A bad time: Portland Trailblazers beat Boston Celtics 92-86

All of them.
If you’ll pardon me for a somewhat shortened recap, I really need a shower. That game left its stink all over me, and I don’t want to spread it all to the couch I’m currently sitting on.
See, here’s the thing about basketball: If you shoot 2-14 from 3-point range as a team and you allow one single opponent to shoot 5-8 3-point range, you’re going to have a bad time. If you allow the opponent to outrebound you 47-36 and you allow JJ Hickson to drop an 11-11 double-double on you, you’re going to have a bad time. If every opposing starter scores double-figures and you give up three 3-point fouls, you’re going to have a bad time. And finally, if you try for a two when you are down six with under a minute to play…well, you are going to lose. And losing is a bad time.
Some bullets:
- Excepting two runs at the beginning of both halves, Boston never really seemed to get into a comfortable groove offensively, which had everything to do with the bench. Late in the fourth, I found myself wondering why Doc wasn’t playing certain members of the second unit in crunch time like he usually does before realizing that the second unit was 7-26 from the field and 0-5 from 3-point range.
- Related point: We now have two completely opposing returns on Boston’s latest acquisitions. On Friday, Terrence Williams and Jordan Crawford looked like the kind of pieces Boston desperately need: A rebounding point guard, and a player who can create his own shot off the bench. Tonight, they looked like players whose performances were exaggerated by a putrid Phoenix defense. Small sample sizes are frustrating for impatient people like myself.
- Defensive rotations are complicated, and Doc’s are notoriously so, so I tried very hard to control my cursing as Wes Matthews found himself open for three after three after three after three. Still. When a player is shooting 8-11 from the field, you would think defenses would begin to adjust to him at some point.
- When Matthews puts up a 3-pointer, you kind of assume it’s going in. Similarly, when Damian Lillard drives to the basket, jumps through eight sets of arms and puts the ball off the backboard with enough english to pass a literacy test, you kind of assume it’s going in. Bradley defended him well tonight (even stripping him at one point on a terrific defensive play), but Lillard is going to be one heck of a point guard.
- Pierce missed a few shots late and had a brain fart in the lane going for two instead of three, but let’s give him credit: Without his contributions, Boston would have gotten blown out tonight. He has been on a tear ever since Rondo went down, and, once again, his old-man game seems to be rounding into shape typically halfway through the season.
- Players who regressed to the mean tonight: Terrence Williams, Chris Wilcox, Jordan Crawford, Jeff Green (somewhat). Players who progressed to the mean: Brandon Bass, to a certain extent, who shot 5-10 from the field and hit several mid-range jumpers. He also played unbelievably bad defense, missing several crucial rotations and allowing his man to get to the basket. So despite the improved offensive performance, let’s make sure to temper any Bass enthusiasm. Does anyone have any Bass enthusiasm? No? Me neither. That’s probably appropriate.
The Celtics take on Utah tomorrow on the second night of a tough back-to-back. I’d make a joke about it being a bad time, but I feel like you probably saw it coming.

To all those who keep thinking we’re going somewhere in the playoffs this loss and tomorrow night’s should finally put a nail in the coffin for this season. No rebounding and not showing up with effort as usual and ergo another loss to a sub .500 team. PP had a measly 2 pts in Q4. We’ve underachieved all year and losing 3 key players for some reason had everyone giddy, but the reality is we cannot win a title without RR. PP needs to come off the bench and JG needs to start. Prep for next year and let’s find some f’in PASSION when we play. So uninspired all year. And Doc SUCKS. How about guarding the 3-line Doc? How about getting your team to play hard all the time and not consistently lose to sub .500 teams? More lame comments by Doc after the game; same old excuses just a different night. Utah, 21-6 at home, is so much tougher than Portland so 1-4 on the road-trip as predicted. Go Cs…

passion & effort can’t compensate SIZE. maybe in the regular season, but in the playoff all teams are bringing in their “A” game, so the Cs have no chance whatsoever.
and Doc SUCKS because he’s not playing the only big man we have. I almost hope KG goes down with an injury for a couple of weeks, so Doc will be forced to play Melo (like Bradley last year). but in italian we say “I know my chicken”, so Doc would eventually show up with Lee at the 3, PP at the 4 and Bass at center

They just signed DJ White… so bye bye Melo. Yeah I think this team is done, if they manage to get to the second round of the playoffs that’s as far as they will go. Rondo Sullinger please get back soon!

