Larry Legend statue to be built in Indiana, will be bigger than Magic Johnson’s because ‘Larry is just better’
Bill Russell got his after President Obama suggested it and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is getting his after whining about it enough to the media at the All-star game in 2011. Soon, Larry Bird will be the latest basketball player to be honored with a statue.
Bird’s statue was funded by a grassroots organization of people who wanted to honor Bird and his career. While the way each of these former NBA stars obtained their statue is fitting, the best part of this story comes from the sculptor, Bill Wolfe:
Wolfe said Monday that he wanted to be sure that Bird’s statue was taller than any of his longtime basketball nemesis and now friend, Magic Johnson, who played for Michigan State University as well as the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.
“I don’t have anything against Magic,” Wolfe said.
“Larry is just better,” Wolfe and Jack Fox, director of development for the Indiana State University Foundation, said in unison at Wolfe’s studio on Ohio Street in Terre Haute.
Bill Wolfe, although I have never met him, seems to be the perfect person for the job. Great news that the Legend is getting his due.
