Without Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics come up short against the Miami Heat, 105-103

The Celtics delivered a thriller in the absence of Kevin Garnett, sidelined by the flu and an adductor strain. The C’s ultimately came up short in a game that was both exhilerating and (especially down the stretch) incredibly frustrating. It was a tense, exciting game that came down to the wire and though Boston wasn’t able to execute in the closing moments, Celtic pride was on full display tonight. Let’s get to the beloved bullet-points:

  • Jeff Green had an incredibly efficient career high 43 points on 21 shots–tieing Paul Pierce for the highest scoring game of the KG era–as well as seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks. “Whatever he ate for breakfast this morning or whatever he did today, he better keep doing it,” Pierce said after the game. Green’s monster night was spoiled by LeBron James go-ahead jumper with 10 seconds to go, but that shouldn’t take away from the amazing game Jeff Green had. Green was 5-7 from downtown and completed numerous three point plays off seemingly impossible shots. The crowd chanted his name. He even went left. Tonight’s game spoke volumes about how far Jeff Green has come since the beginning of the season. Green looked even better than in preseason, and he did it against some stiff competition. When asked about his game Jeff Green was slightly less excited than me. “It doesn’t matter. We lost. It sucks.”
  • Paul Pierce finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, but his night was marred by a costly seven turnovers.
  • Avery Bradley struggled offensively tonight, but had an awesome fingertip block on Norris Cole and hit a huge 3 to put the Celtics up 103-101 late (those two plays were so incredible I didn’t realize how much he struggled until after the game). Unfortunately he also had four turnovers.
  • Jason Terry was 4-6 tonight for 9 points, but he disappeared from the offense for long stretches of time, unfortunate on a night when he appeared to be shooting well. He also had four assists and, you guessed it, four turnovers.
  • Did I mention turnovers? The Celtics turned the ball over twenty times tonight and struggled under pressure without a true ball-handler. “We just don’t have the ball-handling to play half court anymore,” Doc said. While the C’s limited the Heat to just 6 fast break points, thats a lot of possessions to give up to your opponent and it ultimately cost the Celtics.
  • Courtney Lee was the unsung hero of this game, scoring 13 points on 6-10 shooting while playing some great defense and showing excellent decision making skills on the offensive end. He was taken out of the game in the final minute for Brandon Bass, immediately followed by Bass botching a driving layup.

In case you didn’t know, the Miami Heat are really good on this basketball team. Opinions will vary on what this game means, but come playoff time it probably doesn’t mean anything. On one hand, the Celtics were without Garnett tonight (and Rondo and Sullinger) and his presence would have certainly helped on a night where Miami scored 50 points in the paint. On the other, Jeff Green is not going to score 40 points every night and the Heat were playing their fifth game in seven nights. Regular season matchups are a poor barometer for what’s going to happen come playoff time, and the Heat are in a class of their own in the East. That said, the Celtics are still dangerous and the Heat don’t want to play them, and while my playoff aspirations aren’t high Celtics-Heat would be a hell of a series.

You forgot to mention the sixth man of miami, which of course were the officials, im not saying that miami won the game because of that, but every time the ceñtics were up (first by 13 and late on the 4th quarter by 10 ) the officials started calling small things like offensive fouls, travels, personal fouls, that normally against any other team they would not call. this gave miami opportunities to bounce back twice, but I agree, Boston turnes the ball over too many times besides the officials turnovers.

Also watch the game closely and when boston was up, they stopped calling fouls under the rim, see crawrord, green and pierce

LBJ hailed a cab on his first drive to the basket.

When are we going to learn not to leave Chalmers alone at the 3-line (last yr’s Gm 7, too)??? Great 1st half and then tossed the game away with TOs, PP & JC 4-10 on FTs, and JG only getting 1 reb in the 2nd half (6 in first). Heat +13 shots and Cs only 4 offensive rebs, isn’t going to win us games vs the Heat. Played tough, should have won, with full team we’d be really competitive. Go Cs…

Tremendous game guys, nothing to be ashamed by. What we need is a Celtic team to give it their all, even if they lose and you guys did just that. This team is every bit as good as Miami and let this one burn for a bit and avenge the loss come playoff time. Much respect Celticstown…

The turnovers didn’t beat ‘em. The foul shooting didn’t beat ‘em. The missed assignments didn’t beat ‘em The lack of force of Bass and Bradley at the rim, laying the ball up instead of throwing it down, in crunch time beat ‘em. Deference, hesitation, lack of force, God it’s frustrating getting so close. I guess Pierce put the loss on his shoulders at the end with the rushed three? They’re getting so close.

No KG and they nearly beat the HEat during the Heat’s hottest stretch. With KG you have Pierce or Green on LBJ the entire game. The 6 or so open under the basket Heat buckets are limited to maybe 2 with KG.

It would be tough to keep up that intensity to take 4 games from the Heat. Stranger things have happened though. Man I wish Sully had not gone down, need him more than Rondo. Got to keep the rest of the Cs healthy.

I’ll tell you how we’d be really competitive .. Trade Rondo for a BIG…I mean a real big to stand in the paint and DARE Lebron to come on in. Put a player like that onto the current squad ( with Sullinger) and we would be feared throughout the land !

This team isn’t winning a title without RR. Playoff ball is half-court and teams capable of winning a title need a steady ball-handler. DA will get us a big and our RR/AB backcourt will be the most feared in the NBA. Go Cs…

disheartening loss. It took me some time to deal with it: I was starting to design a “streakbuster” t-shirt. some key turnovers and some inexcusable lapses on defense down the strech cost us the game, not to mention the errors at the line. the lesson is Green is a great player, but not a go-to-guy, yet. it stings, a lot, but considering we were missing 3 starters, it ain’t bad.
the bad part is 2 of those starters are not coming back this season…

I think Green has evolved into a go to guy. That’s why, IMO, Pierce had that good look at game’s end.

If that game does not result in Green taking his game to the next level nothing ever will. I think he can be a Bernard King/George Gervin type scorer and his D on LBJ is pretty darn good too.

        I hope you are right.
about the future, I mean. last night I saw Green being TOO confident at the end of the game, losing LBJ for an easy hoop on one rotation, failing to convert a play he’s been doing all game long, and swallowing a deep-in-your-face-game winner. Not much you can do about the last one, but he let me down (a bit) in the other two.
anyway, if he’s going to play half as well any game, his contract is the biggest steal ever. still, not a go-to-guy (yet?)
