Co-host Ty Ray, guest Greg Payne and I began our podcast last night with several pages full of notes, all of which we planned to use throughout the show’s duration.
Instead, Rajon Rondo hijacked the conversation and we spent almost the entire 90 minutes discussing the Boston Celtics’ All-Star point guard. We spoke about his brash comments this offseason, whether he can consistently graduate from “fourth-quarter decoy” into “go-to guy” like he did a few times during the playoffs, and how he played basketball in flip-flops as a child. We debated whether Danny Ainge is surrounding Rondo specifically with players who can help him succeed and we genuflected at Rondo’s basketball genius.
We also engaged in a brief discussion of the best basketball movies ever. With my adrenaline flowing and my mind in serious podcast mode, I slipped up and admitted to a couple embarrassing (yet somewhat awesome) habits: During my youth, I wore my jersey to sleep the night before every season-opening game I played. Laying in bed with my basketball jersey on I would watch Hoosiers, dry heaving without fail when Norman Dale kissed Myra Fleener, exulting whenever Jimmy Chitwood released his perfect shot and choking back tears during the hospital scene with Shooter and his son, Everett. I would fall asleep to dreams of playing like Chitwood but wake up still resembling Ollie. I know, it sucked. Shooting free throws with two hands is for the birds.
Listen to the show. I think we’re starting to get better, even if my microphone didn’t work for the first couple minutes.
