Rajon Rondo with greatest Celtic point guard in sights

The point guard has been touring all around Asia during the off-season, giving the farthest outskirts of Celtic Nation some love.  He recently sat down for an interview with Ethan Strauss of the Bleacher Report, which if you have the time, is a great piece considering the usual private nature of RR.  As many do not have the time, here are some of the highlights:

He is not the greatest Celtic point guard yet, but  he is “maybe seven to eight years away from it. I plan on being a Celtic for a long time”.  He went on to say the typical ‘I know it’s a business’ schpeal, but sounds like he loves Boston and would love to have his Jersey hanging in the Garden rafters when it is all said and done.

Rondo spoke a good deal about his love for passing saying, ”Oh, I like throwing a cross-court one-hand bounce-pass between the defense to P (Paul Pierce). I’ll throw a little English on the ball, throw it between two, three guys that are trying to run extremely hard to the paint. Then you got Paul Pierce trailing for the three—and obviously I’m pleased when he makes it”.  Rondo spoke repeatedly about the satisfaction he gets from seeing other people score, speaking specifically about running the pick-and-roll, “It’s not about me getting the shot. If he shows hard, that means I’m doing my job, dragging the big out. That allows the 16-footer”.  He is usually reserved, but I love the way he describes passing the basketball.

Lastly, my favorite random tidbit from the interview: “As I grew up, I played [basketball] in sandals. I played in flip-flops all the time back in the day. That’s why I didn’t really care about spraining my ankles.”

This explains his classic ‘take hard to the hole, fall like a ton of bricks, look injured and make all Celtics fans worry then casually walk it off’ paradigm which Rondo does about once every five games.  I was under the impression that ankles become weaker after sprains.  Just another reason why Rondo is better than most humans.

Is it me or did he give really good answers? He hardly ever gives answers like this, I almost didn’t believe it was him. Great stuff though, it was especially nice reading that he plans on being a Celtic for basically his whole career.

I agree. I think a lot of credit has to go to the interviewer Ethan Strauss. Maybe that and he is learning that he needs to be a bigger media presence now that he is the leader of this team? hopefully both.

refreshing interview with Rondo who is normally a very private person. I was intrigued when I heard about this interview just because he rarely does interviews. Private guy who doesn’t care for the media. Him doing this makes me think he’s maturing and understanding that this media stuff comes with the territory. Maybe he is getting used to it now as the leader of this team. Great job Ethan.

Having watched 50 yrs of Celtics games I am positive RR will achieve his goal and all the former greats would have loved playing with him. Also like the fact he wants to be a Celtic for life! Go Cs…
