimes because of Rondo’s absence; Pierce, as Pierce tends to do, obliged. He also drilled every big shot down the stretch, which was a plus.
Glen Davis started the night with a barrage of made dunks and layups, prompting me to fondly remember the days when drool came pouring out of his mouth. When Von Wafer entered the game a few minutes later and re-introduced himself to the TD Garden crowd with an and-one, I almost expected Stephon Marbury, Nate Robinson and Mikki Moore to run onto the court and score 10 points apiece. Sadly, no such occurrence came true.
Orlando made a run to cut the lead to one point during the fourth quarter, and Davis dunked with 30 seconds left to cut the C’s lead to two again. That was when ‘Da Truth went back to his normal strength, shot-making.
P.S. — There will be no eating in Greg Stiemsma’s front yard, Earl Clark.
P.P.S. — E’Twaun Moore doesn’t always score or get minutes, but he carries himself like someone who will be good at some point down the road. You can trust me, too: I’m the same guy completely wrote off Bradley last season, even though he was just 20 years old.

My mom always told me that too much of a good thing can hurt you…she must’ve forgot that The Truth, even though it hurts sometimes, is never a bad thing no matter how much you take it. Pierce showcased his all-NBA skills, and honestly he should be in the discussion for Top 50 all time honors. I don’t even want to hear about the rebounding and second-chance-points differential, or the mostly ineffective pick-and-roll defense. It was a very ugly game that The Truth was gratuitous enough to make watchable. Props to Bradley and Steimer for showing up today. And props to Steimer for getting that huge rebound towards the end. But dear God I can’t wait till GrandTheftRondo, Jesus Shuttleworth, and Air France make their return. And what’s up withBass? His numbers have tapered off lately and he was thoroughly outplayed tonight.

Check the stats as BB is actually playing better in his last 10 games than his season averages – last 10 gms vs season = 14.2/7.1 vs 12.6/6.2 (shooting .532 vs .485) -

That said the 17 offensive rebs we gave up tonight almost cost us the game. Why is it so hard to rebound when on defense??? Not impressed by much tonight but AB and PP played well (BB- 21 pts) and my man EM got in and once again showed he deserves minutes that KD is wasting. and his defense was just fine. Go Cs…rest up!

At James: Moore came into a close game in the second half and played with total confidence, knocking down a couple of jumpers. I love this guy, the way he handles the ball, and yeah, his D was fine. The lack of rebounding made my blood pressure skyrocket, but at least they pulled it out. It shouldn’t have been as hard as it was, thanks to the lack of rebounding and second chance points by the Magic (no excuse with Howard out of the game).

I’m starting to worry that Ray won’t be in the playoffs. If he’s not 100 percent, it will adversely affect his shot if he plays hurt. And now this thing with Rondo is also very scary, since the C’s never tell the truth re: injuries.
Let’s hope they can get everyone healthy before the playoffs. And show the guys some tapes on how to box out your man and REBOUND

It’s a shame that you remain unwilling to give any props to Davis. I repeat what I’ve said before: the Celtics clearly missed the boat by not attempting to work with Davis’ obvious interest in and gift for post play.
For my part, I will give props to Pierce, a player I have often maligned, rightly so, I think. His play the last two games was transcendant, and last night especially.
Take notes, Rajon. You must keep working on your scoring . A facilitator who can score consistently is twice the facilitator.
