Boston’s Reckoning: Los Angeles Clippers smash Boston Celtics 106-77

Too much of this.

Let’s get this out of the way at the outset: The Clippers are good. Really good. Horrifyingly, frustratingly, soul-crushingly good. The Celtics, at the moment, are ok. Not bad, not great, probably not even good, just very .500. So it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that the Clippers blew Boston out of Staples Center Thursday night.

But that didn’t make it any easier to watch. The Celtics were spiritually crushed by the end of the third quarter. Every time Boston surged a little, the Clippers picked them up like Bane picked up Batman, held the C’s over their heads, and snapped their backs. By the fourth quarter, those of us who were still inexplicably watching were in Bane’s hellish prison with broken vertebrae witnessing Bane’s bid to blow up Gotham moving forward like a gigantic, runaway metaphor. It was graphic, disturbing and extremely painful.

I don’t feel like preambling anymore (I feel like curling up and crying myself to sleep), so here are my bullet points.

  • I’m going to try to pack as many bullet points in as I can, since it always seems like the go-to depressed NBA blogger shtick to say “I’m going to put as much effort into this recap as the (insert underachieving team here) put forward tonight.” (Of note: I’ve done this multiple times.)
  • In the second quarter, the Celtics actually got the lead down to four, trailing 32-28 with 10:36 remaining. Literally one minute later, the Celtics trailed by 12 after baskets from Bledsoe, Odom, Crawford (twice). The furthest of these baskets came from eight feet away. Boston, already one of the worst defensive teams in transition, was in for a loooooooooong night.
  • One game removed from his vengeful destruction of the Brooklyn Nets, Rajon Rondo submitted one of his worst performances of the season. He looked uncomfortable and tentative after missing a couple of shots early, and finished with 10 points, six assists and five rebounds, and  was -24 while he was on the court. He also shot 4-12 from the field, although several of his shot attempts were close to the basket and bounced out.
  • Jared Sullinger gets some of the worst foul calls. I honestly can’t tell if I’m just so used to seeing rookie calls go against opponents because the C’s have been a veteran team for so long, but Sully got wrapped up by Blake Griffin several times and got whistled for a foul every single one. That being said, the Clippers didn’t need any extra calls to blow out the Celtics tonight, which is probably why the calls themselves were all the more infuriating.
  • Matt Barnes was 5-9 from 3-point range. First of all, COME ON. Second, it felt more like 25-25.
  • The Celtics lost by 29 to the Clips on a night when Chris Paul shot 3-11 from the field for eight points. Let that sink in for a while (To be fair, he also had 11 assists).
  • Blake Griffin has a post-up game now. This is neither as terrifying nor as unexpected as Kevin Durant’s newfound back-to-the-basket success, but it’s a development that Griffin desperately needed in order to avoid becoming a one-trick pony.
  • The TNT broadcast crew pointed out that the Clippers biggest win of the season so far was 35 over the Sacramento Kings, which means we are, by my calculations, six points better than Sacramento. So. Party in the USA.
  • The Jason Collins starting experiment: No points, 1 rebound (ugh), no other stats, got beat once (that I saw) on a post move by DeAndre Jordan. Not a good night for the Collins camp.
  • The team rebounding stats were, for once, not atrocious (the Clippers won the boards 44-40, 10-7 offensive). What WAS atrocious: 18 turnovers by the C’s as opposed to 8 by Los Angeles.
  • Do you feel like reading any more? No? I don’t blame you. That’ll do.

I’m sure there are parts of the carnage that I missed, so have at it in the comments.

what about turiaf dunking all over the place, and smiling with hollins (i think) for a rebound fight? you know u are f*cied if turiaf is having fun against your team’s starters. Also i dunno if you saw the part when celtic fans walked across danny ainge telling him what I think was something like ” you’ve got a lot of work to do mr ainge, and fast.

For me just keep rondo, bradley and KG and trade everyone else, mr pierce doesent seem to want to get consistent anymore.

