Rajon Rondo wants Rudy Gay to join Boston Celtics. Not likely.

If Rudy Gay became a Celtic, we might see more plays like this one.
If you are the kind of person who doesn’t enjoy Jeff Green’s athleticism but underwhelming basketball skills, his as-of-yet-unattained potential, you are NOT going to appreciate the player Rajon Rondo wants on the Celtics.
When Jay emailed the Celtics Town writers and asked if anyone wanted to write about the “Marc Spears/Rondo/Gay talk,” I threw up in my mouth a little bit thinking there were rumors of a blockbuster deal between Memphis and Boston. Fortunately, I was mistaken: Spears simply had written an article on Rudy Gay. In it, Rajon Rondo exhorted the talented small forward to join the Celtics…somehow.
Whether it’s close friend Rajon Rondo, Jarrett Jack, or other basketball colleagues, Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay has been leaning on his circle of NBA friends to get him through recent trade speculation.
While Rondo, according to Gay, is giving sound advice, the Boston Celtics guard can’t help being a little selfish.
“It’s hard to talk to [Rondo] because he is always saying, ‘We need you over here. We need you over here,’ ” Gay said. “So it’s not easy talking to him. But he’s being a friend, just telling me about keeping everything together and he makes you feel like you are still valuable.”
Rondo’s attempts to get Gay to come to Boston are a little bit ridiculous in their feasibility. Gay is owed over $37 million between 2013-2015, so to get him via trade without giving up Rondo (which would defeat the purpose, obviously), Boston would need to do something utterly ridiculous like this unless they can find another team willing to help with the deal. Either way, it doesn’t seem likely that Gay could be acquired without giving up Avery Bradley which would be a big mistake, if the Avery Bradley-less part of the season is any indicator. Of note: this deal would be slightly easier and still fairly implausible on January 15 when Bass and Green can be traded.
HOWEVER. That’s not the point of the article, at least from a Celtics perspective. The point is that Rondo is being a good friend and encouraging Gay through his professional turmoil. Rondo knows what it’s like to be on the trading block after Danny Ainge was fairly public in his attempts to deal for Chris Paul, so he can not only offer sympathy, but also empathy. It’s always nice to have a friend who can relate.
What does this have to do with the Celtics? Admittedly, not much. But Boston has always been a fairly tight-knit group, and it seems likely that Rondo would find ways to encourage his teammates the same way he encourages his friends around the league.

The unexpected revelation that Rondo plays one-on-one with Lee before each game show that Rondo is a guy who finds unexpected ways to lead. KG may bark at people. Rondo has supported, encouraged, mentored guys like Bradley, Sully and lee in a different way. He seems to do that with guys around the league he likes too.
But Rajon, you’ve got to work harder on the court the rest of the way this season. Push the ball more on offense, pressure more on defense. No more ball pounding. No more matador. Well, I don’t mean no no. I mean less no. Or more no.
Just lead more in the conventional way, Rondo! Kick some butt on the court!

I think AB’s return has lit a spark in the Cs and will especially help RR play better defense. As we’ve seen way too many times in the past, this team tends to coast and play way down to it’s competition. Always seems like with the turn of the year that they collectively wake up and start giving the effort that they should have from the very first game. It’s so very frustrating to watch and live through. Once KG, PP and JT are retired or are used off the bench solely (PP & JT) then I think you will see a different mindset, as the team will be younger and RR will be in the prime years of his career leading the Cs. At least that’s what I am hoping for. With AB, and better rebounding we should be able to push the ball more and that feeds into RR being his most effective. Go Cs…tougher team tonight!

The “sign Jeff Green” guy is back. In regards to this article, Rondo is being a friend to Gay but how do you think that makes Green and the players on his team feel? “Hey Rudy, your needed over here because Uncle Jeff Green is not playing to his potential,” sounds like what it is implying. Obviously Rondo didn’t expect this to go beyond the phone call but telling someone else you need them, implies that people on your team need to be replaced. Maybe it will motivate the team, who knows.
