The Boston Celtics have signed Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith, two guards who will attend training camp with hopes of making the opening day roster.

Christmas told ESPN Boston’s Greg Payne his contract will be partially guaranteed.

Full details of the deal are not known, but Christmas said following the Celtics’ 92-77 summer league loss to the Los Angeles Clippers that the contract will be partially guaranteed. He’ll go to training camp with the Celtics in September looking to lock down a roster spot.

“I actually got the call before the game started,” Christmas said. “I don’t really know all the details now, but I’m going to go over them with the staff. But I’m just happy, man, emotional. I actually got the call literally two minutes before the game started.”

The Courtney Lee trade helped to give Christmas a real opportunity with the Celtics. It opened a couple roster spots and sent away E’Twaun Moore, a similar player who was already in the Celtics system last season and likely would have beaten out Christmas for a roster spot.

Smith hasn’t been as productive as Christmas during summer league, but the 6-foot-3 combo-guard seems to enjoy setting nets on fire. He went scoreless during today’s game but impressed with a quick, accurate trigger for most of Boston’s two weeks of summer league play. The Boston Globe reported that Smith has signed a contract, but did not mention whether it was guaranteed. I would imagine it’s not. He was also a training camp invitee in 2010, but was waived before the regular season.

If I can count accurately, the Celtics’ roster now stands at 15. Danny Ainge’s summer of impressive moves could be over, or perhaps he’ll add another body or two for training camp and make Christmas and Smith sweat out the final cut.

How many guards do we need? 6? Really??? Rondo and Terry run the point and Lee and Bradley run the SG.Period. I don’t understand this move to bring in Smith.

Smith is just for camp and to give him a chance to play and be seen by other teams. Xmas will make the team and I hope we use the last spot for MP. Go Cs…

I’d have to disagree regarding Melo being better than Pierce. Maybe he can score easier than Pierce, but Pierce has been a better teammate and is a much much better defender as is so much better at being a point forward. Pierce also goes hard 110% in practice. Overall, I don’t think Melo is the cinch HOF’er that Pierce is.

I’d MUCH rather have MP on the roster than Smith because we really don’t need all these SG’s on our team. I love having a deep backcourt but being 2 deep at each position is MORE than enough for me.

Celts are now a lot younger a lot more athletic and way better scoring coming off the bench! Great offseason, we needed it!
