ESPN Boston’s Celtics scribe Chris Forsberg shared this video of Leandro Barbosa’s first meeting with the Boston media today after a lengthy practice.
Mostly, it’s just interesting to see a new face and hear a new voice talking about playing for the Celtics this year. Barbosa certainly didn’t share anything earth-shattering. A few notes:
- Sports media scrums: the only place on Earth where you can ask someone “Are you in shape?” and not be incredibly rude.
- Barbosa is saying all the right things about playing time, which is good since there isn’t a lot of room for him. His addendum at the end, “As long as the team is successful, I will be happy” is somewhat interesting. He doesn’t want to disrupt anything, unless the team starts losing.
- In case you are interested (because I am), the Phoenix Suns team Barbosa is presumably referring to is the ’09-’10 team that lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. That team featured Barbosa, Steve Nash, Jason Richardson and Goran Dragic in the backcourt, plus Grant Hill, if you are feeling generous positionally. The Celtics will feature Rondo, Bradley, Lee, Terry, and Barbosa, and perhaps Paul Pierce, if Rivers’ Rondo-Pierce-Green-Bass-Garnett lineup ends up being a thing. The average PER of ’09-’10 Phoenix’s backcourt was 16.2. The average PER of Boston’s current backcourt in 2012 was 15.0. So yes, Barbosa has played on a team with lots of backcourt weapons. This totally pointless bit of statistical analysis was brought to you by my iced coffee energy boost and the convenient proximity of my calculator. You’re welcome.
Anyway, it’s good to see Barbosa getting some work in with the Celtics. Hopefully he is ready for tomorrow’s conditioning workout. Kevin Garnett says they are doozies.
