I mean, you HAD to see this coming, right?
According to several sources, including Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, talks have revived between the Celtics and Clippers which is an enormous surprise to absolutely no one.
Here is perhaps the most relevant part of the deal: The Clippers reached out to the Celtics this time. This is significant, and it points to the most important bit: Chris Paul reportedly nudged the Clippers in Rivers’ direction. Keeping Chris Paul is at the top of Los Angeles’ summer priorities, as it should be, so his (economically feasible) wish is kind of their command.
This is a little bit ironic, since Paul’s demands actually give the Celtics their first significant leverage since negotiations began. The original proposed deal, Garnet and Doc for Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan and two draft picks, is probably out of the question. But if Ainge is smart (and he is), he won’t just settle for Jordan and a couple of mediocre draft picks. He should absolutely start pushing for the Clippers to take back a bad contract along with the deal (preferably Jason Terry, who has very little trade value, unlike Courtney Lee).
It’s dangerous to analyze too much at this point, given how fluid negotiations have been and how very very very very very annoying and depressing this whole process has been, but it’s safe to say that talks have resumed, and we are about to go through this entire godforsaken circus. Again.
