Boston Celtics sign Terrence Williams through the remainder of the season and beyond

The Celtics have signed point-god Terrence Williams through the remainder of the season and beyond according to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Celtics will sign Terrence Williams for rest of season and conditionally for 2013-'14, league source tells Y! Sports.

Williams actually was held out of the Celtics last game against the Jazz, but the organization obviously saw something they liked in Williams (probably during his amazing first half against Phoenix) and decided to keep him around. The deal will conditionally keep Terrence Williams with the Celtics through the 2013-2014 season, with incentives for next season according to the Globe’s Gary Washburn. The former Louisville guard has averaged 4.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 15 minutes per game since signing a 10-day contract with the Celtics. You can read more about him here and here.

DeMarre Carroll talks about friendly rivalry with Paul Pierce, it’s ‘a summer thing’

After Monday’s overtime win against the Utah Jazz, Paul Pierce said that his late game duel with DeMarre Carroll dated back to this summer but left it up to the Jazz forward to fill in the details. Carroll explained further to the Salt Lake Tribune’s Steve Luhm at the Jazz’s Tuesday morning practice:

“It’s just a summer thing,” Carroll said, explaining he often works out with Kevin Garnett and Pierce in Los Angeles during the offseason.

“I’ve been killing him in the summer, and he said I was fouling. Once we get in a real game, he said, ‘I’m going to be able to get what I want.’ ”

“He had the refs on his side so, what he said before, it came to life,” said Carroll, who noted his rivalry with Pierce and Garnett is not fueled by animosity.

“They really love me and really speak highly of me. They think of me like their little brother. But when we step on the court, I ain’t friends.”

I don’t really know much about Carroll, but working out with two future hall-of-famers is a pretty smart move and if KG and Pierce think highly of him that’s good enough for me. Maybe he could teach his teammate Alec Burks a thing or two?

Boston Celtics still in the running for Greg Oden’s services, next season

Agent Mike Conley says Greg Oden will not decide on his next team until July. Cavs, Heat and Celtics in running.

According to Shaun Powell, the Celtics are among three teams still in the running for Greg Oden’s services. The Cavs should still have the inside track here, because of the three teams mentioned the Cavs are the only team of the three mentioned that can offer Oden more than the veteran minimum. It’s possible the Celtics (or the Heat) could make some cap clearing moves (trading Terry or Bass for example) to get under the tax line and free up some cash for Oden, but the more complicated a move like this becomes the tougher it is to pull off, and thats without factoring in Oden’s Ohio ties. I wouldn’t hold my breath but it’s something worth keeping an eye on.

D.J. White to sign with the Boston Celtics after finally receiving his letter of clearance from China

D.J. White has been with the Celtics for three days now, and the organization will finally be signing the 5th year big-man to a 10-day contract after receiving his letter of clearance from China (which apparently has very slow fax machines):

After forward D.J. White's letter of clearance finally arrived from China, he'll sign with Celtics in next 24 hours, sources tell Y! Sports.

We talked a little bit more about him here, but in summation White is a solid offensive big-man with a good mid-range shot. With only one game in the next five days White will have plenty of time to start learning the Celtics’ system and his presence should be an immediate boon for the C’s depleted front-court.

The Jeff Green-Brandon Bass lineup is really, really bad

In case the eye-test alone wasn’t enough to convince you that Jeff Green and Brandon Bass should never share a basketball court, Zach Lowe said this about the Green-Bass lineup at the end of his Grantland column yesterday:

This just hasn’t worked well, regardless of whether Boston pairs these two in big lineups or small ones. Boston’s opponents have outscored the Celtics by nearly 15 points per 100 possessions in the 500 minutes these two had shared entering Monday’s game. Boston’s overall scoring margin was exactly even going into that game, and no other two-man combination that had logged at least 200 minutes had a worse differential than -6.1 points per 100 possessions, according to NBA.com.

Here’s the lineup data Lowe is referring to on NBA.com. I’ll leave you to parse through most of it yourself but here’s how bad that lineup is: With both Bass and Green on the floor the Celtics have a worse offensive rating than the league-worst Washington Wizards (by 3.3 points!) and are 28th in the league in defensive rating, ahead of only the Charlotte Bobcats and the Sacramento Kings. Not a good look.

Jeff Green leads Boston Celtics’ rout of the Phoenix Suns 113-88

Danny kept the gang together and the Celtics responded, snapping a two-game losing streak rolling over the Suns to get their first win of this five game West Coast road-trip. Even without Kevin Garnett held out for rest, the Celtics throttled the hapless Suns and pulled away in the second half on route to a 113-88 victory. Despite having only one legitimate big-man in uniform, the Celtics won the rebounding battle (45-40) and held the Suns to 42% shooting, while the C’s shot a blistering 56%. It was a fun, feel-good win so let’s get to the bullet points:

  • Jeff Green scored a season high 31 to go with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and five blocks in his first start of the season. Green was an incredibly efficient 11-14, caused havoc on both ends of the floor, and tortured Louis Scola. He was aggressive, confident, and played so well that he got his name in the title of the post.
  • Terrence Williams is the closest thing the Celtics have had to a point guard since Rondo went down and by the end of the first half I was ready to buy his Jersey. Williams was able to calmly orchestrate the Celtics offense despite only being with the team for three days, showing good decision-making and excellent passing skills. Terrence Williams finished with nine points, four rebounds, and four assists while playing 23 minutes (the most of any Celtic off the bench).
  • Jordan Crawford came out firing, scoring 10 points on 4-9 shooting in 12 minutes. Crawford got off to a rough start before getting in the lane and finding his rhythm. He also didn’t take bad shots, though he was certainly willing to shoot it (only two Celtics took more shots than Crawford). Crawford was also more of a willing passer than advertised and had 2 assists in his limited minutes.
  • Chris Wilcox wanted to come into the game and make an immediate impact. He did just that, scoring 14 points on 7-9 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. The Celtics only legitimate big-man hustled all over the court, catching lobs, snatching offensive rebounds, and even blocking a shot.
  • Fab Melo was not allowed into the game until garbage time even though the Celtics were desperate for big-men. Read into this as much or as little as you like.

The Celtics will have a day off before facing Portland on Sunday, the first game of a back-to-back on the road as Kevin Garnett returns to the starting lineup.
