Boston Celtics complete spectacular win in MSG, defeat New York Knicks 102-96
Wow. After Rondo’s suspension this afternoon expectations were low for tonight, but the Celtics came together and won what turned out to be a thrilling game. There wasn’t a single Celtic that didn’t contribute tonight, and the C’s emerged victorious in a game where toughness and composure proved to be the difference. Lets get to the bullet points:
- Paul Pierce found himself in foul trouble multiple times in tonight, but the Truth was in rare form down the stretch. He finished with 23 points (10-18 shooting) and six assists. Pierce was a willing passer in the final period, but it was his fade-away dagger over Tyson Chandler that sealed the game in the waning moments of the quarter (here’s Pierce blowing a kiss to the MSG crowd following that play). And he did all this in just 28 foul ridden minutes.
- This win wouldn’t have been possible without Jeff Green. With Pierce in foul trouble Green was forced into action early and often, and he responded with 16 points and six rebounds. Green simply did what he needed to do, attacking mismatches like Steve Novak and getting to the line. It wasn’t an amazing game but it certainly was encouraging.
- Avery Bradley played his signature antagonistic defense tonight and his shot finally started falling as he went 6-11 from the floor for 13 points. Bradley also added five assists, and the amount of headaches he caused the Knicks can’t be quantified in a box score. Whether he was guarding Carmelo Anthony or snatching rebounds away from Tyson Chandler, Bradley was fearless.
- Like Bradley, the box score can’t accurately express how incredible a game Jared Sullinger played tonight. Sullinger battled down low tonight, and his intensity in the paint was unmatched as he fought an absolute war against Chandler. He finished with 10 points and five rebounds while playing solid defense, including an amazing defensive play on Melo in isolation. I can’t accurately express my adoration for the grit and heart Sullinger played with tonight. He leads the Celtics in cumulative +/- following this game.
- Kevin Garnett finished with 19 points (6-11 shooting) and nine rebounds but his biggest contribution may have been the way he got in Caremlo Anthony’s head. Garnett and Anthony went at each other all night, at one point they received double technicals and had to be separated. Anthony hammered Garnett every time he attempted to post up, but Garnett kept his head while Anthony went 6-26. Anthony apparently had to be restrained after the game as he screamed outside the Celtics locker room. Garnett played 38 minutes tonight, so it’s probably safe to say that Rondo owes him one.
- Jason Terry‘s shot was still MIA (1-7 from the floor) but he found other ways to contribute, chipping in with four rebounds and five assists. Terry also played some solid defense down the stretch, after suffering lapses on that end earlier in the game.
The Celtics have now tied their longest win streak of the season with three straight wins against quality teams (with a combined 63-37 record). The C’s have been vastly improved on the defensive end since Bradleys return, as they continue to show the heart and hustle this team seemed to lack earlier in the season. Tonight this team played with an edge and emerged with what might be their best win yet, and they did it without Rajon Rondo. The Celtics will have a chance to extend their win streak against the Phoenix Suns this Wednesday.

Gorgeous game tonight, I never doubt that the celtics would win, I knew Melo was shooting awful and when he knocked that 3 pointer in the 4th to make the game 84 83 I got a little bit nervous, but then the truth answered

What a great win tonight first off the ball pressure by Bradley and Lee disrupted the Knicks all night Kidd was so frustrated as was JR smith. The Knicks average over 103 points per game we held them to 96 they shoot 45 percent has a team held them to 40.8 and in the second half the Knicks only made 4 3pt field goals we really cleaned that up.PP loves the garden he stepped up big time in crunch time,Jarred Sullinger was a beast on both ends of the floor especially taken those charges and lets give JG some credit for one night he took advantage of his matchup and I think Doc really showed the rest of the league how to attack that 4 guard and chandler lineup tonight. This win was also huge because looking at the schedule the next 7 games only 2 teams have winning records its a chance for C’s to move up in the standing. And last Carmelo I really use to like Carmelo and he has really lost alot of respect from first was the ”I want out of Denver bulls**t then was tonight going to look for KG please buddy there are cops all over the arena what are you really gonna do? risk your life over 1 game this is competition not the streets take your L suck it up I dont believe that style of play of taking 30 3 point shots is gonna win any championships I would be shocked if it ever did

I lot respect for Carmelo when he sucker punched an unsuspecting Nate Robinson and ran almost the distance of the court like a b-tch. Great win Celtics, maybe we won’t have to show Doc the door after all if this team continues to win games. That’s all the fans care about at the end of the day.

It looks like Jeff green just needs a free basket to realize he could actually score cause before he hit the first one he didn’t even wanna touch the ball. This guy needs to find some confidence.

it’s really amazing what Bradley brought to this team. Seeing Chandler feasting on our “big” men, though, reminded me that the Cs made up with effort what the sorely lack in size. And since Barbosa alone is more effective than Lee and Jet combined, I once more suggest to pack one of them with Bass and ship them out of town for the first Gortat that comes along

And here I was saying Bradley ain’t the second coming. He may not have been but since his comeback he’s been pretty damn close. The boy has been playing like a man possessed. I would think twice about dropping Barbosa or Terry.

I have to admit I was more than skeptical, but his effort has been really contagious. In the second half of the knicks game he started to shoot well, either.
trade Barbosa? no way (and his contract is worth close to nothing). guards-wise, I’d ship Jet first, Lee second. The only thing that makes me sad is Jet’s great tattoo, but at the end of the day he’s been horrible on offense. on the other hand, Lee’s contract is more palatable and he’s younger, making him a better candidate for a trade

I agree with you in everything, but now that Bradley is back lets give JET one last chance because he’s been playing off the bench for a lot of time. Hopefully he’ll get his game back in time.
