Paul Pierce: ‘I want to retire as a Celtic’

Paul Pierce talked to the media today for the first time since that heart-rending post-game interview with Doris Burke on Sunday, and he had some revealing things to say about Boston’s mentality going forward from Rondo’s injury, and on his own desires to retire in a Celtics’ uniform.

From WEEI’s Ben Rohrbach:

Yes, I’m aware that Pierce wouldn’t flat out tell the media if he wanted to be traded. But I’m operating under the non-cynical assumption (which is unusual for me) that Pierce is being candid about his desire to stay with the team.

As a writer, someone who tries to keep as open and balanced an opinion as possible, I recognize that this will do nothing to stem the tidal wave of trade speculation crushing the internet right now. But as a fan? Assuming Paul Pierce is telling Danny Ainge the same thing, this means I would not support any deal that ships Pierce out of town.

Unfortunately, none of us have any ACTUAL say in the matter (unless Ainge himself is reading this, in which case what’s up man!), so my opinion means next to nothing. But if Pierce wants to stay put, I want the Celtics to keep him.

Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.

Then start playing better! And be a man and ask to be the Sixth Man. You’re the ‘captain’ so start acting like it. Go Cs…PPfor6th!

I didn’t read what you said before writing my own comment, which is therefore basically useless.

I’d be for it but based on a couple of 10-day contracts to see if he deserves a full contract for the balance of the season. I bet he can bring more than JT has/is. And you know he wants a ring real bad. Go Cs…

I’d love PP to retire as a Celtic, too, but in order to let it happen he should start acting like our captain. A captain seldom does what’s best for him, rather than what the team needs. So he should pass more when is shoot is not falling, or just to get his teammates more involved, start off the bench and play imited minutes when he’s too tired, work harder on the boards than he usually does, etc. He stuck with the Cs thru a lot of horrible times (I didn’t, for example), so I think he’s earned his spot in the Cs pantheon, but this doesn’t mean he can coast and play hero ball when the team is in desperate need for a leader

Not calling for a trade, but for him to start playing better. Camping at the top of the key and dribbling until he shoots a fade-away jumper isn’t working (see his shooting stats for the last 7 games) and I just hope he figures it out instead of compounding the issue by jacking shots that are ill-advised. Other aspects of his game are improving but he needs to stop the sloppy passes and defend better. No call for a trade just better play for his level of pay ($15MM). Ergo, why he isn’t an All-Star this year. Just saying. Go Cs…
