Boston Celtics suffer epic double-overtime collapse against the Atlanta Hawks, lose 123-111
The Celtics were up by 27 points and I was (foolishly) preparing to write a recap about how even though the Celtics put together a solid game tonight there was no way fans could trust this team right now. Well the Celtics sure showed me! The Celtics took that sizeable lead and they threw it in the garbage, allowing Atlanta to go on a 19-0 run at the beginning of the third quarter. Kyle Korver made eight second-half threes (he only does one thing guys! Go over the screen!) and I cursed under my breath as the Celtics crumbled down the stretch. I’m utterly disgusted so lets just try and get through this:
- Paul Pierce was utterly indefensible tonight. He finished with 12 points on 13 shots, six rebounds, four assists, and five turnovers. I really can’t put into words how awful he was, but I’ll try. Late in the fourth, Pierce brutally front-rimmed an open three, and then on the following possession passed up on open possession and deferred the ball to Jeff Green. That was the moment when I knew Pierce was completely and utterly done. Unfortunately, Doc left Pierce in anyways (even though that meant he had to guard the much bigger, stronger, and younger Josh Smith) and then proceeded to end both the 4th quarter and the first overtime with Pierce isolations (both of which ended horribly because, surprise, Josh Smith can guard Pierce even when he’s not totally exhausted). This was completely and totally indefensible, especially given how well Green, Lee, and Terry played tonight. Lets talk about them instead, yes?
- Jeff Green was really solid overall, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds. Green did most of his damage in the first half, but I still would have rather had him in down the stretch over Pierce because at least he would have had a shot of defending Smith (or at least pestering him into taking bad jumpers, which we all know Smith loves to do).
- Jason Terry scored 12 points on an efficient six shots; he was 3-4 from downtown and looked to finally be getting out of his slump.
- Courtney Lee was absolutely incredible. He scored 16 points, and rounded out his stat line with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. It wasn’t just what Lee did, but when he did it. Lee’s single three of the night came when the Celtics desperately needed a bucket, and he was responsible for numerous late-game stops that kept the Celtics in the game. If the Celtics had won the game tonight, Lee would have deserved the game ball.
- Rajon Rondo joined Antoine Walker and Larry Bird as the only Celtics to record triple-doubles in back-to-back games, posting a 16/10/11 line.
- None of this matters because the Celtics still lost.
That’s really what it comes down to: The Celtics blew a 27 point lead and lost and are now in the midst of the longest losing streak in the KG era. Not only can you not trust this team, you can’t even dare to believe in this team for an instant. I’m disgusted, I’m flabbergasted, and I don’t know what to do. I’m not even sure there is anything TO do. Oh, and we have Miami at the Garden on Sunday. Awesome.

Another game given away that we should have won comfortably. It’s time to make PP the 6th Man. Start JG (yes, I am not a fan) and let PP come off the bench. I mean what the hell have we got to lose trying that??? Rest of Cs played pretty good. PP is dragging the Cs down. Go Cs…

What an absolute disaster. Heads are gonna roll sooner or later. Why does KG settle for jumpshots in the paint every time he gets the ball? His mid range jumpers are money however down low I notice he bricks a lot of em. I don’t know why he does not take a bounce, go up hard and dunk or take the contact. Forget JJ Redick, go after Dwight Howard if he’s available come trade time or another couple of solid bigs. Go Celtics, beat the Heat on Sunday and start the climb back to .500 and beyond.

I need Rondo to stop throwing alley oops. Not in crunch time and not to Garnett. We are not the Clippers and this is not Lobb City. We got complacent with that 26-27 lead. Here’s to hoping they bring their A-game to the garden on Sunday against the Heat because this losing streak cannot continue.

Oh my… remember that game we had against orlando last year? The bar fight? Well the hawks did the same against us tonight… I thinks the biggest problem with this team is that just like one year ago, none of them can create their own shot, I love PP but he’s done, press the panic button, this plane is going down and about to crash if they don’t do something. I really hope they beat the heat Sunday because I want ray allen to regret leaving boston… so sad right now

a complete collapse wow!!!!!! and dont got much to say pathetic just pathetic Brandon Bass another solid effort no field goals 2 rebounds so much for hoping he would improve after last year I know the floor spacing from last year is not there but go get it on boards 2 for our PF just not acceptable in my books.I cant watch this anymore.PP should not be having plays called for him in clutch situations this is not 2007-09 this is not the same PP even though he is and always will be he should be leading the team in scoring he should be 3rd option I run a play for KG instead of PP I just trust his judgement more.We need a big the whole world knows this someone who is solid on D and a shot blocker(sound familiar)without this void being filled were screwed.Yes the talent is there but like we have seen a million times in the NBA and all sports having all the talent does not amount to wins or even being a good team(ask kobe lol).On this team no person has a role because on any given night especially this season roles are changing one night Barbosa and Wilcox play some nights Collins plays some nights CL playing more than Terry visa versa, this falls on Doc roles, rotation gotta be solidified.Even if we could get back Steisma who gets no playing time with Minny to man the paint defensively with another servicable center we would be much better we have 5 guards and really truly no bigs LETS GO CELTICS

I wanted to keep my mouth shut but I can’t help it.
PP: stop it, now. either you’re done, ore you’re tired. In any case, you’re hurting us
Rondo: are you happy with your little, nice back to back triple double? good. now start playing for the team instead of for the stats. shoot when you have to shoot, pass when you have to pass, regardless of how many shoots/assist you need to get to 10. you can rebound as much as you want, but use 2 hands
Bass: -
Doc: just because PP can’t guard 2s or 3s anymore, that doesn’t mean you can ask him to defend on Josh Smith. not when Green is having one of his rare “ON” nights
Danny: blow this team up, now. KG doesn’t deserve any of this.

I agree, after each loss I feel really bad for KG, he’s the only one putting on an effort there. Besides JS and now courtney Lee, the rest of the guys seem to be just playing without any effort. KG does not deserve this…

Cancelled my NBA League Pass subscription after this one!
Pierce should become 6th man, deal or cut Terry whatever it takes to move him and Bass. I like Bass but Sully shoudl be strating alongside KG & Green. Lee & barbosa backing up Rondo & Bradley. Call up Melo who cannnot be any worse than Collins and will learn more playing with KG than he can with the Red Claws.
And all my suggestions require no acquisitions. If not done, fire Doc. Eveyr other team is playing young guys. Doc says Kyrie Irving showed up in Cleveland. As second year guy would Irving be playing & at this level on Doc’s Cs? Doubt it. He’d be watching Jason Terry from the end of the bench.

I would not cut Terry. He was effective in Dallas because it was a different system. If anything I would fire Doc. It is his ignorance toward other ideas that has led to this. Case in point, running a babysitters clinic for those on the bench instead of getting every player involved in the offense.
