Slip sliding away: Boston falls 91-88

I’ll admit it. I really thought the Celtics were going to run away with this game.
It was foolish, I know. I mean, why would I think that this team could hold a 17-0 lead? Stupid, stupid. I should have known that Milwaukee would come back, because, you know, the Celtics. The only question would be whether or not Boston could hold off Milwaukee’s comeback. They could not, as it turned out.
Anyway. Here are a few bullet points.
- Paul Pierce had a bad game that will probably fly under the radar because he made a HUGE 3 to put the Celtics up late. But make no mistake: The Truth was lying his ass off tonight. He finished 6-16 from the field and 1-4 from 3-point range. Most of his attempts came off isolation plays that just aren’t extremely effective anymore. To be fair, he did, in vintage Pierce style, draw several fouls, earning eight trips to the free throw line.
- Jeff Green was really good once again tonight, shooting 8-11 for 18 points, as well as grabbing six rebounds. He looks infinitely more comfortable on offense, and he seems to be figuring out that he is most effective driving to the basket and second most effective camped out behind the 3-point arc on the baseline. It’s very strange to catch yourself thinking “Why aren’t the Celtics isolating for Jeff Green?” in the final two minutes of a close game, but the thought definitely crossed my mind.
- In the final box score, it may look like the Celtics weren’t killed by rebounding tonight, but don’t be fooled. Boston’s final tally, 43 to Milwaukee’s 42, was inflated by their first quarter success. The Celtics’ defense forced several misses in the fourth quarter only to give up easy baskets around the rim to Larry Sanders or Ersan Ilyasova.
- Actually, let’s make a pact not to say L*rry S*nders name for the rest of the recap after the damage he inflicted tonight.
- Jason Terry was sneaky bad tonight. His 15 points look pretty good until you realize that he took 17 shots to get there, including 2-9 shooting from 3-point range.
- I hate when fans blame officials for the loss of a game. It’s a really lazy way to write off a loss. That being said, Garnett got called for a foul late in the fourth, pushing, um, “Sarry Landers” in the back. Had Garnett not been called for the foul, he would have had an easy layup. Instead, Milwaukee got the ball. I’m not saying that that particular play resulted in the loss. Boston’s lackadaisical play, Sarry Landers and Milwaukee’s inspired effort after the first quarter, and incessant Pierce isos were the main culprits. But it certainly didn’t help.
That’s all for now, with plenty more to come later. Hope all of your Saturday nights improve from here.

Well, coming back after a week without my PC (as it died and then got rebuilt) to see the Cs go 3-2 when they should have been 5-0, even with the RR ejection vs BRK, is certainly disheartening. PP had 1 reb in the 2nd half tonight and that says it all. More tomorrow on the last several games, but I promise to be brief as this soft team desperately needs AB back so the defense and intensity can return. Love what RR did but he only deserved a one game suspension. Go Cs…mediocrity sucks, as you do still almost 1/4 into the season.

Bad Coaching by Rivers-Too Much playing time for Pierce-Not enough from Barbosa & Sullenger-It was back to back, what if he gets hurt. We would have still been there at the end but Pierce would be fresher

I’m beginning to think this team is hopeless. I mean, what Rondo did was, when you come right down to it, a desperate stunt intended to get this team going. Well it worked. For five quarters. I don’t mean that I hate the Celtics for losing last night. They aren’t a garbage team. They are an ok team. They may even be a late seed. Contenders? That’s a laugh at this point. Contenders to squeak into the playoffs, sure.
The thing is, how can you contend when as soon as you get a lead, you stop playing tough D and you start chucking Js, and other teams KNOW you will do this? How can you contend when you get punked inside, outside of the first five minutes of every game, when KG is fresh, and every opposing team knows that there is nothing you can or will do about it? how can you contend when your toughest player is your point guard?!!! When your point guard is your freaking enforcer?!!!!
How can you contend when two out of your three key new players need the ball as much as your superstar point guard or else they flat out suck? What the freaking hell are we supposed to do? Take the ball out of Rondo’s hands?
Either this team gets going, or we have to start the rebuilding process. We can’t wait much longer. I don’t expect them to be perfect, but I’m sick of this team acting all summer like they had a plan, and then as soon as the season starts, they act like they had no plan.
Fans know what we need. We need this team to play up-tempo ball, and high energy ball, to make up for the fact that we are not big and tough inside. We need a guard-oriented defense that harasses opposing offenses before they get into their sets. We need to attack the basket and not just chuck Js. We need Lee and Green to play ball with Rondo, and not require the ball all the time in order to be productive. Green in particular seems to demand superstar handling. Sorry, Jeff, but Rondo is the man around here, and right now, you aren’t much. Two good games from you just pisses us off, because it makes us more aware of what you HAVEN’T been giving us.
And Rondo has to step up from all star level play to MVP level play, or we can’t be contenders. Or else let’s begin rebuilding. Let’s look at trades, play the younger guys as much as possible, and all the rest of the stuff that goes with that.
For corn’s sake, to blow the opposing team out in the first quarter, and then start coasting in the second quarter – sure, it’s understandable, but it’s NOT championship level ball.
And we were told that this was about winning a championship.

Excellent comments! We suck and accepting that is not making Doc look any better. Go Cs…

And what really torques me off is when Doc says “it’s a make or miss league”. Yeah, well, on a certain basic level, that’s right. But really, that’s just an excuse for bad offense. Or put it this way: it’s a make or miss league for mediocre teams. Mediocre is fine. But it’s not championship contention.

if a ref doesnt call an offensive foul on KG and we go on to win by 5 or 7 or if Jennings misses a 3 and we go on to win by 4 or 5 all you guys would be up beat this morning. My point is that last nights loss was not that bad. No Rondo, a back to back, they will be fine. Last night the Celtics starting back court will be coming off the bench by January, be patient people…

You’re buying into Doc’s thoughts about the loss and that is a major problem for the team, our season, our fans…and should not be that way! Losing sucks and we’re a .500 team that thinks losing is OK. It’s not. EVER. Losing a game we were up by 17 in, and having PP get only 1 reb in the 2nd half, shows this team has MAJOR problems, as paul and others (like me) have eluded to all season. Yes, we need AB back desperately, but we just can’t afford to be so f’in soft and play STUPID basketball against teams we should easily beat by 10 pts or more. No Celtic fan should ever ‘accept’ a loss like this even with RR out. We have too much talent (supposedly), but underachieving is all they have shown being adept at so far this season. Reminds me of the bad stretches of 2010, and 2011. Go Cs…get it together Doc!!!

the main difference being the bad stretches of 2010 and 2011 started in the second half of the season, once we already locked down a decent playoff spot. this time we’re sucking right from the start
