Boston Celtics interested in signing Greg Oden?

In light of Chris Wilcox’s injury troubles and Jason Collins … being Jason Collins, Celtics fans have been clamoring for the C’s to acquire a backup center who can rebound and defend. It appears that Danny Ainge agrees; as the Celtics are reportedly keeping an eye on former number one draft pick Greg Oden:

Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in 2007 who hasn’t played in an NBA game since 2009 due to a litany of knee injuries, is aiming for a comeback. Part of Oden’s plan is to sign with a team in the next month and get into a training and conditioning program with an eye toward returning to the floor next season. The Celtics are among the teams monitoring Oden’s progress, and sources tell CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman that the Spurs and Cavaliers have expressed interest, too.

In addition to the teams mentioned in that report, the Heat and the Mavericks have both expressed interest. Oden previously stated that he was taking the entire 2012-2013 season off to get healthy, but depending on where he’s at in his rehab its possible Ainge might try to bring him in as a contributor this year. Either way, the biggest obstacle to the Celtics signing Oden would be money: even though he’s had three microfracture surgeries, someone is sure to offer Oden more money than the Celtics can. All the more reason for Ainge to try and get this done now, before teams have more cap room and summer workouts raise Oden’s price tag even further. Even if Oden can’t contribute this season, he could be an interesting option for the C’s going forward if the price is right.
.
Update: Ainge downplayed the Celtics’ interest in Oden this afternoon in an interview with WEEI, saying that they’re monitoring Oden “like all the NBA team are” but haven’t attempted to sign him.

Have to agree. His career is over, his knees are shot and this is a big waste of time. Besides, FAB is coming to start by the playoffs. Go Cs…
