Brandon Bass contract likely worth $20 million over 3 years, according to report

Though the terms of Brandon Bass’ contract still haven’t been disclosed (or even finalized, for that matter), the power forward will reportedly make $20 million over three years. (CSNNE)

His agent Tony Dutt told CSNNE.com that the particulars are still being ironed out, but “we’ve essentially got a deal.”

Although Dutt wouldn’t divulge the particulars, it is expected to be a three-year deal worth around $20 million – comparable to the four-year, $26 million deal Glen Davis received last summer from the Orlando Magic.

Big Baby money is fair for Bass (though maybe not fair for Big Baby). But the Celtics are moving dangerously close to the salary cap apron of $74 million, which acts as a de facto hard cap for them since they’ve already offered the full mid-level exception to Jason Terry.

Based on my (potentially-slightly-wrong) calculations, the Celtics now have $58 million committed to 10 players (including rookie Kris Joseph, who may or may not have a guaranteed contract), with a hard salary cap of approximately $74 million because they’ve already committed the full mid-level exception to Jason Terry. That means the Celtics should have approximately $16 million to spend. If one of those available spots is used on Ray Allen, he’ll reportedly make $6 million.  That would leave $10 million to pay Jeff Green (who reportedly wants $9 million) and fill out the rest of the roster (the Celtics also have Bird rights on Nenad Krstic and they have extended a qualifying offer to Greg Stiemsma, not to mention other free agents like Mickael Pietrus, Chris Wilcox, Marquis Daniels and Sasha Pavlovic, and E’Twaun Moore and Sean Williams, whose 2012-13 contracts are both non-guaranteed).

Stiemsma’s looking like he might be a forced casualty if the Celtics come to terms with Allen (who reportedly only has one outside option left, the Miami Heat). The Celtics may have to go bargain hunting for a backup big man.

The math is hard to figure sometimes. After all, KG gave up a huge chunk of money. If Ray comes back, he’ll be giving up a lot. Pierce’s contract went up some, I think, and the cap reduction probably took some, but how do we end up barely able to fill out our roster? Not having Dooling is going to hurt us. Dooling played a HUGE role as Rondo’s mentor. Pietrus. Wilcox. These guys brought a lot of energy and spirit.

One solution might be to renegotiate with Pierce. Let’s bring him down to 11 million and give him more years. That would help him too, because the team would be better, and he’d have less load to carry.

Because Danny has to stay under the tax line in order to use the 5mil on Terry.

That 74mil adds up quick, they already had 30mil committed at year starts just with Rondo, Pierce, Bradley, Johnson. Now add KG, Bass, Ray, Green. See how quickly it disappears?

The salaries came down also because we were paying Rasheed $7M last yr, Shaq $1.4M, and JO $6M and those are all off the books now. Taking KG from $20MM to $!!MM or so saved us and there’s still plenty to sign MP, GS, EM, WC and even KD if RA comes back. If RA books to Miami, which I just can’t fathom, then we lose that exception and his Bird rights and that only gives us a smaller MLE and the every other year exception ($4MM) which we can use to cover those remaining players and maybe bring in a smaller FA (the RA amount left over if he leaves, etc.). Hope that clears it up a bit and is not too confusing. Go Cs…bottom line is we are BETTER!!! Come home, RA!!!
