Greg Stiemsma expected to land with Minnesota Timberwolves, according to report

Now that the Portland Trail Blazers will likely match Nicolas Batum’s offer sheet, the Minnesota Timberwolves should have enough money to sign Greg Stiemsma. And the Wolves reportedly believe they will. (ESPN 1050)
The Wolves expect to get restricted free agent center Greg Stiemsma. Boston is over the cap, so the Wolves feel like they will be able to structure the contract in a fashion such that Celtics general manager Danny Ainge won’t be able to match.
If Stiemsma signs an offer sheet with Minnesota that exceeds $1.957 million in the first year (the bi-annual exception), the Celtics will be powerless to match and they will lose the next Bill Russell. I’ll hate to see Stiemsma go (partially because I’ll miss the “Stiemboat” whistle at the TD Garden), but he’s as good as gone and has been for weeks.
Also from the link above, the Timberwolves are expected to show interest in Courtney Lee. David Kahn is doing his best to be a thorn in Danny Ainge’s side, but at least he amnestied Darko Milicic so the Celtics can make a run at him?
Oy vey.

They can believe what they want, but who’s the say Steamer wont take the 1.97 million from Boston over 3million from Minnestota.
Actually, his agent outright said as much, he’s quote saying “If it comes down to the bi-annual from Boston, and maybe a little bit more from another team, I think he stays in Boston.”
Danny is waiting to protect his Bi-annual, because there’s no obligation to offer it until Greg receives an offer. But once he does, Greg has 0 obligation to sign it, and Danny could offer him the Bi-annual right there and he could chose to sign that first.
This isn’t over yet.

Exact quote:
“Just because Greg would get an offer more than the biannual doesn’t mean he would take it,” Naiditch said. “If the Celtics were to offer him the biannual, and he had a choice between the biannual with the Celtics and may a little bit more with another team, I’m quite certain he would still go with the Celtics.”

Yeah, $1.9MM from the Cs is nothing, along with the opportunity to learn from HOF-er to be KG as he has been doing, as opposed to learning from Kevin Love or whoever their center is, and possibly winning a title (certainly going far in the playoffs). Guess he couldn’t parlay that experience into another contract, so I guess you’re right…take the money and go nowhere. Go Cs…

I would hate to lose GS as he has talent and a very bright future, if he continues to work hard (journey man level, etc.). that said, we have Fab and he is already better than GS, except for the jump-shot, and his upside is much better (starting center, etc.). He would learn more in Boston but $$$ for a young player and more playing time (starter?) will be key vs chance to win a title. Same scenario goes for Lee’s decision. Lastly, Darko is worthless and is not an option or even worth a passing thought. I’d rather have EM, MP and MD back if GS and Lee are not signing on. Go Cs…get Lee!

Doesn’t the agent say this just to drive up the price?
It has the effect of Woodson (presumably without thinking it through) saying they’d match Lin’s offer sheet — Houston immediately ups their offer.