Well I am sorry guys but Melo isn’t ready yet… Great philosophy Doc, NOT. It’s this kind of thinking that’s holding this team back. It’s Doc’s job to turn these guys into a efficient productive unit. That’s goes for the filler players as well. Don’t panic tho, it’s 6 points not a shlacking. We were right there until the final moments.

a 6 points loss to a team that had lost 7 in a row and that the Cs beat 13 times in the last 14 meetings.
I acknowledge Melo is not ready, but he never will be until he starts playing significant minutes. Bradley wasn’t ready, either, until that guy went down and AB exploded.

You have 3 old veterans…you don’t toss the season and start playing the scrubs. DA should have blown up the team to satisfy the posters who are curious if fab can play in the NBA.

Yes, you re-tool because everyone is saying the Cs are not good enough to win the title and as I have been saying since RR went down, much-less JS’s injury on top of that. So yes, you play the players that need experience otherwise what’s the point of having fab here in Boston? He should be in Maine if he’s not going to be used. But that’s a waste, as this team is DOA and only should be focused on gelling the players to see if the newbies can mesh with the vets and each other. And FAB can play in the NBA as again, he is only in his 5th year of playing ‘serious’ hoops. Read and learn –
http://nesn.com/2012/06/fab-melo-has-made-great-strides-in-his-basketball-development-can-improve-even-more/
So in order to accelerate his development he needs to play and since the season is over as far as a title run then why not start working to be better next season? Go Cs…

This is not Little League…only the best players play…fab belongs in D-league…that is what it is for…the NBA is not the d-league.

He was drafted 22nd and so, as I said, either send him to play in the DL or USE him. How does he get experience otherwise? “Best players”, like Collins??? Come on len, get back in reality, the season is OVER. and if we make the playoffs and go out in Rnd 1, how does that help us? Go Cs…

fans don’t pay huge dollars to go to a game to watch practice or training….they are paying to see a professional team that is trying to win every game…

You don’t think FAB wants to win or will play hard? The season is over len. Plenty of teams experiment, except ours…ever; unless forced to (AB as an example). The fans I suspect, me included, would rather see effort, hustle and overachieving instead of the lame play that has us 29-27 and likely one game closer to .500 after tonight. Go Cs…

Did you pay to see Jason Collins? Hollings? Either O’ Neal?
Melo has upside and he will only learn by playing. I’d rather pay to watch Fab.
BTW, anyone remember a more cringe inducing rookie than Danny Ainge? Yet he played and developed.

Scal worked hard and wanted to win…is probably still a better player than fab at this point and no that quality of play is not worth paying for. I can see that at a D-league game for a lot less money.

Then how and when do players like FAB gain experience with the starters and other players so we don’t waste another year of him sitting on the bench. Under your thinking no rookie would ever be ready that was considered to ‘need work’. Bradley needed the same work yet he sat until an injury forced Doc’s hand. Why wait? So we can go out in the first round? That sure doesn’t make any sense to me. Scal, who I loved but couldn’t play, also wasn’t 7 feet, which is what everyone on all the Celtic blogs is bitching about what we need. we have one so I say PLAY HIM or D-League him. Sitting on the bench is a waste of his development. Go Cs…

at this point fab is an end of bench, dnp, player. He has not earned minutes like Sullinger did by demonstrating in the preseason and practices that he was ready. I would agree that he should play and right now that means the d-league.

So we disagree again on his potential value, et al. I’d rather he play with the core team as that’s where he’ll get the most experience and be more of a value come next season. Maybe a few more losses will help Doc realize he needs to play. GO Cs…

Dont get to upset coz C’s just wanna stay at the 7th spot or maybe 6th of the standing coz in it they just have to face heat at the ecf.atleast with that they have a chance advncing to the next round against the pacers or knicks.that just what i see.i think its the gameplan of the Cs.

Why haven’t we heard anything about DJ White signing with the Celtics? I think it’s a great addition to the team to say the least.

I think the problem right now with this team is they’re not confident enough. They play like the number 1 team in the NBA in home… but on the road they suck! horrible! If they can’t turn that around, coming playoff time they are not gonna pass the first round without home court advantage. They need to start playing good on the road or we’re finished.
