Boston Celtics sign Von Wafer to 1-year deal

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum, according to Alex Kennedy of Hoops World.  (Hoops World)

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation. The deal will be fully guaranteed and worth the veteran’s minimum.

The Celtics had spent the past week looking for a guard to replace Tony Allen. Jarvis Hayes and Roger Mason were mentioned as options, but the team ultimately went with Wafer because of his ability to score off of the bench.

Welcome to Boston, Von Wafer

Von Wafer is a 6’5″ shooting guard who played his college basketball at Florida State. He has played four NBA seasons, his best coming in 2008 with the Houston Rockets. He averaged 9.7 ppg in 19 mpg, while shooting 39% from behind the arc. Last season, Wafer played with the Greek team Olympiacos, where he struggled to receive consistent playing time before being waived in December.

Wafer’s signing could be a sign that Rudy Fernandez  trade talks have hit a rough patch, or come to a complete halt. While not as high profile a pick up as Fernandez would be, Wafer will fill a similar role off the bench– providing three-point shooting and a scoring punch. For the veteran’s minimum this is a no-risk, high-reward signing.

Celtics in lead position for Rudy Fernandez

Not only are the Celtics one of a handful of teams in the running for Rudy Fernandez. They are also in the lead position to acquire the 6’6″ beanpole from Spain. (CelticsBlog)

The Boston Celtics are currently in the ‘lead position’ in negotiations with the Portland Trailblazers for Rudy Fernandez, according to a source. They have been in serious discussions since yesterday.

Other teams interested including New York and Chicago, but the Celtics are apparently getting the first shot, thus allowing one to assume they are a preferred destination, either in terms of desirability for Rudy or trading pieces for the Blazers.

Get on it, Danny. Either get Rudy and Przybilla for Sheed and Lafayette or get Rudy for Lafayette and a pick or two.

If the Celtics do end up getting Rudy Fernandez, they will have one of the deeper benches in the league when Kendrick Perkins returns. Think about that second unit. Nate Robinson, Fernandez, Marquis Daniels, Glen Davis, and Jermaine O’Neal. That could be the best second unit in ball. I’m giddy just thinking about it. Work your magic one more time, Danny.

Could Celtics reunite with Delonte West?

Delonte West had some of his best days in Boston. In 2006, he averaged career highs in rebounds (4.1) and assists (4.6), and in 2007 he averaged a career  high 12.2 ppg. Plus, as a Celtic, he was never arrested for carrying multipe loaded firearms. According to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, that could be enough of a reason for the Celtics to consider a reunion. (Boston Globe)

The Celtics have been seeking a tough-minded defender to replace Tony Allen, now that he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. And according to a source, their interest could spread to former Celtic Delonte West, who is expected to be waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves after the club acquired him in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday.

Delonte, is that you?

How thin is the free agent crop that Danny Ainge is considering Delonte West? Granted, we only have the veteran minimum to utilize, but you’d think Ainge could find a reliable back up shooting guard who didn’t have such serious red flags. I used to be West’s biggest fan, but when you ride your motorcycle while carrying three loaded shotguns– one strapped to your leg and another in a guitar case– you’re not playing around. You plan on killing somebody.

Let’s take a look at the available free agent shooting guards to see if we can’t find a better option:

Gerald Green, Trenton Hassell, Fred Jones, Kareem Rush, Wally Szcerbiak, Von Wafer, Mario West, James White, Roger Mason Jr..

Admittedly, not an an All-star group of players, however, Kareem Rush, Von Wafer, and Roger Mason Jr. are all talented shooters who would fill a role off the bench. It seems Mason is looking for more than the veteran’s minimum, but Rush or Wafer could probably be had at that price. Hell, I’d take a lot of those guys as long as I didn’t have to worry about Delonte West sleeping with Ray Allen’s mom or going on a killing spree.
