Mike D’Antoni chosen as next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers

Mike D’Antoni, not Phil Jackson, will be the next coach of theLakers.
“We signed Mike D’Antoni to a multi-year deal,” Lakers spokesman John Black said, mentioning the team’s owner and top two executives. “Dr. [Jerry] Buss, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak were unanimous that Mike D’Antoni was the best coach for the team at this time.”
Probably a conversation among Lakers front office executives:
“Mike D’Antoni’s available!”
“But he completely flopped in New York and never really showed the ability to coach a title team. Also, if we accept a few demands, one of the two greatest coaches ever is available.”
“But D’Antoni can run Steve Nash pick-and-rolls!”
“Clifford the big red dog could run Steve Nash pick-and-rolls.”
“Agreed, then. We’ll sign D’Antoni to a multi-year deal.”
In all seriousness, it completely boggles my mind that teams continually choose coaches who have failed pretty miserably at their last stops when talented assistant coaches toil in obscurity. Case in point: Tom Thibodeau.
But if teams hire a big name, see, it’s the big name’s fault when things don’t work out. Whereas if teams hire an unproven assistant, it’s the general manager’s fault for choosing someone with no head coaching experience.
The world can be stupid. And so can the Los Angeles Lakers. Choosing Mike D’Antoni over Phil Jackson, wow.

Maybe the Lakers finally showed enough class to decide that handing Phil Jackson more goldplated feathernested cherrypicked championships so he could claim to be better than Red was just too low even for them.

Yeah, it’s nothing like that Big Three that Danny Ainge traded for in 2008 was any different, right?

WTF are the Lakers thinking? Mike Damn-phoney already proved himself to be a fraud at New York. Now he will be coaching an older team that is not as quick and athletic as it used to be. I do not see that ending well.
