A deep breath: Boston Celtics blow out Sacramento Kings 99-81

A number of Celtics stepped up in Rondo's absence for a big home win.

If a person is lucky, he arrives at the end of a busy week with enough time for a single moment of silence. He or she can sit alone for 30 seconds, exhale and look forward. It’s not really a moment of relief, because life starts again in the morning. Rather, it’s a moment of reflection — an opportunity to take stock of one’s surroundings. It’s a nice moment, however temporary.

Boston earned themselves that moment by crushing the Sacramento Kings 99-81 in the first game since the world exploded around them. When Rondo went down with an injury, the internet understandably blew itself to smithereens trying to figure out what the Celtics would do next. The trade machine was abused. The merits of tanking vs. trying for one more stand were discussed. And now we find ourselves at a crossroads: Either the Celtics try to make a run in the playoffs or they look to the future.

Fortunately, that discussion was delayed after a big win against a bad team. We don’t know anything more than we did yesterday, except that the Celtics can still beat bad teams. Which, actually, is pretty significant given Boston’s losing streak before the Miami game. Regardless, let’s get to some bullet points.

  • Perhaps the best part of Boston’s win tonight was the even distribution of minutes between nearly every available player on the roster. Besides Jared Sullinger (more on him in a minute), only Jason Collins finished with single digit minutes. Better yet, just two Celtics played more than 30 (Bass with 38 and Pierce with 31), while Garnett finished with 28. Good to see more minutes for some players (ie. Barbosa and Wilcox) and less for the elder statesmen.
  • Jared Sullinger asked to be removed from the game after just four minutes with back spasms and never returned. This concerns me greatly (because of his rumored back problems pre-draft) and my fellow Celtics Town writer Jordan Higgs not at all (because Sullinger was likely to return if Boston hadn’t blown the game wide open). I leave it to you to pick your side.
  • Not sure this is totally necessary, ESPN Box Score. All of the sads.
  • The Celtics won the second quarter 37-14 and played about as well as we could have possibly hoped for from a post-Rondo team. Terry knocked down several jumpers, which created space for other players. Pierce got to his spot and hit his shots. Courtney Lee nailed a corner three. It was, all in all, nearly a picture perfect quarter. So naturally, the C’s had to make us feel less good about it…
  • The Kings made the usual end of the third/beginning of the fourth quarter run that Celtics’ opponents typically make when Boston has a big lead, which was aggravating. Boston’s offense went back into “let’s just get to the end of this thing” mode, which didn’t come back to bite them only because, frankly, the Kings just aren’t that good. The Celtics weathered the storm (really more of a light drizzle without an umbrella than a full-blown storm) and won comfortably, but not without leaving a “meh” feeling in fan’s stomachs.
  • There’s an important distinction between the Celtics BEING better without Rondo and the Celtics PLAYING better without Rondo. Boston is not better without their best player. But it’s possible that losing him will galvanize other players into overachieving. It’s possible that his absence will make other players realize the importance of their roles and play up to them instead of this general malaise we have witnessed throughout most of the season. It’s possible to play better without being better. I really hope the Celtics play better without Rondo, but I also hope we can all recognize that the team itself isn’t better. They would just be unlocking potential that has been there all along.

More tomorrow. For tonight, take a break from the trade machine and enjoy a brief respite. A two game winning streak feels nice. Relish it, because it all starts again tomorrow.

