Celtics interested in trading for Josh Smith, according to report

Josh Smith jumps like gravity barely exists, shoots like coaching barely exists, and is one of the NBA’s finest two-way talents. He’s also, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, a potential trade target of the Boston Celtics.

Stein cautions that Danny Ferry, Atlanta’s new general manager, isn’t in any hurry to move Smith and isn’t likely to pull the trigger on any blockbuster deals any time soon. But still, Josh Smith.

Depending on what the Celtics would need to surrender to secure his services, Smith could be a good pickup. He’s only signed for one more year at $13.2 million, so he could potentially be a talented, one-year fill-in between whatever the Celtics are next season (your guess is as good as mine) and whatever they’ll one day become (with the possibility of re-signing him later, of course). Smith is a lot of things, not all of them good, but a frontcourt consisting of him and Kevin Garnett is intriguing, to say the least.

For better and for worse, I’m as intrigued by Smith’s talent as I am confounded by his shot selection. One second he’s a 6-foot-9 inch ballerina gliding across the hardwood and the next he’s a blindfolded muskrat slinging three-pointers that have little chance of going on. He’d help the Celtics most of the time and hurt them on occasion.

It all depends on the price.

UPDATE: According to A. Sherrod Blakely, any Smith deal would likely include a sign-and-trade for Brandon Bass.

I personally think Josh Smith would help the C’s. I think he gets a bad rep. because he has never had a great coach that has instilled a good work ethic (team player, good shot selection, etc.). I think a season with Doc could really help him. The only question would be what would be need to give up for him?

If we could get JSmoove without surrendering Rondo, Bradley and one of our two firsts it would be awesome. With the pick we should draft a big man.
