Celtics 90, Hawks 84: All wins count the same, thankfully

I’m still not sure exactly how an 11-point lead dissolved into a tie game in less than three milliseconds, but only a cruel god would have subjected us to five extra minutes of that sludge. Thankfully, the Celtics prevailed in overtime against an Atlanta Hawks team that brought a lot of effort if not a lot of talented players healthy enough to compete.
For all the interesting side notes this game gifted us (T-Mac’s first-half revival, an Erick Dampier sighting, multiple “Erick Dampier still has hands made of brick” reminders, Avery Bradley’s block on Joe Johnson to end the second quarter, Ray Allen’s impressive return to the parquet, a fun stretch where Brandon Bass was the only big man on the court, Rajon Rondo’s “I can still do this on my worst day” triple-double), I feel like somebody just put out a cigarette on my retinas.
The Celtics are lucky there are no Russian judges sitting courtside to detract points for style (or, in this case, utter lack thereof). Boston made a habit of winning ugly games this season, but very few of them were that ugly.
I would feel a lot better about Boston’s win if A) Bradley had returned after suffering a shoulder injury or B) the Celtics’ offense had looked anything better than miserable. But the series is now 2-1, which I suppose was the goal tonight regardless of the route taken to achieve it.
As I’m currently at the game, more to come later.
P.S. — I feel like Rondo just played his worst game since the All-Star break, but he came pretty damn close to a 20-15-15 triple-double. Sigh.
P.P.S. — That last play of regulation was the second time (the first being Boston’s overtime win against Atlanta a few weeks ago) the Celtics forced Willie Green to take a shot with the game on the line. I imagine that was their goal.
P.P.P.S. — Kevin Garnett’s putback dunk to pretty much seal this one was pretty awesome, in a “didn’t he do that same thing in Pau Gasol’s mug back in 2008?” type of way.

KG saved the Cs with an offensive rebound! how about that? Otherwise, and other than RR and RA, this type of uninspired effort will not lead to Banner #18. Forget the cigarette in the retina…more like drinking a glass of warm beer full of burnt cigs and then kissing my sister for 40+ mins, as the Cs played good ball for only the first 6 mins of the 4th qtr and then were lucky to not piss away the whole season. I HATE that too typical Celtic effort and it was led by PP and some lame standing around until RR or PP jacked jumpers. Ugly is too kind of word to use for that game. Go Cs…f’in wake up and get it together!

Jay keep us posted on Bradley please…… Hey James, you’re over analyzing the game… The Heat had 39 points a few minutes into the 3rd quarter last night.. It happens in basketball sometimes. The important thing is to win those types

No, I agree with James; they came out standing around on offense, a very bad sign, and if Bradley is hurt, we are in trouble. Ray is hopefully okay, but obviously rusty behind the 3 line, and missing 2FTs. We’ll take the win, but they’d better wake up soon. KG saved the day with that dunk. Please Bradley, be okay.

PS, I”ve been ragging on MP for several weeks now, but he played a solid game, hitting two big 3s and playing great D on Johnson. If Bradley is out, he’s going to have to step up big time to fill that space

“I feel like somebody just put out a cigarette on my retinas.?”
Great line. One could tell in the first possession that this was going to be an awful game. I can’t quite believe we won it.
Re. Rondo’s game: I think that it’s an indication of how amazing a player he is that he can play as badly as he did tonight – and it was a pretty ugly game from him – and still have a triple double.

James, that’s some funny stuff by the way. I’ve never been so pissed at the C’s after a win. Doc should’ve called a time out two minutes into this game, telling them to wake up

While it may be funny it actually grossed me out as I wrote it. Much like the game. I was so sure we were going to lose after pecking at the end. KG was awesome and I forgot to mention that beyond his offensive reb, which we should do more of. go Cs…MD should have gotten some minutes tonight and MP was great on defense despite the cheap non-fouls he was called for bailing out the hawks several times. Cs’ nonchalant attitude needs severe adjusting before Sunday and the next series.

Was at the movies watchin The Avengers…and by the way you guy described this game, it sounds like I watched something WAY more entertaining. However ugly we were, the only thing we have to worry about is PP getting it going and AB’s health. And we need Pietrus on McGrady…let’s not forget that just a few years ago, he was considered Kobe’s equal. He could very well be an x factor for them.

There was one play I was pissed at and as great as he is, it was a no brainer. Late in the game Rondo held the ball for almost a full 24 seconds and put up a brick. I agree with James, this kind of play from these guys is not enough to win Banner 18 unless they can bring that energy that they had before Ray’s injury. Feels like they have lost a little consistency. They were lucky to escape this game, however they did play well to pull out to that 11 pt lead, only to lose it? Can’t lose the lead in the playoffs, it could cost a title. LET’S GO CELTICS.

And one more bitch: How did Rondo miss so many layups, often bricking off the backboard? In OT, he tripped himself up to miss a layin on the fast break. And Avery missed a wide open dunk in the second half. All of these plays could have prevented OT or nailed the game sooner. Very frustrating; they were out of sync tonight; and yeah, James, I was thinking the same; they should’ve played MD more, also Steimsma.

They match up well with us, all their injuries have created strange line ups we’re not prepared for. Hopefully game 4 we adjust and blow em out. I doubt a blow out but up 3 to 1 will be fine no matter how we got there. You have to win ugly in the playoffs
