Grind: Boston Celtics edge Utah Jazz 98-93

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" (Courtesy of @Jose3030)

Show of hands: Whose hearts are still racing after that game? Everybody? I’m not the only one? Cool. Just making sure.

Let’s skip the foreplay (Boston won 98-93 in a hard-fought game, blah blah) and get right into the bullet points:

  • Jeff Green! Green was fantastic. He got to the line more than anyone besides Paul Pierce and contributed 16 points off the bench on 5-9 shooting from the field. Green also showed some previously unseen aggression attacking smaller defenders. Want to re-watch the ideal Jeff Green scenario a bunch of times? Watch this play. He recognizes that he has the smaller Randy Foye on him, so he gets himself comfortable position in the post, makes a nice move to his left and drops in the baby hook. He grabbed just four rebounds in 27 minutes, but it should be noted that A) He grabbed a fifth rebound in the final minute, then got tripped by Al Jefferson and was called for traveling and B) It’s hard to blame Green for a problem that spread itself across the roster pretty evenly. Speaking of which…
  • Of course. The day I post an article about how offensive rebounds don’t really matter to Boston, the Celtics got absolutely rocked on both ends (go ahead, take your shots). While I still maintain that defense is more important to this team than second chance points, four offensive rebounds is WAY WAY too few, and it nearly doomed the Celtics in this game. That being said, part of the reason the Celtics struggled so badly was because they simply didn’t have the personnel to battle with an enormous, bruising, talented Jazz team. Utah ranks 6th and 8th in the league in defensive and offensive rebounding respectively, so they give lots of teams fits. They get boards. Boston doesn’t. Rebounding was always going to be a struggle against the Jazz. Fortunately, the C’s weathered the storm.
  • Pierce seemed to shoot himself out of his slump a bit, knocking down three huge 3-pointers in the second half. He didn’t finish with a particularly pretty field goal percentage (7-17 overall), but his 3-point percentage was good (3-7) and he got to the line seven times, making six of them. He also abused Randy Foye in the post at one point, reminding us why we love his post-game.
  • 10 3-point attempts is a curiously low number for the Celtics. I’m not really complaining because so much of the offense happened around the basket, leading to 50.0% shooting overall, and, of course, I’m not complaining because the Celtics won. But Pierce made three of Boston’s four 3-pointers and he was the only Celtic who looked comfortable launching from long range consistently.
  • Barbosa got 23 minutes and he’s making a pretty convincing case for his spot as a backup to Rondo. In both of the past two games, Barbosa has entered and jumpstarted the offense, driving to the basket to create easy layups and dishing to teammates. He was hyper-efficient tonight, scoring 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and dishing 3 assists without turning it over once. When the Celtics acquired him, I wrote that he wouldn’t be a good option at point guard because of his struggles in the pick and roll, but he’s been excellent in isolation, driving to the basket and dishing if he gets in trouble.
  • Jason Terry wins the “Inconsequential Player of the Night” award: 3 points, 0-1 from the field, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers. Not his best outing.
  • +/- isn’t my favorite stat in measuring individual players, but when used for units of players as a whole, it should give you a good idea of how well the bench played tonight. The starters, collectively, finished with a +/- of -14. The bench? +29. Of the starters, only Garnett finished in positive digits with +9. Barbosa, Green and Lee finished +13, +12 and +11 respectively.
  • We still aren’t seeing consistently excellent Celtics defense (watch the first quarter again for the gory evidence), but it IS there, waiting to be called upon when need be, apparently. In the final minute, Utah had five opportunities to tie or take the lead (two of which were provided by Boston’s shoddy rebounding, but still). The Celtics swarmed and stopped them every single time. I’m not sure how comforting it is knowing that the defense seems to have a switch that they flip in crunch time, but it is good to know that the defense is hiding down there somewhere. It would just be nice if they could reach down utilize it consistently. Oh well.

