Video: Rajon Rondo is not a happy camper

Rajon Rondo isn’t an unnecessarily cheery guy. I’m not saying he doesn’t smile or that he never seems happy, but he doesn’t really ever come across as the kind of person who would help make the locker room a more vibrant place, certainly not after a loss like tonight’s. So when I say “Rondo seems even more depressed and subdued than usual,” please understand it’s not that he’s being a jerk, it’s just that he’s an incredibly competitive player and losing makes him subdued. Also, I’ve seen cheerier morgues than that particular media scrum.

Of course, Rondo has plenty of reason to feel that way. 0-2 is no death sentence, by any means, but it’s never easy to lose and it’s CERTAINLY never easy to lose at home to an inferior team. The Celtics are performing well below the assembled talent level of the team and as the director of an underperforming team, Rondo must feel not only frustration, but a certain amount of responsibility for the team’s struggles. That would be enough to make me uninterested in giving reporters any quotes that are worth using.

Anyway, with a hat tip to CelticsHub, here’s Rajon Rondo postgame:

Just three quick thoughts:

  • How frustrating would it be as a reporter to wait your turn in the media scrum, ask a perfectly fair (if generic) question and have Rondo just stare you down with a blank look before turning away? Answer: very frustrating and probably a little frightening.
  • Rondo isn’t exactly inspiring a lot of confidence in the team’s chemistry, particularly defensively. Do you guys trust each other? “I don’t know. I mean, we say we do [trust each other], but on the court it shows.” Yeeeeeeesh.
  • The easy way to explain away tonight’s loss would be to say that the Celtics just don’t care during the regular season, and maybe that’s true. But I have a hard time listening to this interview and thinking that winning is a question of desire for this team.
