Kevin Garnett’s birthday comes with a sour taste

In honor of Kevin Garnett’s 36th birthday, I just head-butted a basket stanchion and unleashed a 45-second monologue of nothing but four-letter words, and I will heretofore act half my age while pretending that last night’s thorough collapse never happened (at least once this post is published, or until referencing the collapse again makes sense, probably while slamming my head repeatedly against my desk). For my gift to Garnett, I will never again call him old. Even though he is.
Garnett will wake up this morning, slap himself in the head a few times, listen to the happy birthday voicemail he received promptly at midnight from Charlie Villanueva, wipe away nightmares of Thad Young running wild through the Philadelphia night, eat a crowbar for breakfast, drink a double dosage of the Elixir of Life from his hip flask, look in the mirror and remind himself, “You’s an ill dude.” To celebrate the occasion, he’ll probably take an ice bath and head over to the gym to shoot 500 midrange jump shots.
The Celtics gave one away last night. You know this, I know this, Garnett knows this, the lunch lady in the cafeteria serving sloppy joes knows this. At halftime last night the Sixers were doing their best to simulate what would happen if a team started five Ben Wallaces. The crowd released a string of boos to reward such a miserable effort, but Boston led by just 15 points at halftime when the advantage should have been 30.
The Sixers seized the game with a late run, but the Celtics really should have stomped them out in the first half when they had the opportunity. One reason for the Celtics’ inability to put Philly away in the opening 24 minutes even when the Sixers had “please, end our misery” tattooed across their foreheads was an old issue: Boston cannot score efficiently with any consistency. After erupting for 12 points in the first 2:33, the Celtics scored just 12 more over the next 13 minutes. Another reason included “THREE OF THE FOUR RESERVES IN WHOM DOC RIVERS RELIES ARE RYAN HOLLINS, KEYON DOOLING AND THE INCREDIBLY STREAKY MICKAEL PIETRUS.”
What went wrong in the ensuing half? As Doc Rivers said, according to ESPN Boston, “Everything we did was the prescription that you don’t do to beat them. [A] 17-5 [edge] on offensive rebounds, 17 turnovers, 36 free throws — you would have thought we were down the whole game if you looked at those numbers.” Rivers also explained, “”We did more than settle; we lost our composure. We stopped running our stuff. Whenever that happens, I always think that’s me. I think that there is something the coach can do to slow them down, to get them back in their sets, to get them back in their rhythm, and I couldn’t do it. To me, I always think that’s my fault.”
An old, wise team played the part of discombobulated young whippersnappers for the second time in four games. The famed Celtics defense broke down to allow several wide open dunks. Dribble penetration came easily for Philadelphia, and help never arrived. The below-average Celtics offense was just that. Rebounds were ignored, cutters ran freely without any opposition, and my memory keeps reminding me that Ray Allen had very little chance of staying in front of anybody he defended.
And yes, Garnett was not good. He still rebounded better than any of his teammates and defended like the pick-and-roll-stifling prototype he is, but Garnett fell back to Earth yesterday — and he landed with a thud, with Lavoy Allen and Doug Collins standing over him baring their teeth. Despite getting a number of makeable shots, Garnett finished 3 of 12 from the field for just nine points. He committed seven turnovers, many of which resembled the time Tony from “Blue Chips” threw a game while playing for Western University and coach Pete Bell.
The Celtics are not going to win games because of their depth. Allen is struggling with his movement and struggling to hit shots (after last night’s 1 for 4, he’s now just 9 for 31 from the arc for the postseason). Hollins is shooting 7 for 21 (33.3%) in 114 playoff minutes, with just 18 points and 15 rebounds. He sometimes makes great defensive plays, but he also might launch a turnaround fadeaway airball from 14 feet. Pietrus could hit his next five shots or miss his next 45. Keyon Dooling hasn’t provided much besides pressure defense and a bunch of great locker room quotes.
With so much going wrong with the second unit, the Celtics have been overly reliant on Garnett to win games. His absurd plus-minus stats in the playoffs (the Celtics were 56 points per 100 possessions better with Garnett on the court entering yesterday’s game) paint the picture. Yesterday, Garnett was not the wrecking ball he had been. It wasn’t the only reason for the loss, but it was one of the important ones.
Happy birthday, Big Ticket. Here’s to hoping your first performance as a 36-year old bests your final at age 35.

Look at the first quarter. You will see that Rondo was not aggressive, not attacking the basket. He WAS actually aggressive on the defensive end, but not on the offensive end. We ran nice patterns in the first quarter, to our credit, but we were doing a lot of masturbatory dribbling at the top of the arc, while waiting for plays to develop, and then settling for weak Js, that we happened to be hitting at first.
WE NEED TO ATTACK THE BASKET. AND IT NEEDS TO START WITH RONDO. EACH AND EVERY GAME.
But whatever. Why do I bother. You guys are soooo right. We don’t have a great young player just coming into his prime on our team. Nope. It’s still 2008. Just keep chanting to youselves, it’s still 2008. Rondo is a punk, not our best player. We shouldn’t get Rondo going. We should get everyone else going. It’s still 2008. It’s still 2008.

