Mike Gorman believes Paul Pierce will forever remain a Boston Celtic

Gorman also said that everything he's heard from C's ownership and management that Paul Pierce is going nowhere and will retire as a Celtic

Mike Gorman appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub this morning and said he believes the Boston Celtics want Paul Pierce to remain a Celtic until the day he decides to retire. (Listen to the full audio here)

“Everything I’ve heard from Celtic coaching staff and Celtic ownership — they really want to see Paul Pierce play his entire career as a Celtic. I get no indication the Celtics have shopped Paul seriously. Danny will talk about it, and that’s kind of his job as the guy who runs basketball operations,” Gorman said.

My roommate and I had an argument the other night about the Paul Pierce dilemma. If the Celtics trade Pierce now, with two seasons remaining on his contract, they can compile further assets to rebuild around Rajon Rondo. If the Celtics keep Pierce, he can retire as a Celtic, an honor he has probably earned by playing his entire career to date in Boston and becoming the second-leading scorer in franchise history.

“You’re buggin’,” my roommate told me. “They need to ship his ass away. Did you see him struggling in the playoffs? You don’t want to pay him $15 million when he’s 36 years old. Trade him now while his stock’s still high and get something in return.”

“But why? So they can earn the 6th or 7th seed in next year’s playoffs and speed up the rebuilding process by a year or two? Is that worth shipping away the greatest Celtic of our generation, a guy who became a man in Boston, who went through some rough times early but now typifies everything we want from a Celtic?”

“He just shot 38.6 percent in the playoffs. He got torched by LeBron James. The 2011-12 season was his most up-and-down yet. And he’s on the books for $33 million over the next two seasons. I know the Celtics defied expectations this season, but they aren’t contending for a title next year. So why not trade Pierce for young talent and/or draft picks?”

“Because loyalty matters. Because I wouldn’t want that scraggly facial hair representing any other team. Because it’s incredibly rare these days for players to spend their entire careers in one place, and Pierce has a chance to do that. Because if I ever saw him hitting a game-winning stepback jumper in another jersey, I might run straight into oncoming traffic. Because $33 million isn’t a lot to spend for a player who was Boston’s one shining light during the franchise’s roughest years, who redefined himself later in his career to better accentuate Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, who was the 2008 Finals MVP and has hit so many big goddamn shots in his career. What would people have thought if Red Auerbach had traded John Havlicek to the New York Knicks? If Larry Bird had been traded later in his career? Some guys should forever be untradeable, regardless of how dealing them might help a team, because of everything they’ve accomplished. Pierce has joined thatĀ rarefiedĀ air.”

“But the Celtics could probably help themselves by trading him.”

“It doesn’t matter. Some things are more important than wins.”

“Not in Boston.”

“Especially in Boston.”

Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.

Loyalty is a two way street, or it’s nothing. I’ve criticized Ainge for not showing loyalty, and now the players deserve the same criticism. They are showing no loyalty, so they deserve none.

It’s a two way street, both ways, or its nothing.

PP will retire a Celtic. His knee was obviously bothering him during the playoffs. If RA is let go, which would be a dumb mistake, and PP’s production starts to fall off more then make PP the 6th man. He deserves to retire a Celtic based on all the years he gave to the ‘bad’ Celtics (prior to KG showing up). Go Cs…9 more days of waiting until the draft and getting this team put together.

July 1st is the start of free agency and then there’s a 10 day moratorium until actual signings can happen (July 11th). Trades can happen anytime leading to the draft June 28th. Can’t wait to package our picks and move up! Go Cs…

You trade PP and you turn the team into a bunch of selfish mercenaries. How can you expect remaining players to play team first basketball when the captain is traded. The Celtics team concept will end with the trading of PP.

I have been a Celtic for only 5 years now. I came in the trade the brought KG. Sometimes as an outsider as someone that does not have th luxury to go to games or even live in Boston, someone can see or feel things stronlgy, I guess. When free agency comes I read and watch journalysts and bloggers saying that players want to go to LA, to live like a star,to have his own reality show. To Miami to leave close to the beach, to phoenix for the weather. I think Boston sells pasion, tradition, winning enviroment a players coach. Those things should come along loyalty and honesty. Let’s not forget that the Bulls had money for years and no quality free agent would go there beacuse of how they’ve treated Jordan and Pippen. I love the “I am a Celtic” add and all that comes with it. Blue collar city, hard working players, defense, defense. I wish I had personally witnessed that “lets go celtics” chanting in game 6 personally and I certanly will like to remain a long distant part of a team that values all those things and I think this will rub in to players, so that anyone that comes here, no matter if they are 38 or if they’re not as talented(like Perk is). They will come and give 100% out of being a Celtic.

I agree with you and the “chanting” of “Let’s Go Celtics” in game 6 epitomizes the great respect this city has for this storied franchise. I remember watching Cowens, Jojo White, and Hondo at the Boston Garden and the Celtics have the biggest hearts of any team I have ever seen. Pierce should and will remain a Celtic till the end of his playing days…he is the TRUTH.

The slogan says it all “I am a Celtic”. Defense = team first approach = loyalty which results in wins and ultimately, a dynasty that embodies the phrase “I am a Celtic”. Without loyalty, it all falls apart and we become a selfish self centered team (Heat?). If winning really is more important than loyalty to real C’s fans, then why did they cheer for 3 minutes for a game/team that was already lost. Because loyalty and unselfishness is the key ingredient to it all. I hope they sell tickets to Pierce’s retirement party at the Garden….just like Larry.

Paul Pierce will ALWAYS be a Celtic. He is everything the Celtics have stood for years and years. I have been a Celts fan for 57 years – have been to the old Boston Garden – was at Reggiton…there is no way e Lewis’ funeral in BosPierce should be sent anywhere. He has paid his dues and earned the privilege of retiring a Celtic.