That should about do it for tonight. Enjoy the three game winning streak, being comfortably over .500 for the first time this season and, once more, this:

BECAUSE IT MAY NEVER GET OLD.

You really don’t understand the art of rebounding do you? It’s not about physical size only; it’s about smarts, heart, blocking your man out and …#1 – EFFORT. We win games by 5 pts that we should win easily by 10-15 pts. We give up 18 offensive rebs and that’s with us SUPPOSEDLY between the rim and our man we’re defending. apparently not. PP got 2 rebs in 29 mins. BB had only 3 rebs and at the end of Q2 the bench had more rebs than our starters; in 44 mins of total play to 76 for our starters. Even after Q3 the bench had more. We had -10 shots compared to Utah and that’s a direct result of their +15 in rebs overall and our giving up 18 offensive rebs. This is a major problem and this team will not beat the suck teams going forward, much-less the quality teams, unless we start rebounding better. it’s called boxing-out and it’s a major element of championship ball. Doc sucks, our frontline sucked tonight (13 rebs in 91 mins) and we were lucky to win. But hey, rebounding doesn’t matter apparently in C-Town. Go Cs…

Kevin Garnett is the best thing to have happened to Jeff Green. It’s awesome to watch their relationship on the court especially after that dunk. After KG said he needed to be an asshole JG has played more aggressive and I like to think this was his confidence game, not to mention that dunk again… my lord.

You deserve the shots, for your wizenacre article. I’m sick and tired of supposed ‘journalists’, or aspiring ‘journalists’, who appear to stooge for the team they cover. Yeah, I know, I know. Your hoped for future depends on their good graces. You have to be the mouthpiece for them, don’t you?

Rebounding is important. This team sucks at rebounding and has for years, only it’s gotten worse with time. That sucks. Part of it is a tradeoff, but part of it appears to be Doc not really caring about an important part of the game, perhaps because Doc really doesn’t like Bigs that much. He really does seem to have some kind of problem with bigs. It’s like his problem with rooks. Yeah, as his loving defenders point out, he WILL play an exceptionally talented rookie, and he will play an exceptionally talented Big, but you know, he doesn’t seem to like it much, does he?

You talk as though grabbing rebounds wasn’t actually PART of defensive play. Each team has to strike its own balance, and a lot of that depends on personnel, and with many of the core players being OLD (yes, KG, you are old hon), the Cs have to lean towards getting back. Doesn’t change the blazing fact that our balance is off, that we don’t rebound enough, especially on the offensive glass. Hell, we don’t even block out. Sometimes we remember for a play and do it halfheartedly.

Riddle me this, smarty: how are we going to push the tempo, as we promised to do this summer, IF WE DON’T REBOUND?

And have you taken a slight moment to consider the consequences of creating a situation where opposing teams never have to worry AT ALL about whether they will be able to clean the glass when we miss? It allows them to get out faster in transition, and to even create transition sets, if they want to,doesn’t it? That in turn negates a lot of the advantage getting back quick might have given us, especially when we become lazy about getting back, as we so often do.

In other words, don’t offer us some regurgitated pablum and then try to pass it off as a brave and daring new point of view that took some journalistic courage to present. Criminy.

Ouch, but dead-on point. Rebounding is a major element of hoops play. You think John Wooden never cared or focused on rebounding? How about Red? I’ve watched the Cs since I was 6 yrs old and now at 59 they are the worst rebounding team EVER in Cs history. Doc coaches as a guard, because that’s what he was. Ergo, he doesn’t know how to or care to coach the bigs. In 2008 we had Clifford Ray as our ‘bigs’ coach and as soon as the Cs let him go, and Thibodeau, we have steadily sunk lower and lower in a stat area that is the only criteria that allows a team to control the game. Control the boards and you’re going to win more than lose. Somebody needs to wake Doc the f’in up because if we keep this pathetic rebounding effort up we’re already finished for the season. Go Cs…
