Keyon Dooling waived by Celtics

It pains me to say this, but the entire flexing squad of last year (as pictured above) is no longer with the Celtics with the news that Keyon Dooling was waived by the Celtics today.
First the news via Celtics.com:

“Keyon has decided that he has given the NBA 12 good years and that it’s time to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family,” said Dooling’s representative Kenge Stevenson. “He will never forget his time in Boston with the Celtics.”

“We’ll miss Keyon’s spirit and energy, both on and off the court,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “The whole Celtics family wishes him well as he enters the next phase of his life.”

I don’t know about you, but my mind is going into overdrive with ideas as to what “other interests” refers to.  For me it would mean a heavy dose of basketball triple threat (pick-up, NBA 2k13, and watching the Celtics) and extended nap times.  Who knows, maybe Dooling has similar “interests”.

As to what it means for the Celtics, it means they no longer have a back-up point guard.  The Celtics backcourt depth and how it could be both an advantage and disadvantage has been discussed many times during the dog days of the NBA season.  It could mean that PP might play the facilitator role more often with the second unit, or JET handles the ball as the team sets up the half court offense.  Most likely it means 40 minutes plus for Rondo per night, with it being more clear than ever that this team is on his shoulders.

Whatever Dooling’s “interests” are and however Danny Ainge and Doc plan to organize the Celtics rotation, Keyon Dooling will be missed.  His energy and basketball wits were instrumental for the Celtics, and I wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.

P.S. — I’m sure Dionte Christmas and Kris Joseph liked Dooling and all, but they must be thrilled to see him go. One more roster spot for  which those guys can compete. Assuming the Celtics don’t make any more additions prior to opening day, Christmas and Joseph are the front-runners to be the 14th and 15th men.

I didn’t know, but then Marquis Daniels is gone too? What happened to him? I know Greg went to the Timberwolves and Hollins is gone.

I think this is better news for Jamar Smith than it is for Kris Joseph. Jamar played point in the summer league and for the Maine Red Claws.

While I appreciated KD’s contribution to RR’s progress last season his quality of play was not very good and down right poor at times. This gives both KJ and Xmas a chance to stick (I prefer both as their upside is HUGE) and maybe even Smith if Darko or Collins prove valueless, too. Go Cs…
