Boston Celtics Blow Out Magic to Conclude Orlando Summer League; E’Twaun Moore, Kris Joseph Injured

The Boston Celtics cruised to a 94-73 victory over the Orlando Magic to conclude their stay in the Orlando Pro Summer League Friday morning. With Jared Sullinger given the day off to rest, Dionte Christmas exploded for 19 points in the first half, while E’Twaun Moore impressed once again, chipping in 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

According to A. Sherrod Blakely, however, Moore and rookie Kris Joseph suffered hip flexor injuries during the game. Joseph started, but did not play in the final three quarters of the game. He played only eight minutes, missing all three of his shots, including an airball and an ugly turnover, in his first pedestrian effort of the summer. Via Blakely:

#CelticsTalk: #Celtics E. Moore and K. Joseph have hip flexor injuries. Neither deemed serious enough for either to miss action in Vegas.

The Celtics will now travel to Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League, where they open play Monday against the Atlanta Hawks. Here are some observations from Friday’s game:

  • Fab Melo recorded 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of play. In his final season at Syracuse, he reached double figures in rebounds ONCE. Melo has exceeded my meager expectations with his play thus far, though it’s clear he still has a long way to go to become a viable NBA player. In the first half, Melo attempted an 18-footer  which nearly killed a baby in the first row (or so it seemed). In the fourth quarter, Melo posted up along the baseline and, after a spin move, shot the ball off the side of the backboard. Melo did keep after the play and end up scoring on a nice move into the middle of the lane, but both plays showed how raw he is offensively.
  • E’Twaun Moore continued his strong campaign for a spot on the Celtics Opening Day roster. Danny Ainge has until the end of summer league to decide whether or not to guarantee the second year of Moore’s rookie deal. What has been most impressive about Moore is his patience, his calm on the offensive end. Moore is still learning how to play the point guard position, yet he always plays at his own pace, never rushes to his spots on the floor. For instance, in the first half, Moore attacked the defense in transition on a 3-on-2 fast break, driving into the defense just deep enough so they collapsed on him as he passed out to Christmas for a wide open three-pointer. Moore’s pace of play– not his skill level, let me be clear– reminds me of Sam Cassell. He is confident in his outside shooting and works to get to his hot spots.
  • Aside from a thunderous put-back dunk late in the contest, Sean Williams didn’t do much to convince Ainge to guarantee HIS roster spot. Williams played 21 minutes, but recorded just six points and four rebounds in an underwhelming performance. Williams’ athleticism is undeniable, but the more I watch him play, the more it seems it’s his only redeeming attribute.

In SU’s zone system all players went to the boards all the time and with fouls limiting Melo’s time a lot he never had the chance to have a lot of dbl rebounding games due to minutes played (they also used Rakeem Christmas at center). Melo is a huge body that can move and under KG’s tutelage he will flourish and be starting in 2 yrs. Go Cs…

So I don’t understand…would Lee be the backup PG? And Terry would be the backup SG? That makes sense. But is Lee a true PG who can orchestrate an offense? And I agree with another poster, why Ian Ainge going after Wilcox??? We need big men. Rookie big men simply aren’t enough. We aren’t a team or a culture that likes to look in the future. We need people who can produce now and big men are more important to us because that’s a weakness. We have plenty of guards already. And I LOVE pietrus, but listen we have Jeff Green who can do all the things Pieteus can do and more. Remember, Pietrus was only brought in because of Green’s heart ailment.

I’m not convinced JG can defend or rebound as well as MP (and he certainly can’t shoot the 3 as well) even though MP did not have great rebounding numbers due to Doc’s philosophy of not sending anyone to rebound. EVER. Go Cs…

Where’s your same “understanding” with Green? You can’t seriously sit there and say that Mp is on the same level as JG. MP is a great defender and slasher (when he wants to which is never) but he averages 3 points James. We need points on the board. JG averages 15. Enough said. And yes JG can defend better and rebound better than Mp because of his size. What about the lack of importance Ainge is putting on big men?

I just think JG has under-performed to this point and until he plays in our system and averages 15 pts (he averaged 9.8 pts and 3.3 rebs in 22 mins with Cs) then I hold reservations. Certainly, the potential is there. MP and JG played about the same mins and MP had 6.9 pts and 3.1 rebs and shot a little worse overall due to taking so many 3s vs JG not shooting the 3 primarily. So with MP further from the hoop because he camped at the 3 line his rebounding is actually better in my mind as he has further to go to engage in that activity. I think MP is a better defender so let’s keep both and use MP as a SG, too, which gives problems to other teams. Go Cs…

Well I’d agree with you regarding JG’ underperforming. I’m glad you don’t think that Perk is a more valuable plate than him too. But I think PP will bring out the best in Jg because of how hard PP goes in in practice. Plus Green has a LOT to prove to C fans because of the contract as well as the trade itself. We will see way Ainge does, but I’d still take Wilcox over Pietrus.

I HATE Perk…glad he’s gone and can’t say it enough. I like CW too and it looks like he’s onboard. JG has a great opportunity to play flat out ball this season and I think he’ll be a lot better than he was. he was just too timid at times deferring to the starters, etc. He’s a C for 4 years so let’s hope he takes advantage of the blessings he has received, including his life and the fat contract. Go Cs…
