Dionte Christmas remains with Boston Celtics in Vegas Summer League

Though he originally planned to join the Houston Rockets in the Las Vegas Summer League, Dionte Christmas decided not to interrupt a good thing and will remain with the Boston Celtics for the second straight week. He has not yet chosen to attend Celtics training camp, and reportedly would like “some sort of financial offer” before he commits to doing so. (Boston Herald)

“Originally I was supposed to go to summer league here with Houston, but I like the situation here,” said Christmas, who stood out last week. “I didn’t make an actual commitment to Houston; I just told them it was up in the air. When I found out Boston was going to both, I felt it was just a great situation for me, so I figured I’d go to both Orlando and Vegas with them.”

The 6-foot-5 guard from Temple is not locked into the regular Celtics training camp, but he’d like to play his way into some sort of financial offer from the club to get him there.

“As of right now, they’re still having conversations with my agent,” he said. “Hopefully they’re good conversations, and hopefully I can get an invite or a little more than that. They said they’re going to keep in touch with my agent, and hopefully they can get some things together.”

I still don’t think Boston is the right place for Christmas to attend training camp. The Celtics already have a deep back court with Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley and Jason Terry, and they’re desperately trying to add Courtney Lee or O.J. Mayo. The Celtics also have E’Twaun Moore. He hasn’t drastically outperformed Christmas so far during summer league but does hold two clear advantages over the former Temple guard, who might be Moore’s competition for one of Boston’s final roster spots:

1) Moore spent last season with the Celtics, so he knows the plays and has a rapport with Doc Rivers already.

2) Moore has demonstrated the ability to play both guard spots, which Christmas has yet to do.

Christmas was a pleasant surprise in Orlando. He helped out in more ways than a butler, scoring, rebounding, defending and generally working harder than the horses in Charleston, South Carolina that pull large packs of tourists throughout the city. The situation with the Summer Celtics obviously suits Christmas, or else he wouldn’t have spurned the Rockets in Vegas. But if he desperately wants to stick in the NBA, he should consider attending a different team’s training camp. The Celtics just don’t have much opportunity.

it’s always wise to have a “plan B” in case creative talks to land either Mayo or Lee do not materialize.
how much is it a non-guaranteed contract? I think it’s worth the risk

I agree but only if we lose out on Lee or Mayo. Our roster is already at 12 with EM, GS, and MP still seeking spots (I assume Joseph is making the team and getting a deal). The problem is we are just too deep and that might negate bringing Christmas in, as it does appear he has talent. Go Cs…get Lee!
