Doc Rivers admits he told the Boston Celtics to help keep Rajon Rondo’s streak alive

During the waning moment’s of yesterday’s lopsided loss to the Detroit Pistons, Doc Rivers told his team it was obviously going to lose. And then he encouraged his players to help Rajon Rondo in keeping his double-digit assists streak alive. (CSNNE)
“Why not? You guys keep talking about it, so I figured give him a shot at it.”
“When I called a time-out,” Rivers recalled, “I said, ‘guys, we’re going to lose the game by the way.’ Let’s not play crazy, but if we can get him two more (assists), let’s do it. If not, that’s it. First time we’ve done that.”
I don’t think it’s a big deal. Rondo needed a few more assists and the Celtics left him in to get them. They weren’t sacrificing any chance at a win — down 20 in the last few minutes, they weren’t coming back anyway.
I saw a lot of griping last night about Rondo passing up shots because he wants to keep the streak alive. But I bet Rondo passes up shots in pickup games with nobody taking stats. If you’ve watched him throughout his entire career, you know he’s pass-first, pass-second, shoot-79th. It’s not like his mentality has changed as the streak continues. Plus, he’s taking more shots this year than he has since 2009-10. He’s scoring more points this year than he has in any except for 2009-10. The streak isn’t changing him, except maybe he chased it at the end of a 20-point blowout. And to that, I say:
So what?

It’s hard to bitch about Rondo’s play generally yesterday, and the streak in particular, when it’s just about the only thing one can feel good about. This team pretty much seemed to give up on the game long long long before it was officially over. Rondo was about the only one who showed up and I’m gonna be mad about him keeping his streak alive?

You would be really pissed if RR had injured himself, or re-injured his ankle and missed SA on Wednesday or longer. If we were winning then fine but this is selfish stat b.s. and it has no place on what is basically a .500 team that continues to try and coast to the playoffs, which are 6 months away. Go Cs…I hope the streak ends and the Cs start winning!

I think that Rondo’s streak matters, but a win comes more on my priority list for the celtics right now.
If it was a 1 point game, and rondo was open in the paint for a layup and he passed it to someone else just to get than 10th assist, then that is a problem.
We were losing by 20, and rondo is only behind LeBron in terms of likelihood to get injured. He’s a tough guy, and hopefully he beats Magic Johnson’s streak to show everyone that he is THE best point guard in NBA!

That’s loyalty for you: the celtics putting the need of a teammates ahead of their own. What’s the big deal? If anything, it shows how much camaraderie and cohesion there is in the locker room for teammates to help Rondo like that.

Thank you. Those malicious personal attacks to Rondo make me so mad. They are so jealous of Rondo’s greatness they can’t wait for him to fall so they can pounce on him.

Is that the ghost of Judas’ past I spot in the background of that Rondo pic?

Too bad the passion shown to keep this stupid streak alive isn’t given to rebounding which could lead to wins (5 losses with 4 lost rebounding stats effort in those games). Doc has his f’in priorities all wrong if RR is in the game with us down 20 pts and only 51 seconds left. F’in pathetic coach and coaching. Go Cs…learn to box-out and rebound better and the wins will come

If that short guy Brandon Bass had made a few wide open shots this would not be an issue. The rookie is going to get his minutes soon. By the way, Bass and Green have no instinct for basketball. Athleticism be damned.