Sorry, but we need RR to win it all, but he has to move the ball more and outlet when he rebounds, as mentioned below. We got lucky vs the Heat as Chalmers, Haslem and Battier only had 4 pts total. That’s not happening again, especially in a playoff scenario. The Kings suck even though they crushed us by 22 a few weeks back. We’re a better rebounding team lately and LB is getting some minutes to show what he brings. All the analysts say the same thing re RR and needing him for a title run. We just need JT, JG and BB to play better and since it’s trade season maybe they’re finally waking up to the fact that they could be gone soon or after the season. Go Cs…

        nobody ever wants
to jump the gun and be overly optimistic and i understand that.but when i watch the celtics i get prophetic visions lol.they are rarely wrong.people can explain away what happened with “the last 2 games were flukes” but they havent looked that good since the preseason.rondo somehow got into some bad habits this season and i think it was all doc could do to get him out of them.i think rondo is uncoachable and doc was ok with that when they were winning but now he is sort
of relieved.it doesnt have to be disrespectful to rondo to assess the situation truthfully.i know in my heart that the fluid machine they have been for the last 2 games isnt because they are sparked by rondos absence.rondo wasnt himself this year whatsoever and people keep saying he faci
llitates the offense,if another pg in the league had the ball in his hands 20 seconds of every possession it would be a no brainer that they get all those assists.all his numbers did nothing to balance what his odd playstyle was taking away.i like rondo but i think he is at the least an eccentric genius and likely a little fucked in the head.hopefully when he see this season he can learn.

Speak on it man. Everybody got a diff opinion. For good or bad, nothing wrong with that. I notice a lot of your posts are done purely for shock value and at the least they are interesting. People nowadays are too highstrung on our little injured guard and they think, there is no other path to a title than Rondo. That type of thinking is pretty pessimistic.

We should have been playing this up temp style with Rondo,…I never understand why whoever got the rebound would only outlet to Rondo, that’s on Doc. It would have been nice to see rondo get a rebound and throw up court to the first open Celtic he seen. Very frustrating! However he will be missed in the playoffs , lets not forget through 5 games against Miami in last years eastern conference finals rondo was the best player on the court. For both teams!!!

I put a lot of blame on both Rondo and Doc for coming into this season with NO IDEA WHATEVER, as far as we could tell, about how to make the most of all the new talent. But I also blame the entire team other than KG for not really showing up for the season until Rondo’s exit. This was a total trainwreck, and it was far from being all Rondo’s fault. Now the team is on track. Good. Late is better than never. In my opinion, what happened this season was like junior high, where all the bullies and popular kids decided to get rid of the geek they didn’t like. The Cs got rid of their geek. Junior high never ends. But don’t expect me to applaud. KG is the only guy on this team who showed up all season long.

paul, nobody conjured to get rid of Rondo, he’s just out with a torn ACL.
and about the team finally being on track, it’s just a game, against low competition.

Too bad we didn’t play with this urgency and passion the last time we played the Kings. We should have been playing like this all year. But again, this was vs the Kings and let’s see how we play vs the next 5 sub .500 teams before saying we’ve turned any corner. we have a tough schedule in Feb. and I think we could only be 6-6 as several are games on the road and dbls with Den and the Lakers. If we play like last night then maybe we come out 9-3. Again, I think RR’s injury was a blessing in disguise and we’ll be better for it come next season…but I’d still bring FAB up and start him as JC is a waste of a player. Please play this way when RR is back…attack, attack, attack. And I concur with the RR comments running the offense. Pass and stop all the dribbling. Go Cs…

Rondo was racking up individual stats like crazy this year, problem is…his team was not winning. As good as he is, I felt in someways, something was holding this team back. Whether it be Doc and his babysitting clinic of benchwarmers or Rondo’s moody behavior and up and down play or the rebounding problem with was going unaddressed, something had to change. I just don’t think the new guys really had time to play their game and be creative because they always had to play Rondo’s game. Hopefully, they can keep up the good play. Beating Judas and the CHeat was a hell of a statement. On a side note, I hope JS is good to go in a couple of games or so. Suprized to see Wilcox back, so very strange. We lose one guy, we get one guy back and we lose one guy again.

Seems like that always happens the past few years, a guy comes back from injury but another guy goes down

That was a team inspired effort a team trying to prove the media and some fans wrong.I am telling you if no else gets injured we are still a tough out I would be happy making the second round.Miami and Chicago are the cream of the conference but if Danny for the right price can help KG by getting Mozgov we can make a run at conference finals.GO CELTICS