One team showed up and played like they enjoy playing hoops and our time decided to take the night off from the beginning. I hope this pathetic and lame performance gets Doc to wake the f*** up as he needs to get angry with this bunch and not just chummy as he does. How about yanking PP when he only gets 1 reb in the first half? How about doing the same with JG when he does the same? PP and JG played 27 and 29 mins respectively and each got 2 rebs. Kris Joseph played 8 mins and got 3 rebs. What does it f’in take for Doc to understand that rebounding is key? Yes, we only lost the boards by 4 but through the 3rd qtr we were down 0 – 12 pts on second chance pts (that’s offensive rebs killing us again..both getting them and giving them up). RR & JT had 10 rebs and our frontline had 8 rebs…pathetic. But the worst thing again was our stupid strategy of dbl-teaming, especially off Matt Barnes. Did we scout the Clippers or does anyone ever watch other teams? MB lives at the 3-line and that is all his game is so what do we do? We dbl off MB and leave him totally alone and he f’in killed us. He was 5 of 9 in 3s and actually missed his last 3 but by then it was too late. Hey kids, we suck and obviously getting AB back is going to help but if we can’t get PP and JG to rebound better we will be toast. I just am amazed that on a nationally televised game with all the NBA watching, as there were no other games, we don’t show up, have 18 TOs with sloppy and just stupid pass attempts and play the most uninspired hoops. BB had 9 rebs so get JC out of there, as he is worthless. I could go on but what’s the point? It all starts with Doc and he sucks worse than the players’ effort last night. Go Cs…welcome to sub .500 Saturday!

well said James…every minute Jason Collins spends on the court, I think I lose a month off my life. I have never questioned Doc until this year, but damn he needs to wake the fuck up

PS- The Matt Barnes bullet made me lol

That Clippers team if things stay the way they are,are by far the best team in the Nba there 12 deep, atheltic, quick and just complete there good 8th in offense 3rd in defence. Now we all know we suck in rebounding, second chance points this is nothing new at all it is groundhog day,Danny has to get a big just like all the things we are talking about every single game point to a big to clean that bulls**t up.I guy how can come in score 12-16 points and grab 10-15 rebounds. When I heard Shaq on TNT say last night for the Celtics to win PP and KG have to play out of there mind for us to win well it almost 2013 and its not gonna happen.AB is going to clean up guards breaking down the Defence but cant change all of our issues in the paint where on any given night an average to below average player is killing us and the star bigs are roasting us example Lamar Odom is averaging 5.2 boards per game last night 13 look Doc and Danny we need a big and if the asking price is too high for Gortat or Cousins get a Hollins,Koufas somebody or we are going to be a 6th-8th seed and out in the first or second round GO CELTICCSSSSS

While I agree we should find a good center, Doc needs to get the team collective to focus on rebounding. If PP gets at least 7 rebs we win 80% of our games. JG needs to get at least that many and we need everyone pounding the glass. Good things happen when a team controls the boards. yes, we are lacking in bigs but rebounding is about desire and effort. We don’t have the desire (JS, KG, RR and BB do) and the effort is lacking because of our stupid getting back on defense mantra that Doc promotes. I would love to see us battle for rebs or at least move towards the basket and BLOCK out but this all falls on Doc and ergo we’re 29th and at the bottom again. Ergo, we’re going to continue to lose games by just giving up and settling for the status quo. F**k the status quo…it is not working. Go Cs…AB hurry up!

no James, that wouldn’t be enough. This year we’re slow on all defensive rotations. Let it be effort, let it be chemistry, this team just doesn’t work. For some reasons, they didn’t gel. And I don’t think AB will change it. It’s time for a change, and given the complex Celtics defensive rotations (no pun intended), the sooner, the better.

I didn’t mean it as an end-all. It’s a start and a major element of winning games. Obviously, we need to stop all the dbl-teaming, guard the 3-line and designated 3-shooters better, need to have PP not play matador defense, and show up withb enthusiasm when playing. AB will help greatly as he will force the others to play better because of his effort. We need help but I think Doc is too milquetoast for the job and will always be a hinderance to the Cs. Thibodeau is sorely missed. Go Cs…

I don’t like Collins particularly. But he is the closest thing we have to an actual center, and if you don’t get that, there’s nothing to say to you.
