Boston Celtics ‘considering a strong offer’ to Omer Asik, according to report
Take this rumor with a grain of salt, since Sam Smith can be the type of reporter who creates rumors of UFOs flying over the United Center and Martians walking across the Staples Center court: The Boston Celtics are “considering a strong offer” to Omer Asik, the 7-foot-0, 255-pound Chicago Bulls center.
The Celtics are one the teams said to be considering a strong offer to Bulls center Asik. The thinking is it might help them retain Kevin Garnett, who though playing very well at center the second half of the season doesn’t want to return as a center.
The second sentence might give you a clue as to how fabricated Smith’s reports sometimes seem to be. It’s as if Kevin Garnett’s retirement decision hinges on whether the Celtics acquire a backup center who averaged 3.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in just 14.7 minutes per game last season. That barely makes more sense than the boy who once told me, “The Celtics’ blue uniforms look really sweet tonight.”
I really like Asik. He’s a legitimate, physical, defensive-minded center with a rebound rate significantly better than Garnett’s. But he’s a restricted free agent, and the Bulls probably won’t part with him unless another team overpays for his services. Like with most free agents, it all depends on the deal.
P.S. — Just throwing this out there, but: Ray Allen for Asik in a sign-and-trade?

Pass. Lame and dumb rumor especially considering Spencer Hawes is an unrestricted FA and has 3X the stats of this stiff and knows how to play good defense, can rebound well, and has a nice perimeter game and can run the floor aggressively.

Jay…why not make a name for yourself and ‘leak’ a rumor that the Cs are “interested in Spencer Hawes” and when we sign him you can take the credit? At least it would be a signing that makes more sense than Asik and it’s a better and more intelligent ‘rumor’. Go Cs…the nonsensical rumor season is well underway!

We can do a whole helluva better than Asik if we’re giving up RA in a sign and trade. Go Cs…

Dont throw Sam Smith under the bus, you are the joke of all this. Ray Allen for Asik? are you nuts? The Bulls would not do that in 100 years. so I would believe any report from Sam Smith then some “sports writer” who would even throw a trade like that out.

Let’s not spend any significant money on anyone we aren’t darned sure we really want to keep around, and NO MORE KG CAP KILLER CONTRACTS EVER.

You got a problem with KG’s contract??? He certainly deserved it and more importantly…EARNED it. I think he should only get half now, or $20MM for 2 yrs, but at the time his deal was fair and we had 5 legitimate Finals opps that were sidelined by injuries and Laker refs. I do agree we need to not throw money around unjustifiably, but if a player of KG, PP, or RA’s skills and bona fide talent is available in the future then paying for them is the right thing to do. Go Cs…

Yeah, don’t see KG coming back for a 3rd-string Center. Sign and Trade Ray Ray for Josh Smith and bring bak Jeff Green or trade him for Michael Beasley.

3rd string Center? Are you high dude? Asik is a better Center than ANY center we had in our roster last season (I’m not talkin about KG). He is a beast defensively and on the boards. BEAST. Also he dominate finishing alley oops playin with rondo. I’m not sayin I’d be up for a RA for Asik S&T but he would be a very nice addition to our frontline.

Definitely, Hibbert is who we should be lookin at. Who knows what Ainge has up his sleeve. Maybe he can pull 2 or 3 big names this season and keep the Big 4. Here’s hoping.
