Kevin Garnett targeted by San Antonio Spurs, according to report

We’ve heard that Tim Duncan hates Kevin Garnett. We also know that all of Garnett’s teammates love him — so if he were to join the San Antonio Spurs like they reportedly want, he and Duncan would quickly put their differences aside and become the best Old Men River tag team in NBA history. After all, they’re the same person, just wrapped in completely different packaging. (Express-News)

The Spurs will consider everything and everyone this summer when free agency begins. But one option tossed out this weekend by one in the Spurs organization is not just another name.

Kevin Garnett. …

Some will have more money to offer than the Spurs will. Some might have more young talent to put around him. All the Spurs could give Garnett is the closest thing to what he had in Boston, a veteran core with a chance to contend.

But it’s the pairing of Garnett with Duncan that would make this free-agency signing a stunning story. While they would fit together on the court, they never have as people. They are similar in size, ability and birth (one month apart), yet have been opposites.

Though every team in the NBA will want him this summer, I don’t think Garnett will play anywhere except Boston. I do think he’ll strongly consider retirement. But if the Big Ticket does leave New England to consider his NBA carer, the Spurs might be one of the few teams with a chance of luring him. They have a system and they play selflessly. They have a coach like Doc Rivers who loves his players and vice versa (Gregg Popovich). They are much like the Celtics, except they have a talented, youthful supporting cast which might extend their window of opportunity another couple seasons — especially if they can convince Garnett to sign there this summer.

If Garnett leaves I will write a tear-stained diary entry filled with four-letter words, mostly as an ode to him. But I’d want him to be happy. And in San Antonio, he could be happy.

Damn it, I hate the summer of uncertainty already.

“they have a talented, youthful supporting cast”
i.e. what prevented the Cs to compete this year.
Jonhson and Moore whould have had much more playing time with Popovich, and eventually be rady come playoff time.
just think about the impact Levoy Allen had for the 76ers

If Boston never wins a title in the rest of the Big 3′s playing career, I’d be more than happy to see them play out their days in Boston. They are STILL a great team and maybe need a couple more pieces to get over the top. Not every team can come and kick the door in 1st year and win a title like they did.
