Boston Celtics sign DJ White to multi-year contract, Shavlik Randolph likely next
Terms of the deal were not announced, according to team policy, so we don’t know exactly what White signed for, but I think we can all agree that when you have the opportunity to sign a 26-year old averaging 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per game to a multi-year deal, you pull the trigger every time.
In all seriousness, White could be a player who contributes, especially if the Celtics keep Kevin Garnett out of the lineup for an extended period. Until last year, White had never averaged fewer than eight rebounds per 36 minutes, and he has a decent mid-range jumper that the Celtics can use in pick-and-pop situations. White is unlikely to see minutes in the playoffs (as demonstrated by his DNP-CD against Miami), but as a regular season stopgap, this is probably a good signing.
Shavlik Randolph’s future with the team isn’t certain yet, but Doc Rivers wants to keep him around for the sake of continuity, according to the Boston Globe:
Also, coach Doc Rivers said that he wants to keep team continuity and wants to sign Shavlik Randolph, whose second 10-day contract expires Thursday.
Said Rivers about the roster: “We don’t need to make any more changes. They know what we’re doing. We don’t need to bring in another. We brought in three guys (in the last month). That’s a lot for a team that’s in the thick of a playoff run. That’s enough change as far as I’m concerned. I think we’re done with the change stuff.”
According to the Celtics’ Twitter feed, both Kevin Garnett and Shavlik Randolph were on the team flight to New Orleans, so perhaps there is good news on every front.

I really don’t understand this move: I’d rather keep a couple of free roster spots to sign players cut by other team rather than signing two DNPs for multi year contracts.
what am I missing?

We cut Kris Joseph for $250K and then give this stiff, who isn’t going to play, a LT deal? WTF????? Bad move to lock in a spot when a guy like Pietrus wants to come back, as he loved being a Celtic and he can actually play (US ball not China ball). Dumb move. Go Cs…

Only for balance of season so that at least is a good thing. And only an ‘option’ for next year. He’ll be cut unless he turns into a better Chris Wilcox, which I doubt. Go Cs…stop scaring me…

Kris Joseph – Yes!
Pietrus? – Please -NO. Liked him at first (great personality, too) but Very disappointing @nd half of last season.
Bench seems So much better this year with overall cohesion

Do you remember that MP was injured and did not reveal such until the playoffs were over and then had minor surgery? That’s why his play diminished. He wants to be a Celtic so let’s get him, I say. Go Cs…

Can Celtics ever address need for strong Rebounder (besides the injured Sullinger) ?
