Jason Collins signing with Boston Celtics
Sources: Celtics set to ink veteran big man Jason Collins to a one-year, veteran minimum deal. Adds 7-footer to bench.

We now have our answer to the annual question: “Which limited Celtics big man will improbably stumble into playoff minutes because of a troubling string of midseason injuries?”
Jason Collins. He has hands like ping pong paddles, but as far as 15th men go he ain’t bad.

Hes actually not bad defensively, he was very effective against dwight howard in the hawks last playoff series against the magic, and he wasnt too shabby against KG last year either

Definitely wasn’t signed for his offense. Again, I’d rather Fab get minutes to develop and leave Collins for later as we already know what he can do. Go Cs…

With Pierce and KG playing for a last chance opportunity to win the finals you are not going to see players “being developed” if the outcome of the game is not certain. Whoever can make the most positive impact will be on the floor. The age of Pierce and KG will force the Celtics to think short-term. As long as there are healthy bodies, players not ready will have to develop in practice and garbage time.

So playing Joseph, Fab or Christmas (I hope he is signed) in November – March makes no sense? Why must we have the core guys play 40 mins each night, especially against the sub-.500 teams? That’s how we get burned out, used up, and injured. The regular season is for developing your team and if rookies aren’t going to be used then send them to the D-League. We need to play Sullinger, Joseph, Fab and Xmas so they’re ready when we need them or if injuries require us to. just my thought and how I would actually use their youth to help the team. Go Cs…

It would nice if this group could hold on to the lead the starters provide…Doc has tried in the past and he had to put the starters right back in. Should Doc be willing to lose games to develop the rookies. How many?…What about home court advantage? The starters will get more rest even without the rookies playing much because the bench now has more proven players.

I think we’re so much better adding Sullinger, CW, JG, JT, and Lee to our starters compared to our bench last year after the injuries to CW and Judas. We should have no problem getting first qtr leads and then maintaining them. If we’re not 25-5 or so out of the shoots then I’ll be really surprised. Home court advantage is important but we can win without it as shown by last year’s depleted team. I think developing players will happen whether we lose games or not as we need everyone ready for when games matter. Go Cs…

You are so right…been a fan for 50 years and this team and the excitement I have for the upcoming season rivals 2008 when the Big 2 and Judas showed up and when Bird was drafted and obviously before that when Cowens, Jo JO white, and the great russell teams ruled the Finals. Going to be great!!! Go Cs…

How was it to watch Bill Russell play? He seems like such a nice person and is so respected.

Watching Russell was unbelievably fun. I was about 8 and really started watching the Cs as we lived in SF and my father followed Russell and Sam Jones after they left USF. He started me watching his teams (Cs and Syracuse – his college) and I’ve been a fan ever since. Watching the Cs beat the Lakers 6 times in a row over 8 seasons was AWESOME!!! Have hated the Lakers ever since and even more so when we moved to SB and then when I moved down to LA for 13 yrs. You should try and find some tapes of the Finals vs the Lakers between ’61-’62 and the ’68-’69 seasons. and the Knicks with Reed, Frazier and Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe beating the Lakers in ’69-’70 was fantastic, too. I’ve been very lucky as I could have been a Warrior fan instead…thank God my father was a CS fan!!! Go Cs…

Nice. Your dad has saved you from a lifetime of fandom depression. I’ll try to find some tapes because there’s a ton of C’s players from the past that I’ve never seen play before. I mean I’ve heard of the 80′s era but I’d like to see the earlier times. This is what I love about the C’s..you truly get a sense of pride when thinking about the players and teams we’ve had. Hopefully my lifelong fandom will be as bright as yours has so far!! You say you’re a SU fan…what’s your take on Melo (the original one) I think he’s Paul Pierce 2.0 who could prosper into what Pierce has been (on the floor at least) being with a defensive minded player like Tyson Chandler. Obviously Chandler and Garnett are on two different stratospheres, but the impact could be the same.

I love the original Melo and am so happy he brought a title to SU. I was hoping Waiters and Fab would stick another year as I think SU is loaded and capable of another strong run but am stocked KJ and Fab are Celtics. Melo is PP 2.0 but I think he’s even better. I love that he’s a Knick and we get to play him more. Go Cs…