Hey paul…who the F**k is ripping on RR??? You better go back and read the last month of post comments as 99% of the people here praise RR all the time, except when he goes off his typical playing effort. I think you’re reading other blogs and confusing your comments when you post inane RR bashings that just aren’t happening in C-Town. Thanks for taking away the good feelings I had as I was about to give KG a shout out. This post is about KG not RONDO. RR’s name isn’t even mentioned and he was pretty damn good last night with 15/13? are you debating yourself??? Come-on please read before bashing unnecessarily. Go Cs…

Paul, nobody is arguing that Rondo needs to lead the charge for the C’s to win. The bench is what concerns me, as Jay notes in this article. When Dooling, Pietrus and Hollins take the court, I can feel my blood pressure rising in fear. Where is STEIMSMA? Is Doc playing mind games with this young man, or is his foot too injured to play? We could use his presence down low right now

Happy Birthday KG! I’m sure you’re in a funk today considering last night’s debacle and your less than stellar shooting and 7 TOs, but I am so thankful you are a Celtic and will someday have your jersey hanging with the Celtic greats. God Bless you for coming to our Boston Celtics! Absolutely love his demeanor, focus, fire, passion, effort, leadership, mentoring, and that he has a 2008 ring forever more. Go Cs…better start playing with effort like your leader, KG!

James, ditto. James, are you worried we’re going to drop this series, i.e. Sonics V. Denver back in 94? Or I am worrying unnecessarily? This game 5 could be the season. That’s a lot of pressure on the C’s, while Philly can be loose and gamble and it seems they are getting the calls and bounces (especially when the C’s allow a game to be close in the final Q that shouldn’t be close). C’s are being outcoached as well. Dooling is Rivers’ pal and getting undeserved minutes. Steimsma being punished. And yeah, Danielle, from your other posts, I’d like to see Williams, but is he even on the playoff roster??

I am not worried in the least. If they lose then it’s on them and Doc for not using the youngsters on the bench like EM who I am sure could handle playing with the younger, quicker 76ers. I just wish we had ended it last night as they should have so they could rest their injuries. Now they have to chance more injury to get through to the next round. The fewer games you can play the better. They’ll be fine. You know they are pissed and that always helps them focus. Go Cs…

If only KG had starte his career in Boston. That would have been epic. Thank God for KG because we probably wouldn’t even be out of the first round (if in the playoffs at all) without him. It’s amazing how selfless he is, especially considering he is probably the most accomplished player on the floor on most nights. And to Chris H: No I’m not suggesting that it’s all over, but I gotta admit that last night’s whole shindig was staggering. That’s the second worst playoff collapse I’ve seen in a long time (The grizzlies had an even worse collapse earlier this postseason) and the C’s had better start to capitalize on the 3rd quarter if they want to be comfortable in the 4th. I would much rather get out scored in the 2nd than the 3rd. And I don’t understand Paul’s obsession with defending Rondo’s name. It’s almost like Batman with Gotham City. And I agree with Danielle with the idea of bringing in Sean Williams. You think Popovich would be riding our seniors the way Doc is? I LOVE Doc, but he doesn’t utilize his whole roster.

Greg, on that note of blowing leads, the Clippers just blew a 24 point lead to go down 7. But the C’s aren’t exactly playing the Spurs; they were playing a team that couldn’t do anything right, and we still gave them the game. Disgusting. And I think we are all worried and uncertain about a series that should’ve been done with in five games.

Let’s hope the C;s bounce back as they have all year long after looking done.

But from years of watching basketball, to blow a big lead in a series game often comes back to haunt teams. Grizzlies in the last round is a perfect example.

Look, better teams have blown games and won series. Stop the fret and semi-panic. We’ll be fine. They are going to come out and be intense and never let up on Monday and then again when in Philly. Go Cs…

I hope so man. Maybe Doc might play GS this game? I really think they lost the game because of tired legs. I mean for f–k sake, KG, PP, RR played over 40 minutes and RA played 31. Why as a coach would you run your starting five into the ground like that? If the C’s come up short this year, don’t blame the players, blame the coach. He has a full bench of healthy players and who do we see? MP, RH and KD, THAT’S IT. That is so unfair to the other guys who don’t get ANY minutes. Again, if the C’s falter blame none other than Doc Rivers. I’m kinda pissed at that guy. You would think he’s runnin a training camp for under-16′s or somethin when the guys he has on the bench are grown men and more than capable of giving productive minutes. I would understand this if he didn’t play his guys once in a while but it’s night in and night out he refuses to give them a run.

I agree re Doc and his ‘rotations’. Why not at least use MD? He can defend pretty damn good and knows how to score and not screw up. I think GS is injured and can’t do what we all want him to do. His jumper would be very valuable now but his injury has him looking weak when he’s in any game. Lastly, I think using EM vs Philly’s young guns would be a good thing but Doc doesn’t have the cojones to use him. Go Cs…

James, I hope you are right. This Philly team scares me though; they never give up and they are fast and youthful and pesty and the Cs can’t get it in their heads that they have to play 48 mins against these guys. We’ll never see Moore, though it’s a nice thought.

Your memory isn’t that good. Go and watch the second half again. Ray is playing great defence on Iguodala. (Accept, perhaps, that step back jumper, late in de game.

PP was on him and left him 6′-10′ of space, by ‘cheating’ to help instead of focusing on denying his man the ball, before he hit the 3 that made it a 5 pt game and a loss. Go Cs…

Didn’t mean the 3. I meant the step back jumper a minute before that. Ray defended Andre almost al of the second half. Probably because of Pauls faul trouble.
